This is awesome. It looks totally moulded, but that doesn't explain the grooves on that "cover", unless it is removable. This lock requires me to pick 2,3,4 but not sure as yet the order if binding. I think 4 or three are the first two. A great video.
@BoiseBrit5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't always come off, i believe its brand dependent... I have two clear locks now with snapped top covers lol It appears some manufacturers put a small amount of superglue either side in the middle of the cover plate to secure it. Please check very closely to see if it looks like glue might have been applied, if it has... unless you are very lucky and the glue gives, there is a chance of ending up with your cover plate cracking in half as mine did.
@ChristmasLore4 жыл бұрын
@@BoiseBrit , There are only very few transparent locks on which that part comes off. I've looked purposedly, and didn't find any, then I had to finally order a cheap set because my Southord was too thin to work on them, and....by cheer chance found a really cheap set (1o€) that finally came with one! But that's far from the majority, they're hard to find, even on Amazon. It was pure luck! (And the set came with 17 thick picks, and...6 tensionwrenchs, 4 of them top of the keyway, a real bargain!) What's not cheap or easy to find? Small amount of security pins, or even pins. On Amazon France, they only have 3 rekeying kit, from 70 to 1oo€... On locksmiths' websites, they usually sell the pins by huge quantity also... The only way would be somehow getting some old locks and then take the pins from those... I might ask my landlord for some, he's the type to keep some in his working shed.

*Warning see this before you try pushing the cover out* Some clear lock manufacturers apply a drop of super glue on either side of the cover to hold it in place, so check before you pop it out or you may crack the cover into two pieces. If your's have glue, you can try stabbing the sides with utility knives to break the glue and carefully, repeat small pushes on the cover and the glue should break eventually without breaking the cover piece. At least that worked for me. Thanks for the great video BTW!

Thanks for this video. It is most useful even 3½ years later as I take up a new hobby for Covid-19 lockdowns. Especially the bit about re-installing the pawls. I thought for a while that I had totally borked my lock. One thing you might have mentioned is which direction the bevels on the pins should point. In my acrylic padlock both the key pins and driver pins are flat on one end and have a slight bevel on the other. My logic tells me that the 'pointy bits' of both should point down, away from that cap on top of the bible. So the bevel on the key pins interact with the, well, key, and the bevel on the driver pins interact with the shear line/core/plug. I hope this is correct. Thanks again for your videos.

I know this post is old but Ive recently gotten really into picking locks and stuff due to being diagnosed with a terminal illness. I have alot of free time and this little hobby fills that time up and keeps my mind from wandering places it shouldn't, and your videos have been an EXTREME help. I recently bought one of these locks and like you said it came from the factory or wherever, to where I only have to pick one pin to unlock it. Do I have to buy new key pins to change that or can I maybe grind them down to make them shorter or whatever to where I at least have to pick more than one lol. Excuse me if you mentioned this in your video cuz I sure didn't catch it.

If you do not care about the key working the easiest thing would be to just add some Master Lock / American lock keypins. If the driver pins are sitting at the shearline because the keypins are too tall you could consider filing them down and that should work. Also consider flipping the driver pins over so the round part hits the spring. I am pretty sure they did not use true driver pins and placed keypins up top

COOL! I didn't know you could disassemble those. All I really needed to know was how to access the bible, I thought it was sealed with resin. I have several of these locks, half the time when you buy a "set" of some kind, it comes with another one of these. But until now I thought they were pretty much useless once you looked at your first and seen how they worked. Great for seeing how locks work, but way too sloppy and easy to be practice as a practice lock. So I prefered the cutaway cylinders sparrows offer. But now...different story. Now I just need to know where to get other pinsets that don't cost a fortune. A good place to get springs cheap would be helpful too because us newbies (at least me anyway) sometimes learn the hard way and end up mangling a spring or two. I wish I had watched a video on how to gut a lock and re-assemble before I tried it on my own, but they say lessons learned the hard or painful way are the ones you never forget.

Clear and very entertaining intructions and information. However these acrylic locks have bad tolerances and the real picking experience on a quality brass lock can differ a lot. Potti314 They are but my two qualms are 1. Typically they are a Schlage keyway which I feel is not open enough for a beginner 2. For left handed people like myself it is cutout on the less ideal side which makes them hard to utilize. The tolerances are less on these but it teaches the concept. I think the best way for someone in the US to learn is on a Kwikset progressive pinned personally.

Maxime Bouillot They should be the same diameter, I honestly think they used keypins for drivers to save money. American and Master Lock pins work great on these

How does the feedback feel compeard to a metal lock
@HelpfulLockPicker5 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue is the plastic locks are made cheaply and often you don't have to pick all the pins. I would recommend a metal one if you had the option

Is there any other way to open up the lock disassemble the lock without taking of that cap you take off? I'm saying that because mine doesn't have a rubber cap and it's instead acrylic and molded in place. I really need to disassemble the lock because an internal spring has rust and the only way to access that part and lubricate it is by gutting the lock.

I dropped my lock and everything came out. to still use the key I need to put the key in and drop the pins in so they are all flush with the barrel?
@HelpfulLockPicker6 жыл бұрын
You want to make sure all the key pins are flush at the top of the plug so that the driver pins are pushed out completely out of the way for the key to work
@jamesfair97515 жыл бұрын
Yes as long as they sit flush on top the barrel with the key inserted it will work. Not a fraction of a mm sticking out or a fraction recessed inside the barrel they need to be perfectly flush.

@HelpfulLockPicker3 жыл бұрын

@jasonscott15943 жыл бұрын
Sparrows has a set of progression locks- but they don't have a cutaway. You could also just get repin a lock, as seen here, to make it easier or harder
@stephenhammond17453 жыл бұрын
@@jasonscott1594 Sparrow does have a cut-away lock (mine came with 5 spools but they sell a standard pin version as well). It's similar to their progressive locks and the pins are interchangeable between them all. They also sell a re-pinning kit with normal and security pins (and no, I don't work for Sparrow).
