The greatest break I’ve ever seen was against my best friend nearly 30 years ago at our local pool hall. In a game of 8 ball, he sunk 6 stripes and 1 solid on the break. The cue was hooked behind a cluster and his only real shot was on the one ball. He missed. The only stripe was a duck in the side pocket and the eight was wide open. I won that game with only two shots. The owner of the place, who was a hell of a player and had trophies all along the wall behind the counter, said that that was the shortest game of 8 ball (outside of the 8 on the break) he’d ever seen in 50 years of pool. I still make fun of my friend to this day about that.

My cousin Freddy got eight on the break, never seen anything like it. He scratched so it didn't count, but it is something I'll never forget. We were out of quarters so we finished the game anyways, we just skipped the eight ball. And this other time my cousin Betty dropped 10 on the break, we were playing 8 ball though. Shaw finished the rack in 25 seconds. And there’s also a 7 balls in break in 9 ball pool.

I hate to say it, but smashing the break crazy hard and getting more balls down right away is rarely any more helpful than just any decent break off. You could pocket 7 balls off the break and still just leave the last 2 glued to a cushion in an awkward spot, and then you're in fact just giving your opponent the advantage. Breaking extra hard is massively overrated, just because of how aggressive and dynamic and fun to watch it is. In reality, for actually winning competitions and winning consistently, just focus on your pattern recognition, potting and cue ball control ability.
