110▶️ Fragile (Roland TR-6S Rhythm Performer // S-1 Tweak Synth // J-6 Chord Synth)

Here's a 2x 2-Minute jam featuring 3 little boxes from Roland: the TR-6S (Drums), the S-1 (Bass and Arp) and the J-6 (Pads) 🐺
I've recorded a few patterns of each of the 3 instruments which are being chained up live in this jam.
On the DRUMS side played by the TR6S, there is quite a lot going on: I mainly used the Analog Circuit Behavior and FM Engines for the drum sounds. I used a few of the real time performance tools available: STEP LOOP, FILL IN, MASTER FX (Fuzz). I also took advantage of the polymectri capabilities of the sequencer, where the KICK's sequence length is different from the rest of the pattern (on the first part, it's a 6-step sequence playing, and on the last part, a 5-step sequence 😉).
For the BASS & ARP parts, I used the S1 (which fortunately is polyphonic 😃). I also played with its integrated "Riser" effect for the transitions.
I recorded 3 patterns on the J-6, among which the last one is being syncopated thanks its "phrase type" feature (a bit like an arpeggiator effect). The J-6 is being synced to the S-1 by their analog clocks (through the translucent cable, where you can see a little red LED lightening up with each clock pulse coming into the J-6).

Hey thanks for your comment! 😃 The TR-6S is a small but quite powerful and versatile drum machine thanks to its 3 engines (ACB, FM and Sample), all its cool performance tools (Faders, Stutter, Master Effect, Fill, etc.) and its nice sequencer with automation, probability etc. (wish you could shift notes off the grid though!). @@2MinuteWarning thanks, you're right. Bought a tr-6s a week ago and a Keystep Pro a year ago. Those videos was the slap i needed to wake up and start trying to use my synths! Question: To avoid "stealing" a track (nr1) on the KSP, i understand that you use the tr-6s internal pattern and sequencer. Is that what you prefer or just a compromise to have more tracks free on the KSP?

@@matsoanderson2435 Nice for your combo KSP and TR-6S! 👍 There are a couple of reasons I might use TR-6S internal pattern and sequencer. The more obvious one is indeed to be able to use the 4 tracks of the KSP to sequence other synths 😉 But sometimes I use the sequencer of the TR-6S for example to be able to use its STEP LOOP feature (for breaks, fills...), or to record automation in its internal sequencer etc.

Hey thanks LostBoii for your kind words! 🙏 The TR-6S really is a very powerful and versatile drum machine (for such a small footprint) 🤩 Among the small boxes, the S-1 is without any doubt the more interesting (all the more it has 4 voices of polyphony). I think that it is a very good companion to the TR-6S (and you'll have quite some fun with it 😉). Next to these 2 instruments, the J-6 feels more like a gadget even if its chord and phrase style features are interesting (but concerning sound design, you really can't do a lot).

Really cool jam and great setup! Especially 1:08 brings me a true goosebump!! I've just grab the S-1 recently and still trying to discover how does its specs work. Your video is too inspiring to me from this aspect. May I ask you, how do you play two separate tracks both arpeggiator sequence and bassline together at the same time on S-1? Has that tiny monster multitrack play feature?

Thanks Cihan Kircil for your feedback, really appreciate it! 😃🙏 Unfortunately the S-1 is not multi-timbral 😊 I just used the 4 voices of polyphony here where the same sound (and only track available) is playing the bass part and on the upper part of the keyboard, the arpeggiator sequence (all was recorded in the internal sequencer without using the ARPEGGIO of the S-1). Excellent jam dude, I love my S-1, such a great synth. What’s your thoughts on the J-6, I know it’s kinda limited in what you can do with its sounds but is the chord functionality pretty deep?

Thanks mate! 😃 The S-1 really is a beautiful synth for such a small footprint! Indeed the J-6 is quite limited in sound designing etc. but can help bring some new ideas thanks to its chord function (and phrase styles/variations). However even with this chord function, you can't really customize a set of chords in order to play it live for example. You must use the factory set of chords (you can however sequencer chords from different "sets" if needed. I think that with time I could get tired of the J-6 (but not the S-1 😊).

Hey glad you liked it! 😀 As far as I remember for the sync signal chain, the S-1 and J-6 are synced by their analog clock (translucent cable), and the TR-6S is synced to my DAW by USB (same thing for the S-1 or J-6, don't really remember 😊). As for the audio chain, each instrument is going into my soundcard, acting as the audio mixer 😉

You are welcome! I love the TR-6S, so powerful for such a small box 🤩 You can sync all 3 without using a computer, just using MIDI. You'll need adapters though as the TR-6S only has 5-pin DIN MiDI (no MIDI by TRS jack as on the S-1 and J-6). For the audio chain, as the TR-6S doesn't have physical audio inputs, you can connect its audio out to the J-6 Mix in for example, and the J-6 Mix out to the S-1 Mix in (no need for a mixer this way, even if I recommend getting a small mixer at some point in order to easily mix, EQ, add effects etc. 😉)
