I'm purging 75% of my Record Collection this year. I'll still buy some vinyl, but more CDs.

Funny, over the last couple years I've been gravitating back toward cd's myself. Seems like they are on the rise again which is amazing to see. Let's just hope the CD industry doesn't turn into a boutique industry the way records have gone over the past decade or so.

Wow you nailed it, buying for the music , not the item, i can so relate to this. I was getting sucked into those limited edition, pristine , remasterd, etc etc( still in shrink lol) but once i bought them, some i never played, i was already on to the next item. Crazy and not healthy for the bank balance. All the best to you.

You're reaching that place that I hit a few years ago. I wasn't a vinyl collector but had thousands and thousands of CDs and I'm still in the process of culling. It is something that takes time, a thoughtful process, that is quite rewarding. Keep us updated on the progress and how you're going about the actual culling.

2022-23 marks an even 50 years that I’ve been collecting records. It’s very hard, and I know that you yourself Joe can agree with this, because we came of age in the post-“Rock Around the Clock” era, when music writing, production and performance took a monstrous quantum leap in unbelievable quality. Elvis Presley and the Beatles ushered in simply unforgettable music, and it’s so hard to say goodbye to so much of it. Some people have an easier time releasing material, others it’s quite difficult to let go. I have things I’ve gotten over the last 50 that I’ve never seen again, so I belong to that latter group. It’s hard man, it’s hard. I wish you much luck, Joe. Hope you can make the right calls on some unbelievable music. ✊

I can relate Joe. I have just under a thousand records and I try to keep it that way with intermittent purges every now and then. One rule that I’ve stuck with for the last twenty-plus years or so, is that I don’t collect any LP’s that didn’t originally come out in the vinyl era - for me, roughly ending around 84’ or 85’. So for example, all my Dylan past that time, are only on CD’s, same with solo Beatles, Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison releases. And things like the Beatles “Anthology” compilations, or Let It Be Naked”, I feel no need to have on vinyl - because I have no nostalgia for them being on that format. But I am still occasionally buying LP records if I feel that I’m not likely to find them on CD. Take care.

Wow. I'm surprised by how many are saying they are in a similar position. That said, I'm thinning out the records as well. For a long time it was about the item and not the music so much. Now I have too many items. Good luck to all this year!

Just finding your channel. Interesting stuff. I find I do the same thing as you with vinyl because I really like the collecting aspect. Collecting CDs is so much easier. In the future I will probably cut down my vinyl collection to the albums I really really like as opposed to those I've accumulated just to have.

About 6 months ago, I did a vinyl culling. I’m actually going to do another soon. I decided to collect older albums with interesting covers and any with amazing art. I’m trying to collect cds in digipacks - I like the full cover art. It’s healthy to go through our collections every so often and make changes. It keeps the collections vibrant.

At one point in my life I moved 5 times in 11 years! After move #3, I purged my collection. I only kept my absolute favorites (still over 500 albums) and have bought only two since. You’re right, albums are cumbersome and heavy to move. Since 98% of my listening involves CDs, why keep all those albums? I have them all sleeved and displayed in my studio. Nostalgia keeps me from selling or giving away the rest!

I moved during the summer of 2020 and boxing and lifting all my vinyl made me realize that I really didn't need everything I had. As I went through everything after the move, I started separating out records I still hadn't even played yet or others that were not essential to hang on to. I sampled them track by track and found that so many of them could go and I'd never miss them. I eventually took some crates of LP's to a local record show and sold off a lot of them. I've done that 3 times so far and made decent money. A lot of these were records I picked up at thrift stores, other record shows or even on-line and they didn't cost that much. Others were newer and more expensive and those sold very well. I still have more to go through and I'm planning to do more record shows in the future as I downsize further. I'm buying much less music these days and it's mostly CD's when I do. Like you, I will still pick up certain things that appeal to me or are by some of my favorite artists but bringing things in strictly because of the collectable factor has been greatly reduced. Recognizing want vs. need helps the decision making a great deal. Once you start the purge, it becomes easier and easier. It's such a relief. Good luck with your process.

You're 100% right. Often people tend to buy things for the sake of collecting & forget it's about the music. We don't need to collect every "colored vinyl variation", "bootleg", "picture disc" or every band's discography. I only collect the discography of artists i truly love & the rest if i'm interested a Greatest Hits CD or streaming it is enough.

My original intent was to start selling off my collection when I retire. I had started downsizing in 2014. In 2016 we bought a coop and having all the extra space I bought some IKEA Expedits and started buying again. When the events of March 2020 hit my gut feeling almost immediately was that something on a biblical scale is unfolding. And it ain't good. So I started selling again. Once I sold my two main collections, Iron Maiden and The Runaways [as lots, could not break them up] there was no looking back. It was the right decision for me. I agree with you Joe on all the points you make here about vinyl. My love for it has not waned but sometimes circumstances dictate courses of action where passion has to take a back seat to priority. I no longer think it wise to have a deep, personal and financial connection to anything physical that cannot be quickly moved or that can be gone in an instant should catastrophe strike. I've used the money from selling my collection to invest in making the uncertain future as easy to weather as possible. One of the greatest joys I've gotten from this is finally getting my wife to zip it with "you never have any money in the bank". Whenever she would say this, which was often I would point to the shelves and shelves of vinyl. Her response was always "pee-pee money" and she would do this thing with her hand like flicking her wrist tossing change towards a begger. It was very annoying. Now, every time I sell a record I call her over to the computer. I say "look honey. I bought this at the Valley Stream flea market in 1996 for $1". I then show her the screen where it sold for $50. I then say "how much is that dollar that you put in the bank back in 1996 worth now, huh? Nothing right, inflation gobbled it all up huh? Pee-pee money, what was that"? Oh the satisfaction! I never considered vinyl a speculative instrument but at the same time I knew it was a more sound way of saving then the bank. Best of luck Joe.

Before selling something it's best to imagine if you'll ever miss it in future, if not then it's good to go. Irreplaceable items tend to cause later regret after selling, more so than something that's readily available. (Ebay or discogs will get you the most money; maybe start an ebay page and wait 'til you're sure you're moving and then list a load of stuff.)

I appreciate your honesty Joe! I want to thin my collection too. I think it will be fun to go through the collection and pare down. Perhaps an idea would be to create vids on your process of how to thin the collection down to "essentials". I would be interested to learn how others approach thinning their collections. I knew someone who took photographs of the front, back, and labels prior to their parting with specific titles in case they ever wanted to go back and see the records they let go of. Not a bad idea.

I hardly play any of them, and the excitement of 2016 and getting vinyl I had once on say cassette and then cd wained around 2019/20. I saw some guy had bought 8 versions of the latest Tears for Fears album, and he only plays the black one. I still buy vinyl but I probably only bought about 10 last year. Hi Joe, I just wanted to say I totally understand where you're coming from. When CD's first come out I decided to sell all my non-Beatles vinyl also, that was around 89-90. It suited me fine for many years, then I went through a period of seriously regretting it, then I got over that, when I discovered streaming, Spotify in particular. I don't even buy CDs anymore! I haven't for years. I don't live in a big house and the most important thing to me is my Beatles Collection, which is very large and growing fast. I LIVE for Beatles vinyl, so streaming allows more room from other artists vinyl & CD's. I can play literally anything ever released with the push of a button, on TV, in my car, on my phone etc. And it only costs 12 bucks a month! I AM NOT from Spotify by the way! 😄 Even all The Beatles releases, deluxe box sets etc. are on there! Paul's whole new singles box is free... I will always buy Beatles vinyl, and the odd other artist also, but believe me, streaming is even easier!

😊⭐👍. Bonne Chance, Joe. I have made a somewhat similar decision with my music and my movies. Mine starts with quality over quantity as a guiding principle. I currently have a movie moratorium. My vinyl is relatively small in comparison to my CDs. I am intending to maintain this general approach since it is fairly easy for me to enjoy, to store, and to move when necessary. I love vinyl, but CDs are my jam. I think that you doing a Record Show in the Spring/Summer would make a fab series of videos. It could be a source of humor. Rock Always! - Heather

Just posing the question - why limit this to non-Beatles vinyl? Personally I only buy CD''s, but long ago decided I don''t need several copies of the same album in my collection. So, when The Beatles 2009 remasters were released, for example, I got rid of the 1987 CD's. The one exception I make is in instances such as the remixed Lennon CD's released 2000-2005. I have all of those in addition to the 2010 remasters, due to the different mixes on each version,

I am glad I didn't get the vinyl bug. When I was a kid, vinyl was on its way out and CDs were being introduced. I got hooked on buying CDs. I got sick of having this huge collection. I strictly download now unless the CD is cheaper than buying the download. My hearing isn't good enough, and I'm not going to spend the money, to get the best sound. I can store my music on my computer and my backup drives are smaller than one Super Deluxe box set.

I've said it before on your channel. I love CDs. They work well, and they give me artwork and a disc I can enjoy. I have bought used CDs that were made 40 years ago that play fine. If you get a good pre-amp, a CD can sound "like vinyl". I still have vinyl, 8-track and tapes, but CDs have been with me through all my collections. I think the table at a show sounds like a great idea to move unwanted vinyl.

You should buy Taylor Swift albums. She's really good! Start with "folklore". ha! Besides, her stuff retains its value, sometimes and then some. I bought two vinyl singles by Taylor for around $20 each. And now, one is worth $150 and the other $250. 😀 I see what you mean. I was thinking this when you showed all those old Peter & Gordon LP's. Sure, they look nice, but a best of CD would suffice. And shrinkwrap vs not shouldn't matter, if you already have a mint or near mint pressing. But I could see upgrading, if you only had a poor or okay copy of something. I wouldn't even be a completist on George Harrison or Ringo Starr. But, I fully understand why you would be, for The Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

I don't believe you Joe!!! lol. Personally, I love the record store and rant videos. Love it when you rank albums, or songs, or review albums. I don't collect vinyl anymore, but, I have every vinyl record I ever bought back in the 70's and 80's. So, do what you wanna do. It's your life. I do see where you are coming from as to why you are downsizing. It should be about the music. For me, one thing I love about the vinyl, is THE SIZE. The artwork, the album cover, the poster inside. The packaging of an album is a lost art. That's what I love about vinyl. But, I agree with you, it does take up space. So, do what you gotta do. I'm gonna keep watching.

The worst thing about vinyl records is definitely moving them. I still have hundreds of records in storage in the States because I could not afford to move them overseas and do not have the space anyway. I'm lucky I have family with a lot of extra storage space, but I still wish I had downsized before I left.

I was brought kicking and screaming into the CD age in the mid 90s but since then CDs have got better value as their fashionability died. I have about 1000 or so CDs and they too take an age to move and l have about 150 LPs but unless they are cheaper than a CD l look at it in terms of bang for your buck. CDs are great despite the bad publicity. I couldn't justify paying what an LP costs and, l can't buy second hand because l had a terrible handicap with vinyl back in the day, namely, it had to have a pristine uncreased cover and that was a annoying challenge each time l bought a record!

Great video on a very interesting topic, for all of us music fans. I own about 760 cds and they don't take that much space, which is great:) Vinyl I only own around 35 or 40 tops, which is a bit of a pity, but I own those mostly for the covers, and because I think they are masterpieces( Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac...). Anyway, I get where you're coming from with your decision. Great move!

Joe, I’m not planning on getting rid of any of my vinyl but I am considering downsizing my Beatles collection of of other collectibles. Do you have any sources of buyers of non-record/CD memorabilia? Congratulations on eleven years Joe 👍👍 I can see that same thing what you are doing if it is daily or weekly that othe people that have their own KZbin chanels like you Joe they have all this vinyl laying around and wonder what should they do ? sooner or later something will come up and changes have to be made I know some like to be celbrities on here not just for updates on music just to show and tell we all love our vinyl and yes it takes up space but you have to ask yourself do you really need to buy that $300 Kiss Creatures Of The Night box set when you have two CD's and one LP its not like years ago we all were happy just to own one copy of each album by that same artist if you had two of the some you may get asked why you have two copies ? It all changed after CD's and CD box sets that came out 34 years ago with unreleased stuff while some of us ditched our turntables along with the records and stayed with the CD's I kept my turntable and got rid of some of my 80's artist on vinyl but did not think I would ever get back into buying vinyl again and to start seeing them on record shelves again . I love the CD's better than the cassette tape for burning and making coppies and ripping them into your computer and they do not take up that much space if you have most of your CD's in the original plastict jewl cases black ' clear' or double get baggies covers like you do with your LP's and store them in 16x16 CD boxes that originaly store 100 CD's with case you would be amazed with how much storage you will have without shelves and people looking at your collection while it is hidden away . Keep Up the Good Work Joe 👍👍

Fortunately or unfortunately depending how you look at it I have kept every bloody music format I ever bought cassettes,8 tracks, lps, cds, 45s, 78s, for the last 40 some-odd yrs. As they break I throw them out. My daughter listens to vinyl so every once in a while I’ll let her take 5 lps. My lps were put away for a long time when cds came out. No room for them. I focused on my Beatles collection and cds when I ran out of room I downloaded all my cds to an external hard drive to still have access to them now those are all put away now. I to have a move coming up this year haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the lp/cd collection yet. But I’m thing out the Beatles memorabilia collection while I’m laid up after my surgery on the 10th..One question does this mean your going after Beatles memorabilia after you purge?

Joe I understand it can get to be a lot after while I been laying off Non Beatles Vinyl of Late . I did get Eric Burdon and War complete vinyl collection. I played all weekend. But I just buy albums I will go back and play. With cd too! The only thing I collect is the 50th anniversary edition with outtakes. Plus new vinyl has gone up in price so I have to be more picky. I hope you had a great New Year’s Eve and have a great day!!

Hey Joe, just watched your latest video on slowing down in purchasing vinyls. I just want to express, that I always have great respect for your decisions and opinions. Watching it, one of George Harrison‘s great tunes came to my mind: The Light That Has Lighted The World. This song is all about changes and how important they are naturally. So keep on changing, for that’s so appropriate for a human being. Big respects from Germany by a dedicated CD buyer of similar reasons 👍🏻🍀

I did a similar move this past July. Except I got rid of about 1000 CDs which I gave away for free, and kept my vinyl. I did keep my Beatles/Beatles related CDs (about 120) however, even as badly as they mostly sound. Vinyl can sound better than CDs, but usually doesn't. After listening to 24/96 recordings, I felt my CDs were inferior and my goal is to replace them eventually with 24/96 files as they become available (more and more). Also, one terrible aspect of CDs, with very few exceptions, they do NOT hold any value at all. Just worthless pieces of plastic all in all.

I as a record collector and completist you're making a big mistake most of your vinyl. Vinyl increases in value over time especially ones that go out of Print. Over the last five years or so vinyl production has increased immensely. A lot of young people are buying vinyl more than CDs and almost any new release comes out on vinyl which is way cool for any. There are many re issues of classic albums that are reprinted many of them on colored vinyl sure to be collector items down the line since many are limited edition. Of course you will do what you want to but in ten years you'll probably be sorry you got rid of most of your vinyl. CDs are fine but most cases they don't compare to the vinyl versions Viva vinyl forever!!!!

@@vinylboy2539 You do know the difference between digital and analog? You can’t compare VHS tapes or cassettes to CD’s. Tapes can malfunction or break, not likely for a CD. I have had no problem playing any cd. As long as you take care of them there should be no problem. Yeah, you may have to install a CD player in a newer car. I burn my cds and then load it on an iPod and play it in the car. Works fine for me. Your logic is flawed.
