At Home in Marrakesh with Meryanne Loum-Martin

Join Susanna in Marrakesh, Morocco as she visits renowned hotelier Meryanne Loum-Martin at her stunning property containing both her renowned boutique hotel Jnane Tamsna and her own residential refuge in the heart of Marrakesh’s Palmeraie district. Both places are just seamless steps from one another and resonate with Loum-Martin’s penchant for blending culture, history and design.
Born in Cote d’Ivoire, Loum-Martin worked in Paris as a lawyer before moving to Morocco in 1996. She built the property in 2001, after creating its buildings and outfitting its unique rooms with furniture and objets culled from her extensive travels. Her ethnobotanist American husband fashioned the native gardens and their bounty helps feed the many guests who seek their generous hospitality from all over the world.
The hotel’s interiors are as singularity exotic as the rooms in Loum-Martin's home, both filled with art, textiles and antiques and she and Susanna explore each. You won’t want to miss how Morocco’s only Black female hotelier determinedly brought her vision of creating a destination for world travelers and for her own family, to life.

Beautiful and serene, with plenty of spice to keep us interested on every level. There is much to be said about life's experiences influencing our taste. Living in a 1930s Spanish style home in Southern California, my eye went right to the arched doorways and other curves in the building, as well as the 'bringing the outdoors inside' feel of the place. The long table with the spectacular lighting above is thrilling!! The white vining flowers are fabulous, and it's clear the garden is as carefully curated as the interiors. So lovely her husband can fill this role. I love to see two creative people living in plenty of space, each supporting the other with their skills and inspiration. I adore the fabrics as well; such a lovely treat for you, Susanna, to be wrapped in such wonderful color. Cheers, ladies! :)

What an inspired interior! This video is way too short. I would have loved long luxurious pans across the rooms in Maryanne’s home to soak in the textures , the carefully curated walls of diverse art, and architecture. Oh well I’ll just have to watch it again and again!

So, she said that she is a self-taught architect and interior designer, which I feel is very humbling to hear from her. She is so authentic about her own experiences traveling alone to a variety of places in the world. That perspective of someone who is obviously privileged from her family wealth, it’s really important that she shows that her own perspective and design techniques are not for everyone else to love. She said she doesn’t really care if other people don’t like it, she sticks to her own rules that as long as she likes it then it doesn’t matter if other people don’t like it. That’s really showing someone who is very strong and self-aware. She explained that it’s important to love your own place with the mix of personal past influences from her own lovely journeys. I’m really impressed with her own attitude towards design and said that if someone else does not like it, then it’s fine with her. She doesn’t brag about her own wealth in a way that most do. What a wonderful lady, I’m really happy to have listened to her own story, without any one else trying to talk over her. It’s about the people who live in their own beautiful places, and not about the host who loves to interrupt the guests that she visits. I really enjoyed this type of video, thanks so much to this channel for adapting and changing the format of the home tours.
