Chris Hillman was the sleeper talent in the Byrds. Anyone that has listened to the boxed set from 1990 and paid attention to the credits for each tune will come to understand that. The Manhattan probably some Aleve vocal or pursued a writing credit before 1966 when Jean Clark made his exit. Suddenly, Chris was unpacking ditties like “Time Between”, “Have You Seen Her Face” and “Artificial Energy”. Even though his departure in 1969 meant that Jim McGuinn was not only the constant but essentially using the band’s identity strictly for himself, I don’t blame Chris for having decided he wanted to spread his wings.

Hi Lee, whilst listening to this I remembered that I have two albums by The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. This featured J. D. Souther, Chris Hillman and Richie Furay. I believe they only made the two albums and one of them featured the original version of Prisoner In Disguise by J. D. Souther which was recorded by Linda Ronstadt. Like you say the spider web of links continues !

Wonderful. You just read a roll call of my favorite artists, from my youth in the '60s and to this very day. So many others from the genre as well. You always do this to me, getting me reflecting... but thank you. I grew up in the West San Fernando Valley in the mid '50s to '70s, hanging out in the hills, canyons and beach towns. Saw plenty of these folks play locally and would run into some just doing the day to days. Lived in Old Topanga Cyn awhile. Seeing my heroes play at the Topanga Corral will always be strong in my memories. Used to see Neil golf at the Woodland Hills Country Club from my grandparents' yard along the fence line. Being in the zone, I snatched up many demo and bootleg discs at used record stores in the Valley and Hollywood. Still have all my records, salted away in my storage mtn. I know I'd find you somewhere in those grooves as well, Leland. Another project! Cheers!

Another cool thing about Chris Hillman, here he plays guitar but his original instrument was bass with the Byrds. He also is a really good mandolin player. John Jorgensen who produced the first song is even more versatile, playing at least half a dozen instruments at the highest level.

Many bass player’s understanding and playing music is beyond the instrument noted. Leland, if my memory is correct, first studied piano. Not all bass players can write charts for other musicians. One of my favorite bass players Charles Mingus also played piano, was a composer and directed big band and orchestra compositions. A favorite recording is a 1963 album Mingus Plays Piano which is Mingus alone on piano. ✌

Chris Hillman is great. In his autobiography he discloses that he said he could play bass to get into the Byrds and learned on the fly! He played bluegrass before that, so he played mandolin before bass. In any case, he is extraordinary. His work in so many amazing bands, such as Manassas, and on his own, demonstrates his versatility and skills.
