all of the riyads in this channel are absolutely stunning. my question is what is the meaning or symbolism of a central courtyard, with or without a pool in all of its structures? thanks

Riad means 'garden' in arabic. It originates from Persian palace gardens. Palaces Always are protected structures with inner courtyards. The picture of heaven/paradise in many cultures is a garden, so it symbolisera heaven. Paradise is the perfect place, therefore it was Always symetrical as well, because symetry was seen as perfection. In the old days, nobels and rich merchants lived in Riads. I assume they as well wanted a protected structure and took inspiration from the Persian palaces. In the old days only the rich had gardens so it was a status thing. The courtyard architecture gives a quiet resting place from the buisy street and it's also the main source of daylight in Riads. Hope it helped,
