I saw this as a child, I always liked the scene where the woman, who is a friend to the unicorn, still cries and curses the unicorn for not showing up when she was young and beautiful and full of hope. I do not know why but even as a little boy I found that moment so human and resonant. It has always struck me how you don't see such moments in Disney films. I wondered if the Unicorn had married Lir if the children of Lir would have had magic running through their blood. And now that I'm an adult I think that would make a decent set up for a dark fantasy novel if you could work all the formative bits out.

I felt the same way as you about that scene as a child. Years later, I heard from someone who'd also read the book that he book adds context to that scene. I don't know myself. I have never read the book.

I have always appreciated the unique motivation (or perhaps more accurately, anti-motivation) of King Haggard. He is totally unable to be happy at all except in the presence of unicorns. Given that, I can’t even blame him for everything he does-I mean, what would you do if you were in that situation? Such an interesting character. I love this movie (I’ve easily seen it a hundred times) but it’s a film of mixed quality.

I always think about that when this film is mentioned since it's a pretty surprising film to be your first...I think my first movie was Sherk or something which certainly shows the different generations.
