CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Juror 8 (Henry Fonda) does a re-enactment of the old man's story which leads to a showdown with Juror 3 (Lee J. Cobb) and a dramatic revelation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A Puerto Rican youth is on trial for murder, accused of knifing his father to death. The twelve jurors retire to the jury room, having been admonished that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Eleven of the jurors vote for conviction, each for reasons of his own. The sole holdout is Juror #8, played by Henry Fonda. As Fonda persuades the weary jurors to re-examine the evidence, we learn the backstory of each man. Juror #3 (Lee J. Cobb), a bullying self-made man, has estranged himself from his own son. Juror #7 (Jack Warden) has an ingrained mistrust of foreigners; so, to a lesser extent, does Juror #6 (Edward Binns). Jurors #10 (Ed Begley) and #11 (George Voskovec), so certain of the infallibility of the Law, assume that if the boy was arrested, he must be guilty. Juror #4 (E.G. Marshall) is an advocate of dispassionate deductive reasoning. Juror #5 (Jack Klugman), like the defendant a product of "the streets," hopes that his guilty vote will distance himself from his past. Juror #12 (Robert Webber), an advertising man, doesn't understand anything that he can't package and market. And Jurors #1 (Martin Balsam), #2 (John Fiedler) and #9 (Joseph Sweeney), anxious not to make waves, "go with the flow." The excruciatingly hot day drags into an even hotter night; still, Fonda chips away at the guilty verdict, insisting that his fellow jurors bear in mind those words "reasonable doubt." A pet project of Henry Fonda's, Twelve Angry Men was his only foray into film production; the actor's partner in this venture was Reginald Rose, who wrote the 1954 television play on which the film was based. Carried over from the TV version was director Sidney Lumet, here making his feature-film debut. A flop when it first came out (surprisingly, since it cost almost nothing to make), Twelve Angry Men holds up beautifully when seen today. It was remade for television in 1997 by director William Friedkin with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott.

“You don’t really mean you’ll kill me do you?” God that line is just utterly fantastic. Up until then Juror 3 has been loosely going by the testimonies made by the “witnesses”, even though he really only wants to see the boy die because of his cold-hearted nature. One of the testimonies Juror 3 reluctantly reiterated was the fact that the old man heard the boy say “i’ll kill you” and referred to it as stone cold evidence. But after this fit of rage, Juror 8 debunks his entire agenda with one sentence, and Juror 3 pauses, before dropping his head in defeat. This was then followed up by a shot (that unfortunately was cut from the video) of the other 10 men surrounding Juror 8 while Juror 3 stands alone, defeated and his own bubble of delusion and denial, while the other 11 stand together against him. Such a symbolic shot, and of course, one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema.

Sort of the point of the film lol; they're a jury in a criminal trial. There's a reason that "reasonable doubt" is mentioned so much. Unless you're over 95% confident, you can't call reasonable doubt. Juror 4 could've still been 80% sure the kid was guilty; but that's not beyond reasonable doubt. The jurors job is to determine whether they think the evidence is enough to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If the answer is no; that's the prosecutions fault, not the jurors. Whether the kid is guilty or innocent isn't the point; the point was by the end, none of them were certain enough to claim reasonable guilt.
@shydreameress264
@shydreameress264 3 ай бұрын
It's what makes it interesting. This movie isn't saying the boy was innocent. It says that if a reasonable doubt exists, then the accused should be seen as innocent. There are so many stories out there of people who got executed and we later discovered they were innocent. A person's life is always important, no matter who they are, and deciding whether they live or die should never be taken lightly. I would never like to be part of a jury for a murder case, the responsibility of it must be unbearable. Or should be at least.

Much more telling of the type of character Juror 8 is, when we first meet him, he’s looking out the window as everyone’s getting settled; that alone shows us how contemplative and reflective he is.

Probably because old very large houses were often turned into apartments. Made for some very unique room positioning. Cheaper to convert to apartments, than to tear down and build anew.
