You might know that shortly after the war started, Federal Cavalry troops were ordered not to sharpen their sabers. There had been too many injuries to troopers and especially to horses with cut ears and flanks from saber drills with a sharpened saber. This is why Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest sent a letter to the commanding General of the Union Cavalry thanking him for that policy. He had been surrounded by Federal cavalry Troopers who hit him repeatedly with their blunt sabers until he managed to draw his revolver and escape. The primary use of the saber on the battlefield was as a short lance. Hold the arc of the saber upwards, penetrate the enemy and as you ride on, the curvature of the saber will pull it out of the body and you continue on. That is the reason horse troopers used sabers instead of swords; the sword could not be used that way.

That's the difference between professionell european cavalry and american amateurs. At the end they were nothing more than mounted infantry skirmishing on foot. Due to modern firearms that was the future. Otherwise one can state a rather bad performance cavalrywise. Some people even blame the skirmishing on foot practice to such defeats as at Little Big Horn, which wouldn't happen that way with disciplined, professionell cavalry fighting on horseback. The horses just transported them quicker into the deadly trap. No more respect for the "long knives" by the natives. Infantry would have done better and it did.
