I saw this as a child, I always liked the scene where the woman, who is a friend to the unicorn, still cries and curses the unicorn for not showing up when she was young and beautiful and full of hope. I do not know why but even as a little boy I found that moment so human and resonant. It has always struck me how you don't see such moments in Disney films. I wondered if the Unicorn had married Lir if the children of Lir would have had magic running through their blood. And now that I'm an adult I think that would make a decent set up for a dark fantasy novel if you could work all the formative bits out.

I felt the same way as you about that scene as a child. Years later, I heard from someone who'd also read the book that he book adds context to that scene. I don't know myself. I have never read the book.

Mr Burns is voiced by Christopher Lee who also voiced the german dub, because he knew german, and his accent gave the character a very unique and stunning appearance.

Saw this one like two weeks ago. Loved it. This is definitely a movie that will make kids contemplate life more so I think this is a movie kids should see, and many adults as well. Characters die and the storytelling is mature.

Wow, just a few days ago a review of The Last Unicorn was recommended to me. This movie is good, like The Labyrinth and Dark Crystal my kids have to have their brains warped in the same way as I did so we can talk about dorky things together when they grow up. Totally child appropriate. . .

I have always appreciated the unique motivation (or perhaps more accurately, anti-motivation) of King Haggard. He is totally unable to be happy at all except in the presence of unicorns. Given that, I can’t even blame him for everything he does-I mean, what would you do if you were in that situation? Such an interesting character. I love this movie (I’ve easily seen it a hundred times) but it’s a film of mixed quality.

I remember my mother telling me that this was the very first movie she seen in the cinema. I always think about that when this film is mentioned since it's a pretty surprising film to be your first...I think my first movie was Sherk or something which certainly shows the different generations. I guess they are kind of similar though, both fairy tale stories that don't follow the expected ideas of their genre.

There seems to have been a trend of slightly seedy western animated fantasy in the early 80s. Characters that talk like bob Dylan and general demoralising tone. Like if a writers room full of orcs were asked to write an elf ballad but cannot resist expressing their contempt..
