And for those of you who are spending way too much time counting wrong notes: --------------------------------------------- Someone described a conversation between Clara Haskil, (a noted pianist in her own right and accompanist to Arthur Grumiaux, the violinist) and her companion on a train travelling in Europe. During the ride, the two musicians noted and discussed numerous pianists and what they thought of them. When they got to Edwin Fischer, Haskil said, “Oh, but he plays so many wrong notes! more than anyone we listen to.” As they got up to disembark the train, a gentleman stood up in front of them who turned out to be none other than Edwin Fischer who had been sitting in the next compartment unbeknownst to Haskil and her friend. He turned to them with a smile and asked if they would help him lift his large suitcase from the upper luggage rack, saying "It's very heavy because it contains all of my wrong notes!” ----------------------------------------------- Every pianist, even the greatest of all, played wrong notes. Listen to the performances and stop obsessing about that that which makes them human. How do their performances touch you, make you feel, move you?

Not all wrong notes are created equal. The problem with mistakes made in the execution of a chord is the production of dissonance that destroys the musical moment. I am sympathetic to the pressure that these young performers are under, but I will say that I am seeing far more frequent errors than in the Cliburn Preliminary Round from several years ago. I will be curious so see if this is true again in March.

William Yang, Thank you for the refreshing performance of the 2nd Ballade. An "interpretation" in the best sense of the word. Angie Zhang, Great to see someone in the preliminary round dare to approach 'La Ballade,' as Horowitz called it. A fitting Coda to conclude.

Natasha's Ballade in F major was phenomenal. You cannot beat that for virtuosity, sensitivity and originality. The best I have heard so far. I believe she will go to the next stage.

Let's hope 1:11:31 is like boom we are in the second stage multiple minor mistouches notwithstanding. Inspired, fiery, super detailed display: like that line 1:20:11 LH responding to the RH, a beautiful gem, or the phantom melody here 1:25:22. Only a few people can bring out such a spontaneous feel in their playing in Miami.

Hey Ben (and anyone else who may be qualified to comment): I've been watching since yesterday. I keep going to you between the contestants, hoping for the answer, finally, to why there are limits set in the choices that the pianists may make for their performances. I don't know how many more performances of the 3rd Ballade I can listen to before I jump off the roof of my house (nearly all pale in comparison to the versions we know from recordings and videos of the top pianists throughout the years) . And why only allowing them to choose 3 from the 25 available waltzes? Are these repertoire choice limits common for all competitions? Who makes the decisions on which pieces contestants may choose to play; why not just leave decisions open, based on category?

It's because of 1) difficulty - they have to be hard enough for a competition like this, and 2) length - each program has to be about 30 minutes.

The fact that many people chose the 3rd Ballade and no one chose the Fantasy is just down to luck. In a perfect world the choices would be more balanced.
