Those boys in blue were so rowdy, because they were humiliated that it took them 4 long years to get their enemy to surrender. An enemy who had an army, that was a fraction the size of theirs, and on paper, was inferior to them in every aspect of war. So yeah, they had every right to get rowdy and want to vent their frustrations with each other. They sure as heck didnt want any more heat from those boys in gray ever again. Even though by 1865, those southern boys were sacks of bones. So malnourished and exhausted, they looked like a strong breeze could have blown them over. Still, the boys in blue couldnt whip them. The only things those southern boys got whipped by, was hunger and disease. If by some miracle, enough nutritious food, and a gallon jug of clean water fell from the sky, for every single Confederate soldier to have a couple decent meals, and a few hours of rest, they would have jumped on those trespassing invaders again, and given them plenty more! 😂

When I was still active I carried mine on the sling, but on the back, not the chest; it immediately navigated to the hip as soon as I moved justlike yours did, but was otherwise fine. I could never find brass for my Burnside in those days so carried a Sharps and paper cartridges which did not have a problem falling out. One important point though, is the size of the box makes it difficult to fit on the belt along with the pistol box etc. I could just about manage it but some of the slimmer waisted guys in my Troop had no chance!

I'm sorry, your horse is not just a possession, and shouldn't be treated as such. How about you should take care of your horse because it's a living, breathing being that is relying on you? It's better for someone to use the best of what they have than "authentically" half-ass it with something that just kind of works and hurts the horse. Also, I hate to tell y'all, but a lot of the meat rations issued during the war were fresh rations that had to be cooked right away. So if you really want an authentic experience, buy fresh meat, cook it all on the first day, eat as much as you can right away, and carry the rest with you over the weekend. If you're only ever using cured or preserved meat then you're not really getting a full authentic experience.

An enlistment is an honorable deal between a would be soldier and the military. I agree to be a soldier for X amount of time. During that time I will honor your regs and customs. At the end of that time you will release me. That's how it should work. Keeping anyone longer than agreed, violates that honorable agreement.
