12/5/1970 Bruins at Canadiens complete game broadcast Bobby Orr

This video is a complete game broadcast of the Dec. 5, 1970 National Hockey League contest between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens at the Forum (for score, see summary below).
It originally aired on the CBC on Hockey Night In Canada. Like most video from this era it's B+W and a little washed out, but overall getting to see this game is a treat; the greatness of Bobby Orr and the Big, Bad Bruins shines through.
It's long, as I left in the commercials and between-periods stuff because there was a lot going on in the NHL right at that time. First of all, the Stanley Cup had just been stolen from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto! The Canadiens had just fired Claude Ruel and hired Al MacNeil. The Alouettes had just won the Grey Cup. Orr was a between-periods guest and talked about having just released "Orr On Ice". And Harry Sinden, who'd coached the Bruins in 1969-70 but left to go into private business, was doing some analysis. Whew!
The game was just as action-packed, as it was the defending champion Bruins' first appearance in Montreal that season. Boston easily had handled the Canadiens in their first meeting at the Garden, 6-1, in a fight/penalty-filled affair, and excitement was high for this one. The teams delivered, with Orr his usual brilliant self.
A few months later a young goalie you might remember by the name of Ken Dryden helped Montreal send Boston packing in the first round of the 1971 playoffs, and Les Habitants went on to win the Cup. Aaaaiiiieeee!!!! Anyway ...

Yes, we were! But unless you were a habs fan it wasn't much fun hearing them describe the Canadiens clobbering your team. Gallivan truly had one of the great voices in sports broadcasting.

I grew up in NY too and did occasionally get to hear Danny Gallivan because the NHL had a syndicated Game of the Week after they lost their NBC contract. The NHL syndicated broadcast would sometimes pick up a HNIC broadcast, so you'd see Gallivan, Howie Meeker, Brian MacFarlane, Dick Irvin & the crew. Not often, but sometimes.

1970 I was 10, I only had 1 hero, Bobby Orr, hockey is in my blood, still at 62. 🇺🇸🏒🇨🇦, Boston born, played in USA and Canada, the Canadian all-star bantams against us, every winter a Canadian family would take us in, Canadians are the best, treated us with respect and care. I lived in Northern Minnesota for a year in the early 80s and the local cable carried CBC. They'd always run these "Help Wanted" scrolling ads at 3 a.m for pretty high paying teacher and professional openings in places like Yellowknife and Inuvit right before they ran the scroll of temperatures showing -35 C in places like Yellowknife and Inuvit. As a young boy growing up in Toronto and a die hard Leaf fan, when the HNIC broadcast came on from Montreal you knew Danny Galivan and Dick Irwin were going to call the game unlike anyone else. They were the best, period. Love the honesty of the Molson ads too.

Born and bread just north of Boston it's great to find a channel that puts out videos of the teams I grew up with. I've been blessed to be a fan since 1967 til now and have witnessed many great players and many many great games this brings me back to playing street hockey in a school yard as a kid wearing the B on my shirt those were awesome days thanks for this unbelievable video many hall of farmers in this game

This season has a lot of memories attached to it...the first season for the fledgling Canucks Sabres and rookies Gil Perrault and Dale Talon. Perrault winning the Calder that year. Such a shame Perrault never won a cup. It was also the season of Esso's Power Players...my dad being a Shell man had to fill up a Esso for an entire NHL season so I could collect Power Players...what a brilliant Sales scheme. Every Canadian boy had to have a Power Player album and trade those stamps in the School Yard. My dad was relieved when a friend who owned the ESSO station in his home town gave me a whole box of packets when we there for Easter...I filled up my Super Album from that box with extra hard to get players to trade for other things in the schoolyard. One side of my family were Leafs fans and my Mother's side (French Canadian) Habs fans...but as kid I always a Blackhawks fan...still am. I really liked that Mikita Hull lead Hawks teams...and Tony O my fave Goaltender...also my (Neighbourhood Texaco Sponsored) league Tinymite team had the same Uniforms as the Hawks. Very memorable playoffs that year...Habs big comeback in Game 2 at the Garden...The Leafs Rangers brawl in MSG in game 2 where Hadfield tore off Parent's mask and threw it into the stands. Cesare Maniago's Brilliant performance at the Forum helping the North Stars Become the first 67 Expansion team to beat an Original Six team in a playoff game, they would win one more at home at the Met before bowing out in 6...Dryden Winning the Conn Smythe as a Rookie...and simply One of the best Cup Finals of all time with the Habs breaking the homer series in Game 7. Will never forget, with my Hawks up 2-0 well into the 2nd Period...and then that heartbreaking shot by Lemaire from just over the Centre line that got past Esposito...letting the Habs back into the game and eventually winning.

Great post! An interesting season, indeed! I had no idea about Power Players ... I'm gonna check 'em out! I hear ya on that Game 7. I thought the Bruins were gonna beat the Blackhawks in 2013 in Game 6, but two late goals/17 seconds and we were goners. It hurts!

The 1970-71 season I remember Montreal meeting Boston in the first playoff series. Boston was heavily favored. They were leading 5-1 going into the 3rd period of the 2nd game, then Montreal produced a miracle come back, scoring two goals with their goalie pulled. Beliveau's play had been declining during the season and many felt he was over the hill. But just then, in that third period, Beliveau found the spark of his youth, raising the level of the whole team. I think it was that victory that carried them on to win the cup that year.

The season of 1967/68 the NHL double in size to 12 teams. I had a complete hockey card collection from that season. It would be worth alot of money today. Of course my mother threw them out.

When the King of my time Bob Cole retired after 60 years, I realized how for 50 years I was privilged to hearing the best of the best.

Always nice to see The Bruins win games against Montreal, especially in Montreal! Although Boston would not win a playoff series till 1988 against Les Habitants, they did win games up at The Forum during the regular season (like this one).

After our family had settled just outside Toronto in the summer of 1970, the first game our dad ever took me and my brother to was a Rangers Maple Leaf game. If there's one thing a boy whose grown up within a world of everything hockey can never forget, it is the first time they went to Maple Leaf Gardens. I never knew exactly when that game was but I always recalled the details of it. As I watched this Montreal Boston broadcast, I was actually drawn to the intermission when they mentioned the out of town scoreboard with the Leafs and Rangers scoreless. I thought to myself...Is this it? Sure enough it was. Pete Semkowski got the only goal. I recall cherishing his hockey card all through those youthful years simply because I saw him score a goal. Don't think his card ever was worth much in any trade, but at least now I know when this date in my history took place. "Wholly Nostalgic Overload Batman!"

12 and a half years later, Bruce Hood would be part of one of the most memorable games with the Good Friday Massacre between the Canadiens and Nordiques. He retried after the playoffs.

Thank you for sharing. You don't get to see much footage of Bobby Orr. I like seeing JC Tremblay footage, as he was an underrated defenseman. Unfortunately there is no Jean Beliveau in this game, he was a big reason why the Canadiens won the Cup this season, getting past the Bruins in the playoffs. In fact Boston went 45 years without beating Montreal in the playoffs, until 1988, which is remarkable.

really cool to see these type games from my young young days (4.5 yrs old) but I was a hockey fanatic at a very young age and was a massive Bobby Orr , Espo n bruins fan at that time and in the yrs to come. I do remember the Habs with Dryden shocking the Bruins in the playoffs that yr. I even got the hockey game playing version with spinning plastic players ( i got the special version with Mtl n Boston when it was almost always Toronto v Montreal

Would love to see a replay of a game in Boston played Dec 3, 1966, against New York 2-2 tie. Orr got an assist on the first Boston goal by Bucyk. I was a 14-year-old from Canada and this was my first NHL game - what a memory.

I saved it for years and it disappeared while I was away attending college. He claims that mom threw it out, but I suspect that he has always had it in his possession. He is not a brother who liked to share anything. I do have memories and also share a BD with my hero - Orr (March 20).

How fortunate you were to have seen Orr his rookie season. I didn't get to attend a hockey game until Oct 28,1978, when I was 17. Detroit beat Chicago 7-2, at the Olympia. Bobby scored his last NHL goal that night, while Vaclav Nedomansky tallied a hattrick for the Wings.

Saw Gretzky in his first game as an Oiler and probably another dozen or so times before I moved to Calgary. All in all, I saw both Orr and Gretzky in their first years - very lucky.

Wonderful to see these historic games, which I watched when I was a young teenager back in the '60s and '70s. That was fantastic competitive hockey, with all those great legendary players who were just as exciting for the fans as the game is today. These videos are now historic and should be digitally colorized, speed-corrected, and digitally enhanced to a very high level so today's hockey fans can see them properly.

The Habs had better commentators in English and French. No doddering old Hewitt proclaiming the Leafs much better than their record or playoff failure indicated. Going to a Habs game we'd go EARLY and hope to see the media almost as much as the players. If you asked a question that made an adult stop and think before answering everyone knew about it the next day. One of the greatest pleasures of life has been getting to chat informally with Mr Irvin about the game. I told him id been one of the kids who used to shout questions in both languages and how much his attention and knowledge had meant to us. He never talked down to us. When Mr. Irvin moves on we will have lost the final touchstone to a special time in Montreal.

wow when this broadcast aired i just come into this world 2months and five days earlier.. in fact with my late dad being a Habs FANATIC fan this was likely playing in the background as i was sleeping or being fed ..amazing how other color tv the intro and presentation would not drastically change up to the time when i was old enough to understand and follow the games ..in the early 80's also choosing my fav team the Edmonton Oilers in 83 (much to my late dad's displeasure..who gave me the middle name Marc after then Canadians player Marc Tardif) however the nurse (or whoever) typed it "Mark" on the birth records like say Mark Messier..no doubt pissing of the old man even more lol

Re The Game of the Week; Habs and Blues. These highlights really drive home the fact that the "Camelot" years of the Blues first three seasons were over. It was the end of an era in STL. By season's end, or at least before the following season began, four of the heroes of the Blues' "origin story" would be gone. Bowman, Hall, Berenson, and Picard. When you watch the highlights here, it is obvious that the Blues were treading water, and their early glory days were over. Much of the upheaval involved the four Origin Story heroes mentioned above. 1) Scotty Bowman. New upper level management was challenging Bowman's authority. Scotty had every intention of rebuilding the aging Blues team into a contender in the 1970s, but wanted complete control of the makeover process. Blues new management forced Bowman out of STL, and the rest was history for Scotty. I would like to add that Bowman made a few surprising personnel errors himself. Letting veterans Jacques Plante go to Toronto, and Phil Goyette to Buffalo was baffling. I was also disappointed when he allowed Vancouver to draft Wayne Maki. Many of us STL fans, very emotionally, wanted Maki to make a comeback after the awful incident with Ted Green, which he did in Vancouver. And most of the young players that Bowman did "rebuild" the team with, underperformed: Bordeleau, Lorentz, Selby. A desperate Bowman picked up veteran Bill Sutherland, and brought minor league star Fran Huck up, but to no avail. 2) Glenn Hall. One of my very favorite players I will confess. But Hall played two years too long, and this, his final season, was hard to watch. He was wildly inconsistent, and let in quite a few bad goals. He had a handful of brilliant games, but for the first time that I remember in his four STL seasons, he was knocked out of several games. Hall finished with a fine GAA, but the Blues had a tough defense in front of him, and as usual, Scotty had the forwards checking quite diligently. In the playoffs vs, MN, Hall lost all three of his starts; a sad way to end his career. We missed Plante, but there may have been tension between Jake and Scotty. 3) Noel Picard. At one time, one of the most feared policemen in the league. However, Picard injured his leg, quite seriously, in an off season horseback riding accident the year before. He was never the same. Noel was never known for speed, but he had a certain graceful agility, both as a defenseman and an enforcer. While he did assist on Crisp's goal, you may also notice that he was caught flat-footed on most of the Habs goals. And I cannot remember him winning a fight his final two years in STL. Watch the highlights of game Game 1 in the Cup final vs Boston the previous season. It took Wayne Cashman about 5 seconds to punch Picard to the ice. 4) Red Berenson. I was not surprised to notice that Red did not figure in any of the Blues goals that night. Berenson was always a streak player, prone to slumps, but after a fast start in 70-71, he really cooled off. By 2/3 of the way thru the season he had only 16 goals. (He would finish with 21). Bowman made a brilliant move trading the 31 year old Berenson for 24 year old Garry Unger. Unger scored for 42 goals for the Detroit the year before(Berenson had 33 and over 40 assists), but the idiot, Ned Harkness didn't like Unger's long hair. The Berenson deal was Scotty's last hurrah in STL. So, that was so interesting watching a great example of the end of the expansion era in STL. The Black Hawks had arrived in the West Division and were on their way to the Cup finals representing the division. What I wrote above was not to cast aspersion on Bowman, Hall, Picard, or Berenson. It was a moment in time of great changes for a once dominant expansion team now in flux.

Wow! Great analysis! I had somebody comment that Picard won that fight with Cashman ... yeah, right (he mighta been trolling)! Often a problem when ownership gets too involved, but I guess Scotty didn't have his future great record to cite. That *was* a great trade for Unger! My fondness for Glenn Hall stems from whenever he saw Bobby Orr, he would say, "You'd think that was the only goal you ever scored!" or something along those lines. 🤣 A lot of the great pro goalies, Hall, Plante, Sawchuk, the Gumper, I only saw at the end of their careers and it was kinda like that ... it was either a throwback to the good old days, or they were driven from the nets, not much in between.

A quick funny story: The first game I ever went to, Picard broke Pete Mahovlich's leg in a fight which became a wrestling match! Pete was carried off on a stretcher. The Wings beat the Blues 6-3; Howe scored a hat trick off of Seth Martin, Hall's backup.

@@petegoodwinboston4825 Pete and Noel were possibly the two biggest guys in the league at the time. Pete was 6' 5"; Picard 6' 4", but probably outweighed Pete. Doug Roberts with Oakland was also 6' 5", and had played college football, but really wasn't known as an enforcer to my knowledge. Picard fell on Pete's leg(ouch!), and that's how the break occurred! I only remember one of Howe's goals. Not pretty, just a quick wrist shot after a pileup...vintage Howe!

Montreal had California Seals 1st round pick in the upcoming draft. When it looked like the Seals would finish ahead of the Kings in the standings, it was time for Sam Pollock to make a move. He traded Backstrom to the Kings. That helped the Kings get out of the basement and the Seals finished last. That gave the Habs first pick in the draft, which of course was Guy Lafleur. The genius of Sam Pollock. The night before the draft he tried to trade 3 players to Detroit for the 2nd, which was Marcel Dionne. He didn't get that deal done. If he had made that deal, they may have won every cup from 70-71 to 78-79. instead they only won 6 of them.

Most of the expansion teams were forced to cough up top draft choices to fill their rosters with aging veterans and 4th line players. It was a disgrace. Notice most of the action is in the center of the ice. Skating and stick handling. A rule change in the 1980's eliminated players freezing the puck along the boards creating the boring cycling of the puck we see today. Chop Chop Chop. Keep the clock moving. The game might appear faster today but it really is not. This was very entertaining. Thank you very much.

On the other hand, there was no "stretch pass" because of the silly line at centre ice. Blown down for a "two line pass". Yes, you could get a whistle just by putting it on the boards, and just by rifling it into the crowd as well, a penalty which a lot of people don't like, but I don't like the alternative either. As for the frequent whistles, in those days they didn't have two-minute commercial breaks, nor any time-outs, nor overtime. In other words, less pressure to keep the clock ticking. It's hard to compare the eras. For example, you couldn't very well block shots because the equipment wasn't as protective. And, nowadays, it's not possible to be a slow skater in the NHL, even if you're a defensive defenceman. One thing that makes these old broadcasts so nice is that there was no music blaring during breaks in the action. You just hear the crowd and the commentary, so your nervous system isn't being put under constant strain. In fact, that goes for the whole of society -- calmer, more reflective, not addicted to constant stimulation.

Another great upload Pete. So I just saw Phil Esposito score the Bruins third goal on the power-play. The Canadian PA announcer says Boston goal Phil Esposito from John McKenzie and Don Marcotte. It’s clear they do not want Bobby Orr to have any success. Marcotte was not on the ice. He didn’t get power play time until the late 70s. Lol They were so jealous of Bobby Orr. I wonder if that was ever corrected because Bobby Orr would’ve had 140 points that season.

It was so petty ... they're hockey meccas and they're booing the greatest player who ever lived. I hadn't noticed that on that goal, but my guess is it wasn't changed. Bobby Orr was known, especially late in his career, for telling the official scorer another player tipped his shot when he probably hadn't. Class act!

I was born in brantford ontario and I lived 6 doors down from Wayne Gretzky at 8 years old. Never new what hockey was. But i remember being told we had to go home so Wayne could practice with his dad. Only then did i learn about hockey. Hockey night in Canada on Saturday night was something all our young dads came together as me and my friends did later on. Thanks for this video. Brings back great memories

I knew that Molson owned the Habs, but didn't realise that they had every single commercial! I was ten years old when this was aired, but in British Columbia, it was illegal to broadcast ads for alcohol of any kind, so we got a lot of local stuff and Ford. In those days, Canadians drank almost exclusively Canadian beer, so the three big breweries practically had a monopoly. It was only available in each province's government-owned liquor stores, and I think they simply favoured the Canadian manufacturers. American beer didn't enter the Canadian market until the late 80s, early 90s, I seem to recall.

You could see the marks on the necks where they'd gone through washing machines over and over. There was a deposit, and the fact that they were interchangeable made it easy to collect and return. This went out the window when they opened up the market. An environmentally friendly policy generations ahead of its time, but reflecting upon it, I guess it was also a consequence of the monopoly -- by agreeing on a uniform bottle for re-use, the breweries probably saved money.

I echo the rest, this is a great nostalgic post! A few thoughts - Bruins use just 10 forwards, which probably explains Phil Esposito's 90 second shifts, including a long one in the second period where he finally comes off, Habs take a penalty seconds later, and he's right back on scoring the power-play goal. Also, pretty average game for Mr. Orr. Picked up an assist but was on for both Montreal goals. Can't be an uber-player all the time, I guess. EJ deserves 1st star honors. He was stellar. And, I'm no Habs fan, but how is JC Tremblay not in the Hockey Hall of Fame? Thanks for sharing this game!

Get Cheevers in the game while you still have a chance and maybe the result is different. Having said that, the Bruin goaltending the whole series was bad. EJ redeemed himself in '72.

There was also a feeling in Montreal that Cheevers saved the B's in a game 1 in which the canadiens had numerous grade A chances and the bruins only winning 3-1, Yeah i was talking to a guy who attended game 7 and he felt that that was the only game that Dryden really stole but it shouldn't have reached that point.

Agree. One of the best games I've ever seen. I believe Sinden was quoted after the game as saying, "well, the fans got their money's worth tonight!". Hundreds of scoring chances, Esposito and Cheevers were flawless, the puck would simply not go in. There's a late interview with Phil and Tony and they mention this game.

@@GuyCybershy The game you are referring to was played on Saturday, Dec. 21 1968 So there could be HNIC video, which would be fantastic. Tony O stopped 41 shots, Cheevers 34. I've heard Phil talk about the game played on Thurs.Dec. 5 1968 in Boston, a 2-2 tie (Tony's 2nd NHL game but his 1st start), Phil scored both Bruins' goals. Then on Wed. March 11 1970, the Bruins and Blackhawks played to a 0-0 tie in Chicago. Tony with 24 saves, Ed Johnston 32 for Boston. Back in those days playing the Habs was a nightmare. First of all playing against all those legends was hard enough but then you had to put up with the refs giving them the first 5 power plays where the Habs would score 4. When the game was out of reach the refs would even up the penalties so the stat sheet would look like it was evenly called. BUT… if you were fortunate enough to still be beating the Habs late in the game you could be sure the Habs would be getting pp after pp. Back then the Habs were the face of the NHL. As Cherry wants said… what’s good for the Habs is good for hockey.

most of the original tapes of games in that era don't exist because they were taped over. for example the full game 4 of bruins -blues 1970 doesn't exist except OT. the tapes were very expensive and the feeling was no one would be interested in the future

Gallivan was absolutely the best. I was lucky as a kid in Detroit that I was able to hear him regularly on NHIC. I don’t think any of the broadcasters today can compare. There’s not enough excitement in their voice when scoring chances are about to happen. With the old time guys you knew when a chance was coming just by the elevation in the commentary.

Now, they scream like idiots AFTER a goal has been scored. Which is an insult to our intelligence because we've just seen it, thank you very much. It sounds so fake. The difference is that Gallivan had an ear, a sense of timing and nuance. What distinguished him was the way that he ran the words and sentences together, which is the reason that you could notice the change in pitch. There was such elegance in his voice that it was almost like opera.

As a child then, it always struck me as a bizarre decision in having Vancouver in the East. But I now suspect that part of the reason was due to "backroom" agreements prompted by the Blackhawks (Wirtz) . To approve expansion (Canucks & Sabers) the Hawks wanted to go to West division to have a better chance to go deeper in the playoffs (more $) - against the weaker 1967 expansion teams. At the time (1970) I remember one TV commentator tried to joke about Vancouver's situation by saying: I guess if someone keeps going farther and farther West, it is logical that he'll end up in the East!
