J needs to lay eggs that are fertile and will hatch in 38 or 39 days. My view is they need a Pass from Nature to relieve yrs of "bad luck" and another helping hand from Above and provide a counterbalance to their heretofore best efforts in producing Young hatched Chicks.

How is one to tell them apart?
@FOBBVCAM21 күн бұрын
Hi there! Jackie is noticeably larger than Shadow, in fact female bald eagles are 25% to 33% larger than the males. Jackie’s beak is also longer and thicker from top to bottom. It’s easier to learn how to tell them apart if you start when they are side by side. This video may help you tell them apart in other ways kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIOZfqeBrt6VhNU

Sadly they will wait for bad weather to lay eggs.
@FOBBVCAM15 күн бұрын
When Jackie's time comes to lay eggs, it won't matter if there is snow on the nest bowl. She has successfully laid eggs in the snow in the past. I know it is natural for us to want there not to be snow on the nest, but the eagles have used this nest for many years, and the weather in Big Bear during her nesting season often calls for snow and freezing temperatures. We have to trust the eagles and their instincts. Also, adult eagles develop a brood patch as it nears egg-laying and incubation time. It is a patch of bare skin low on an eagle's abdomen. Eagles can roll, wiggle, and tuck their eggs up against the brood patch, effectively transferring heat from the eagle's roughly 105-degree body to the eggs. When Jackie and Shadow incubate in inclement or severe weather they stay very still to conserve energy and will remain very still for long periods of time, occasionally shaking off the snow and changing position. Eagles are built for cold temperatures and are quite comfortable in snow. The most prolific eagles are located in Alaska and Canada, where the average winter temperatures drop far below those experienced in Big Bear. Bald Eagles have over 7,000 feathers and ~105F core body temperature. Their feathers zip together over fluffy down feathers, shedding water and keeping the heat in. In fact, snow is an amazing insulation material. It limits heat exchange, stabilizes temperature and even muffles the sound. The lack of movement is consistent with their previous behavior when incubating in snow. Jackie laid eggs in snow in 2018 and 2019 so she’s experienced at this. If there is snow in the egg cup during the egg-laying process, it usually melts quickly with the onset of incubation. Eggs do not need to be incubated or warmed up right away. They can be stored for long periods of time at around 50F. Embryonic development inside the egg begins at above 70F (physiological zero). Jackie might prefer the nest without snow but when it's time, it's time. Her instincts will guide her. Nature is amazing!
