@@TriAngulumAudioStudios It took me awhile to accept the D but I've come not only accept but respect the class and its place in Star Trek history.
@terran66863 жыл бұрын
I still hate it, but in the good sort of way. It's a sign of change to go from the D to the E and the other DS9 era ships. Star Trek was there at the start of Sci Fi in mainstream TV. Over the decades, things changed. Sci Fi grew up, ship designs became more angular, straighter, and less naive. Today, hard sci fi is in vogue with The Expanse. Star Trek is about as far as you can get from modern sci fi. But, maybe that's not a bad thing. Trek has always evolved with the times. There's been highs and lows, and there are confusing times ahead. Trek should keep going, keep breaking ice for more shows, more media, hard and soft sci fi to find room to grow. We shouldn't be afraid to embrace our silly saucers and spindly nacelles. The D looks diabolical to me, but that's good. Because it's so far removed from what I consider sensible that anything becomes possible. Then again, I find the Mirandas to be nicer looking than the Constitutions. So maybe I'm just insane.

@@TriAngulumAudioStudios thanks. I'm interested to see what Starfleet learned from the Galaxies that were either severely damaged or lost.
@thewiirocks3 жыл бұрын
My guess on the purpose of the third nacelle is to add asymmetry to the warp field, allowing greater maneuverability at warp speeds. Extremely important for the Galaxy Class ship as her powerful engines were designed for cruising more than combat. Fast maneuvers were not the Galaxy’s forte, something which the original designers didn’t see as a big issue, preferring to line the hull with strips of phaser arrays thereby nullifying the maneuverability disadvantage. The problem with the Dreadnaught class is the addition of the Phaser Lance. Integrating it into the hull limited off-bore shots, requiring that maneuverability be increased to ensure that the Galaxy could hit its targets. Thus the ungainly third nacelle that actually drops the efficiency of the warp engines in favor of rapid deformation of the warp bubble. i.e. She’s a ship that can turn and burn! At warp speed, no less!

If the Galaxy Class was a sign of Starfleet hubris, then what did member worlds think of the larger Romulan Warbird D'deridex class?
@garycleveland6410 Жыл бұрын
A great question.
@0utc4st1985 Жыл бұрын
I think the difference is the D'deridex was an effective warship. The hubris on Starfleet's part wasn't in building a big ship, it's the belief that the need for having powerful warships to protect yourself had passed and we can have this golden age of exploration from here on out. The Galaxy was the size of battleship types of classes but it wasn't nearly as powerful as it could have been. It's understandable in the context of the time, the Klingons were allies which bottled up the Romulans. The Cardassians were a mere nuisance. The Dominion and Borg hadn't been discovered. They had no real enemy when it was being designed.

To me; part of the design ideology for a long-range exploratory vehicle like the Galaxy class, was an attempt at a possible generational capital ship that can work for a LONG time without docking back at a starbase for repairs/refits, and resupplies. Until the Borg happened, pioneering exploration was at an all-time high in Starfleet. The alternate future Enterprise J was basically a super-sized version of the Galaxy Class "ideology" - it literally had a university or two inside it - I wouldn't even be surprised if it HAD a branch of Starfleet Academy within it as well in case some of the kids within wanted to sign up for a career in Starfleet.

When we look at advances in starfleet ship design..Such as once powerful designs of their time like the excelsior and Miranda classes lasting well past original projections as a generic workhorse ship…I like to think that even with the various designs seen after the bog attack etc, that the galaxy class itself would live on as a general workhorse ship for centuries as well, the luxury aspect suiting well for transport of dignitaries, the immense interior space being viable for some refit as super carriers of cargo, or refit for massive bunk style cabins for colony establishment efforts and support… Especially in the aftermath of the dominion war, the notion of a galaxy class going to a designated garden world to found a colony, running skeleton crew with refit interiors could conceivably carry all the materiel and personnel to get the colony going, something we already see in the second appearance of the crystalline entity, but to a less focused version of that task. I look forward to the video in this series about project galaxy that covers the nebula class as well (unless I just missed it or was previously covered outside of this sub series)

🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well executed and informatively explained in every detail way shape and form possibly provided on all subjects of the Galaxy class starship's indeed, But my problem with the Class was how the saucer section primary hull dwarfed the secondary hull and the nacelles, Also for a ship that should have to go into battle having families and children on board isn't a very logical or very wise idea what so ever by putting them in jeopardy of getting killed or injured, I always found that to be a stupid premise by Starfleet for allowing that to be ok with in any way shape or form indeed!. Any ways I myself have a few of the Galaxy class models myself by Eaglemoss and various others as well by other companies and some model kits of it and various DVDs of the TNG TV show and all the movies as well...

I really like the look of the Galaxy Class and the Enterprise D, but it was mainly a luxury boat that became outdated rather quickly. When you see how much empty space there is in the ship, it makes you wonder what Starfleet was thinking. I understand that it was made to be modular, but that much emptiness doesn't make sense to me. I think the Enterprise E and the Sovereign class being far more efficient and powerful was the right move by Starfleet and they should have kept the ideas behind that class moving forward.

Well the Enterprise D didnt really receive the refit, that was a fake future created by Q, like Sherwood Forest... The Ent D was long destroyed by that point... @Doctors_TARDIS2 жыл бұрын
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios I always felt that the saucer separation was a failed experiment as a combat tactic. It takes ages to transfer all the non-military personnel into the saucer and military personnel into the stardrive. Then you have to go through with the separation and leave the saucer behind. Because the saucer has no warp drive, it's now a sitting duck. These limitations make it impractical as a combat strategy unless you know well in advance that you are going into combat and are WAY out of sensor range of your enemy. Otherwise the enemy will just target the saucer instead. If there was a big red button that engaged emergency transporters and beamed everyone on board to where they needed to be, and then the saucer was fitted with a secondary warp drive of it's own, even if a limited one, so it had the ability to flee, it MAYBE would be a more reasonable thing to do.
