Here is a list of 12 classic books that I will definitely read in 2022.
Every year I create a list of 12 books that I commit to read (a book per month). These classic novels include 4, 20th century modern classics. There are 4 classic books from the latter end of 19th century literature and 4 classic books from earlier in the Victorian literature period.
The authors of these works of classic literature come from France, England, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Russia and Columbia.
If you want to follow along with some of the books that I read in 2022 then get yourself some of these and I will tell you in upcoming videos in which month I will be reading each of these.

You have such a good list! I will definitely read more books by Charles Dickens next year! I hope I can also read George Elliot, and I will perhaps start with The Mill on the Floss or Adam Bede. I also want to finish the book The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope which I was really enjoying, but in the meantime I stopped and I'm not sure why. I would love that you could do in-depth reviews on some of these books, I would love to hear your comments. By the way, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a great new year!

"Dom Casmurro" is great. It is very different from "Epitaph of a Small Winner" in some key aspects, though. I hope you love it. On Machado, I've heard they recently compiled and translated a volume with some of his short stories to English. You might want to check those out. I'm pretty sure that volume includes "The Alienist", which is a surprisingly prescient novella/short story on mental health and hypocrisy. You might want to take a look, because his short stories tend to work quite well.

The Brothers Karamazov was one of my favorite books of 2020 and I'm hoping to get to it again in 2022. Dostoevsky has become a favorite for me the last few years. I just read Resurrection and it was very thought provoking and heartbreaking in a lot of ways. Looking forward to your thoughts on these when you get to them! Also, I avoid Hardy after reading Tess for a class - his stuff depresses me so much.

Ooo I'm looking forwards to Resurrection and Karamazov even more. Y favourite book this year was Crime and Punishment. As for Hardy, I totally understand. He is painful. Although you will be alright with Far from the Madding Crowd. The Mayor of Casterbridge is very sad but I'm not sure I'd call it depressing. However on the whole Harfy is about suffering and woe. Tess is heartbreaking 💔 Jude the Obscure is, unbelievably, even worse if I recall.🤣

Checked the shelves in Volume ll of a 3 volume set of Balzac published in New York in 1893 is Pere Goriot. If I ever read it, I don't remember, but I do remember in high school French, we used Balzac as a swear word. If the assignment particulary heinous, it would be Honore de Balzac. I'll read it when you get to it. I too love Mill On The Floss. Read The Brothers Karamozov, read it after Crime and Punishment, which I really got into and it was a fast read, the Brothers, not so fast. Read Jude the Obscure, but placed Two On a Tower by Hardy on the Kindle, the price was right, free. I plan to read that one in 2022. Don't remember Resurrection, but read a small volume titled The Cossacks. Just placed The Resurrection on Kindle, I'm set. Loved East of Eden. A good list. Read Grapes of Wrath and finished it last week. A bit long long ! There are some rather boring chapters eg: when Tom and Al try to fix their old jallopy and have to go to a yard to find a piece they need ...old chap with one eye....then come back and describe each but and bolt of their mechanical operation ! Phew 🙄 The ending is rather prolonged too. The river swelling up...yes,dramatic but still too long. However, it is the barn scene right at the end which is really off-putting 😕 I had read Of Nice and Men and didn't like it. Now I want to read East of Eden but something tells me I might not like it either 🤔 Back to my Emma and love it 😊

I just got through reading The Brothers Karamazov. I found it disjointed, extremely melodramatic and filled with offensive nationalism and prejudice against Europeans, Catholics, Lutherans and Germans. I especially found the attitude towards Russian Orthodoxy shocking. Towards the end of the book there is even a reference to "the Russian God". A month into writing The Brothers Karamazov Dostoevsky's son died of epilepsy at age 3. Dostoevsky suffered from the same disease which came upon him the year his father died. The book is filled with existential anguish (a lot of guilt) brought about by this event. The ending scene of the book even reflects Dostoevsky's attempt to deal with his son's death. Because of the psychological turmoil going on in his life during the writing of this book, the questions he asks in The Brothers Karamazov should be viewed in light of his personal situation rather than an intellectual exploration of life's meaning. I had previously read Crime and Punishment and Notes From Underground before I started reading The Brothers Karamazov. Having finished this book just last night, I think I am safe in saying I will never read another thing by him. In light of Russia's violent past and its present outrage in Ukraine, I do not wish to read anything that extols the virtue of the Russian people.
