I have become quite a fan of the Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band, there is something about their performances that puts them way out ahead of any other marching band. Weather it’s the precision of the music or the wonderful synchronised choreography or the pure joy that the band shows and they are also all beautiful. Hats of to the few boys who are seen in all their performances. I understand that this is a extra voluntary activity that has at its heart a wind and brass club. And as Senior students of the school they must all be between sixteen and eighteen years of age with a yearly turnover of members as the older members move away from the school and new members come in at the start of their high school time. I love what you all do.

Hi David I am a massive fan and have been for quite a few years. Your comments are spot on in the way this school activity band works so diligently and a work ethic second to none. And that is handed down year on year to maintain the legacy which is the Orange Devil’s. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊

You nailed it. Practice before school, during school, after school, weekends and holidays. They are so a close knit group that encourages each other and have fabulous support from the Parents too.

David - it is a Senior Hight School and the students are there for 3 years. They enter at 15 and leave at 18. The older students teach the younger ones at it is amazing how the new students take part seemlessly in the Brass Expo event just 5 weeks after joining.

I haven’t previously been someone who follows Marching Bands, but I love music and have worked with young people as a School Governor for more than 40 years and even as I approach my 80th Birthday I am still involved as a Member of an School . Academy Trust here in the UK. When I first stumbled across a video of Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band on KZbin, I was blown-away by their precision and amazing choreography which seems to be so well synchronised. So often when your hear Marching Bands, there is a lag retweet musicians leading to a harmonic delay. Amazingly Tachibana SHS Band are invariably spot on, with every note being delivered as one. To me there are Marching Bands and then there is Kyoto Tachibana SHS Band - Way out in the lead.

I don’t play any instrument, I can’t read music, but I have two ears and eyes and I appreciate what you say about perfect pitch and dance. I have often said that they are in fact aliens from planet Zanussi , as no one can be that good, but eh they are and Year on Year this band just performs beyond belief. The future is bright the future is Orange 🍊

119期はマルチタムとその後ろのスネアの小柄な2人を追っかけてました。台湾の双十節でも腰に重い楽器抱え全力疾走のダブル十字。あと後に120期部長のユーフォニアム部長は長身でカッコイイ。そしてなによりもピッコロ部長が最後列から全体に気配りしている安心感。それとコロナが終息してスケジュールびっしりでみんな真っ黒でしたね。

花王の方が、見かねたのでしょうか、120期がキュレルの日焼け止めのCMに出演しましたね。あと、実質的に全体の指揮をとっていたのは、２人の後ろのバスドラの生徒さんだったような。

いつも思うが京都橘のような、斬新な学校が他に出てこないのか不思議でならない、マーチング、演奏でも優れた学校が沢山有るのだが、今一楽しくない、もう少し生徒に自主性を持たすよう学校の先生、経営者は考えたほうが良いと思う。観客は楽しさを求めて来てるのだから。

Do band members end up with foot problems? Those shoes don't look very supportive and their feet take a lot of punishment.

Apparently they did try changing footwear once but abandoned it because it left them without sufficient feel or flexibility. Japanese people do spend a lot of time in slippers, socks, or barefoot -- so maybe they're accustomed to it. One previous member of the band was born without one leg, and still did these routines on a prosthetic, which is just amazing. From what I understand she's now in college training to become a kindergarten teacher.
