In today's adventure, I talk a little about having multiple copies of the same record and the space they take up in the collection. I also mention two other great channels you should check out: Jeff Party ( / @jeffparty ) and Melinda Murphy (kzbin.info/door/ID5.... Be sure you're subscribed to my channel and comment with your thoughts down below. Thanks for watching!

I love culling the collection. I started selling at an antique shop about 2 years ago now and I sell my doubles and things I’m not interested in anymore. It’s really helped my collection quite a bit. I recycle that money back into my collection. I’ve never been an audiophile but I upgraded my turntable this past year and I can hear the differences in pressings much better now so I am starting to look for better sounding presses. Great video. It’s good to see you and thanks for the shout. That was unexpected! Cheers, Brian🍀

Hi Tommy. Nice topic...to be honest I have hardly any doubles, let alone triplets or quadruplets...a vanishingly small number (just don't have the space). Damn, I always get jealous when I see your record-shop style racks. Always great to see you.
@TommyBurton75
@TommyBurton75 3 жыл бұрын
I am so glad to have those racks. And the space for them. I think alot of those multiples are a result of hoarding tendencies. It's a matter of finding that better copy and just holding on to the older ones. Thanks! TB

Hey Tommy - Thanks for the kind words. And of course I’m right there in agreement with what you say. The music fan/listener in me overtook the collector in me some time ago. When I want to listen to a particular album these days (“Rubber Soul” is a good example for me too), having half a dozen copies suddenly seems silly, as there’s always one mono copy and one stereo copy to which I’m going to gravitate. So why have the others? It’s time for me to do a cull as well, I think. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Stay well - Jeff

Thanks. As you said in your video, something to the effect of listening to music should be fun. I love to hear a great record that has been mastered and pressed well. And the truth is, why seek out a minty original when I can get a better sounding reissue for a lot less? It's not only practical, but it's economical. There's always records to find, so there's no sense in hoarding multiples when someone else can enjoy them. TB

Such a quandary Tommy. Since I started over I have limited my space so I need to keep things moving out of the collection. I have been finding some great quality pressings but certain artist like Miles Davis I want to keep the OG. My collection is more about quality over quantity now. Great thoughts. Steve

Thanks! The beautiful thing about posing such questions like this is that we all have our own quirks in our collecting habits. So there's no incorrect answers! I find it almost laughable that I avoided even buying a copy of Get The Knack because I was searching out the elusive "double Wally" pressing. It's a common record that's not very expensive. Yet I kept avoiding it until I found "the one." Yet, I can somehow keep buying the same Michael Nesmith records over and over just because I've somehow trained my mind to buy those things when I see them. Weird. Why not let some other fan find it too? We record people are a strange breed. Take care... TB

Hey Tommy, that is exactly where I am now. And I feel like I have started something. A lot of what I have been letting go are sealed records that I have had for years and if after all this time I haven't listened to it yet, I certainly won't miss it. And many of these are already worth a bunch and not at all hard to let go. I thought it would be sad to lose some of these things, but I have found that it is also fun. It's a lot more fun than working for a living. I've sold about 200 albums so far and haven't even made a tiny dent in my collection. So good luck with the process. Great video. Take care...

Thanks, Tim. I stay on my friend Sean about the sealed records he keeps. I'm always telling him to get rid of them and make room for stuff he does want. As I said, there is a difference between a collector and a music fan. And alot of us are both. TB

@@TommyBurton75 Interesting ... I used to watch a lot of the VC videos but grew tired off people picking stuff up just for the sake of it - I found a lot it a bit sad and depressing. Buy what you want - it's not the size of the collection or the amount of big scores - it's about the music and your enjoyment of it.

Great video. Every time I downsize I regret certain albums that I get rid of though. Lol. I only have multiple copies of one record, but I understand what you’re saying. I would love an original copy of Head. I have Alternate Head on vinyl.
@TommyBurton75
@TommyBurton75 3 жыл бұрын
That's another question to ask when downsizing: "Will I regret this?" Or "Will I miss this?" A great example for me is the Paul McCartney album Pipes of Peace. Not a great album and not one I go to on a regular basis. Also not particularly valuable. I had a very nice original copy until last year when I grabbed the new double reissue at Barnes and Noble for half off. So, why keep that original? I'm not ever going to pull it to listen to. It won't be missed. That Kevin Gray Head from Rhino is a thing of beauty. It blows the original out of the water. It's a great pressing... TB

I see where you're coming from. Some people will just have one copy of an record or they will have multiple copies. For music I mainly collect cds and try to buy deluxe editions if they're available. Some of the Aretha Atlantic albums I have more than copy via different box sets. For some if they haven't got the space, maybe they will decide to downsize their collections.

And I am not knocking anyone who wants to keep as many copies of a beloved album. If it's something they enjoy (and they have the space), then I think it's great. My problem is that I love so much music and I don't have the time to compare pressings. As I said in my video, I will keep a mono and a stereo. And I will alternate them. TB

Tommy great video. You hit the nail on the head how many copies can you own. My concern has been price. How much am I willing to spend on anything. And the thrill of the chase. I’m a man on a limited budget and I get what I can afford. And like you said, I’ll buy another copy if it’s an upgrade to the one I have. I love to go thrifting and finding a good band in vg or nm shape is what keeps me going. Most expensive things like box sets are usually family gifts or if I find a really good deal. Thank you again. Well done. Peace love and rock and roll ✌️

I have that same problem when it comes to budget. If I had Mick Jagger money, I'd just buy whatever. Part of the fun of collecting for me is the hunt. Some of my most valuable records I have are thrift finds. Which makes it cool. Thanks for watching and commenting. TB

There are only a few albums I have multiple copies of,. One is American beauty by the grateful Dead and I didn't seek out multiple copies it just happened that way. But for the most part man I just want to really good sounding copy of an album a great video brother

Yeah. I don't think many of us start out with the mindset that we need multiple pressings of a particular album. Sometimes, we just end up with them. Which is funny because there are some albums I just wouldn't even buy until I found the pressing I was looking for. Thanks for tuning in... TB

Speaking of, I'll prob sell my US first press Reprise Kinks "Face to Face" stereo because my mono PRT and mono 2015 Sanctuary reissues actually sound way better. Thanks for making this video. I have 3 copies of The Guess Who's "Wheatfield Soul." I'll keep the one in best shape and either give away the others or sell the extras. But why is it so hard to do that? Maybe I think, if I accidentally scratch one of these I'll have an extra and it'll be cheaper today than it will be in 5 years... I dunno? Sometimes the OG pressings have more punch and more bass than the reissues, but sometimes the reissues win. I used to not care about this stuff until I started selling on Discogs and had to distinguish from the Monarch pressing and the Scranton pressings. Subbed! Thanks for the awesome video! If you wanna purge your 96 Tears album, let me know!

Hi Tommy, i always go for the original when i buy records. I dont want the best sounding version , i will rather have the genuine sound that was produced in the studio when the record was made no matter how poor the sound quality might be. Or else i might as well get rid of my albums and buy cd instead.

I also have multiple copies of the same records. If I had to, I'd probably keep the originals and let go of the new pressings. And I would listen to the old pressings. Listen to them, not abuse them. Then I have the best of both worlds. Good music and investment value.

I'm always in pursuit of that perfect pressing or best sounding. It can be maddening at times, but it's also a little too academic. At the end of the day, the question should always be, "What's the best way to enjoy this music?"

I do like to get some different pressings for this reason . Is with different Countries you do get different sounds on them . But yes it is a bit crazy to have 7 American copies let just say Abby Road lol . But it is hard to pass on something that I do collect !!! I do think there are days were I will pass on it .... And then there is days I do wont every copy I can find lol .... It is such a double edge sword ..... I know now that some day I will need to down size ... For that Nursing Home lol but for now I am going to keep on spinning it . Great video my friend :).......... Ps O if you do decide to get ride of some vinyl .... You know how to get in touch with me lol !!!!!

Never ever get rid of an alternate pressing. Do you know how many times different pressings have different mixes perhaps because the artist or label changed something or because the wrong masters were pulled. Body Talk Lp by George Benson was issued unknowingly with alternate takes in place of the issued version by CBS on reissue. After 1988, Michael Jackson changed the album Bad atleast 5 times mainly when a new single was cut. He would switch versions including removing most of the horns from "Bad". So many times songs are cut short or noise reduction is added and the track will be faded a few seconds sooner or you'll hear a swoosh on the fade. By looking at the artists behind you, I must ask, do you collect 45's? So many different edits, mixes, reverb, eq, speed deviations, alternate vocals in given spots, ect. I have tons of compilations that I don't even think of throwing out. In the 90's, my radio station would go with a remix when a song was peaking and that would give it new life. Do you not hear a difference between the album version of Free's "All right now" and the remix with different instrumentation that you hear on the radio? Many think Madonna's Immaculate Collection is a Greatest hits album but it's a collection of late 80's remixes and not made of 45's or album cuts. I'm a member of a site called Top 40 music on cd spearheaded by Paul Downy. There's very specific information about given songs and how they differ when issued/reissued. One is a very lonesome number and why should you have to choose between pressings/versions? If in possession of multiple versions, you have the power of choice. If you're not into the whole 45 thing or "correct hit version" chase then I guess you could sell especially if you'll get what you paid for including shipping, tax, and time spent in the chase. Take a second look at O.G. and native country before trading up. For cds, don't toss anything from Japan.
@TommyBurton75
@TommyBurton75 3 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong here: I would never get rid of something just because I have more than one. For example, the Brian Wilson solo album from 1988. The new reissue is a remix. So I keep my original press with it. Same with alot of my Beatles stuff. I'm strictly talking about albums where I have multiple copies of and I mainly will listen to the same one. I think, unless I am major fan of a particular artist, then comparing mixes/pressings can take the fun out of it. And, for me, listening should be fun. I use the Hoffman forums as a great reference to research pressing, mixes, etc. So it's a combination of research, my ears, and just plain practicality. Thanks for commenting! TB

Hey Tommy, I don’t get it with McCartney III and the color vinyl records and McCartney is definitely milking it. I have 2 pressings on cd regular and the Target Copy. Great discussion Tommy. I'm in the same boat with stuff. Not sure what to do. Let me ask you a question, when you're ready to unload stuff, how do you do it? Do you do it online, or do you bring stuff to a store? Any tips if I bring a stack to a store? thanks great video...Matt
@TommyBurton75
@TommyBurton75 3 жыл бұрын
I have done a little of it all. I guess it depends. I don't see the benefit of selling a 5 dollar record online, so I've got some record pals who enjoy my hand-me-downs. It gives me pleasure because I love to share great music. Your best best for maximizing your dollar is to sell online. If it's a valuable record, then you're likely to get top dollar from someone who wants that particular title. Stores will never give you the "worth" of a record just because they need to operate on a profit. Which is understandable. I know the few times I have done this here, they will offer a store credit. The credit is usually better than whatever cash they will give. So, if you've got your eye on something at a local store, a trade may be worked out to everyone's advantage. In the case of my downsizing, I am working out a deal on some trades with friends. It saves me the trouble of listing them individually and they get some cool records. It's a win-win. TB
