This video '12 bit vs 8 bit Pico vs Siglent - Micsig - GW Instek Oscilloscopes' will show what 8 bit vs 12 bit vertical resolution will do for you. I'll use a 1Vrms signal with a smaller 10mV signal riding on top. Also, it will show how much easier the software for the Pico Oscilloscope makes it to zoom into and examine a waveform.

Great review. Really like the Pico the best. Really like the ability to hook it up to 32 inch monitor and see everything super clear.

Pico scope is my favourite out of them, ease of use is the main factor that attracted me. Thank you for doing the great video. FFT is the main tool for a power electronics engineer I guess!. waiting for FFT comparison, thanks.

12bit, 14bit, 16bit. It is like windows, there is 32bit or 64. I can't imagine how clear it might, when we get up to that value and time. I might have to wait for that and make my first and last scope ever! 😄 this channel is really helpful, just like the eevlog and jat. A real engineers not just on paper.

Thanks so much! Yes, the 8 bit scopes have been around so long. It is nice to see 12 bit scopes becoming more affordable. I really like the Picoscopes because the firmware is always getting updated.

I bought the tablet style (OWON TAO3104A). It's similar to a micsig, but it's 14 bit. Hands down the best value out there for six hundred dollens. There's literally only one video about it on youtube. People are sleeping on this one

Wow that is a fantastic price! I see it has a 10% discount, but it is close to $750 which is still a great deal on a 14 bit scope: amzn.to/461In8Z

This is exactly the reason I bought the Owon XDS3102A, because it has 12 bit vertical resolution (I mostly do audio work). 8 bit is fine if you mostly do digital stuff, but for audio, you want better resolution.

To see the resolution difference between 12 and 8 bits the oscilloskope should be in Stop mode. Than you can enlarge the signal and you will see the steps and not the 100 kHz sinewave.

I tried this on my Rigol MSO5074, and the image was pretty clear! Much better than any of the other scopes demonstrated! No problem measuring exactly the 100kHz signal at 10mV. So I'm sticking with my sub-$1K, 8 bit AD scope!

Thanks James! I used to have a Tek2465B that I really liked, but I ended up getting rid of it when the deep memory digital scopes became affordable. I always like to save a waveform, so I'd move from the CRT to a digital to store, then I just ended up staying with the digital;)

Hi Eddie, wondering what sort of settings you use on the function generator to get 1khz sine with 100khz on top? I want to replicate that with my Siglent function generator if possible.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! You can try setting the gen output to 1 kHz sine at 1 Vrms, then set the modulation to AM at 100 kHz with 1% depth for the 1 mVrms. Let me know how it goes. Which Scope do you have?
@blurpy1
@blurpy1 3 жыл бұрын
That worked perfectly. Thank you! I tried the wave combine feature first, and it looked similar but not quite the same. The modulation seems to focus on the spikes, so I see the 100khz signal on the top and bottom of the sine wave, while the wave combine affected the whole sine wave equally, making it look more distorted than in your video. I have the Siglent SDS1204X-E. I can see the 1% modulation fine on the sine wave, but not 0.1%. I was actually able to consistently see 0.1% on the FFT, though it's very close to the noise floor, so if I wasn't looking for it, I would have thought it was just some random noise.
@KissAnalog

Great feedback - thanks! Did you want me to show how I set it up? Maybe I should make a video and try to do it on two different generators?
@blurpy1
@blurpy1 3 жыл бұрын
I think that would be really nice! Also, I notice you often use differential probes in your measurements on amplifier circuits. I watched your video on oscilloscope safety, which was really good. Something I would find very useful is if you could also show and talk about safety in actual situations, like when you do measurements in your projects. How to find out if it's safe to probe the output of an amplifier with a regular probe vs when to use a differential probe and so on. Maybe you already have good videos on the topic that I missed though.

It's really strange--- as you wave your finger in front of the waveform on the screen--- it appears in my mind like your finger is somehow going BEHIND the waveform. lol... It's like an optical illusion.. My brain is completing the waveform and making it look like it's in front of your finger somehow--- when it's obviously not. trippy

a 100 mV range / 256 bits = ~0.39 mV per bit (--not 3.9 mV/bit--)--although, with 10 divisions, it would be 3.9mV/div a 100 mV range / 4096 bits = ~0.0244 mV per bit (--not .22 mV/bit--)--although, with 10 divisions, it would be .244mV/div Not too impressed by the PicoScope, tbh--especially at that price. I'd order the scopes by preference as follows: MicSig GW Instek PicoScope Siglent Thanks for sharing!
