Some place training with Roxy, 11 week old vizsla.
Place training is essential as it gives the dog something constructive to do, which means they can't do a lot of other behaviours. It's ine of the first things I encourage people to teach.
When training it, it's also teaching us how to get better at teaching our dog -
- building criteria for reinforcement- duration, distance, distraction
- timing of reinforcement
- delivery of reinforcement - where and why
- our mechanics - how to move etc
You'll notice that we are almost, if not totally, silent towards Roxy during this process - we talk less and observe and listen more. The time to start adding verbal cues comes later.
Often, we both overestimate and underestimate physical praise and petting as reinforcement and use them at the wrong times.
You can see in the second half of the video, that Roxy gets up as I move around. This is fine as we are just gathering information at this point. We simply reset her.
On the last point, Roxy, at 11 weeks is calm and settled here. And she still finds certain movements from me challenging. Think about how absolutely impossible it would be for her to even listen to anything her human is asking/telling her to do when a stranger tries to pet her or if someone comes into the house (sit, sit, Sit)
Take it slowly, practice often, reinforce well.
