Bears are not made out of concrete
@austinchasteeny2 жыл бұрын
You can kill bears with just about anything, and in fact most encounters of the surprise attack nature where a firearm is involved are with smaller caliber, more common self defense cartridges like 9mm. And most of them survive those attacks. But armed with that knowledge, would I want to be caught out in Alaska with a 9mm if I could have brought a guide/lever gun? Not if I thought I had a high chance of seeing a Kodiak. Likewise, this concrete test does not equivocate what a 12g slug vs WLNGC 45-70 would do on soft targets, nor does it account for range, where both drop off substantially but the +p 45-70 here has the same muzzle energy at 100m as the 12g has at the muzzle. And the 12g? It's lost half it's energy by 100m. Up close the 12g has some real knockdown power, but at any real hunting distance the 45-70 maintains many many feet of soft target penetration. (Which for 1k lbs moose is a plus) Just food for thought; If I were out hunting moose, but thought I'd have a chance to see a big bear, I'd want a cartridge that could do both reliably and accurately at all potential ranges.
@vipe650r4 ай бұрын
I don't feel like that makes sense as a conclusion at all. Bears aren't made out of concrete. Bone and concrete don't perform the same at all. Flesh and fat also play a role in bullet performance. Hard casts are meant to deal with dense bone and continue into vital tissue (like the brain) to deal meaningful damage. It's why you don't just want something purely soft (like a lead slug) when dealing with something like a bear. Not saying 12 gauge isn't a great idea for a bear, but dismissing 45-70 because of a concrete test is silly.
@davidbutler18253 жыл бұрын
I was laughing so hard as you were making your predictions, and then especially as you were dramatically holding the .45-70 cartridge close to the camera and slowly rotating it so it would glint in the sun. I love to see you excited about a cartridge. This was a very fun video!

Be interesting to see the experiment repeated at a hundred yards and see how much difference the loss of velocity makes.
@slimjimmy2293 жыл бұрын
Hardcast bullets generally have a high antimony content. Antimony is the cheapest way for bullet companies to harden the lead. The problem with high antimony alloys is it creates a brittle lead so unlike a pure lead bullet, or one that is hardened by using tin, that is malleable and expands or deforms after impact the antimony bullet will chip and break apart.
@allengrantham66933 жыл бұрын
The results are very similar to the .30-06 vs .300 win mag test. All four shattered the first block but did not touch the second. My guess is that when the first web is cracked that it wedges apart the sides of the block and cracks the other two webs. The three webs really are not independent of each other, because they are connected by the sides. Concrete is very strong in compression, but not in tension stress or shear stress. It would be interesting to turn the blocks 90 dgrees and see if the bullets get through the first block to the second, when there is only two walls they need to penetrate. This is a very interesting test because both projectiles are heavy with a lot of energy, but have drastically different sectional densities. I bet you would see a significant difference in penetration in the paper plate test, or in ballistic gel. The key points to penetration are velocity, sectional density, and bullet construction. Good video. I like your tests and have subscribed, but to make it a truly great video, include as much data as possible such as bullet weight, velocity, and design. PS. Yes I did take differential equations and newtonian physics in college and my job title ends with the word engineer.

I have lots of experience with 7.62 AP rounds with tungsten penetrators. In the above test, they would usually punch through the first three cinder blocks, or about 8- 9 layers. But a hardened penetrator AP round sucks for deer hunting. Just makes a small clean hole through the torso without dumping much energy into the tissue. But a turned tungsten penetrator in a 12 ga sabot would be freakin awesome to demonstrate.
@ffjsb3 жыл бұрын
You ought to mow the grass short around your target area, and maybe put down a tarp to have a better chance of finding the bullets or slugs. 12 ga. slug is probably the more practical round, as more people are likely to have a 12 ga. vs a 4570... And it gives you the option of different rounds.

I've always been a fan of the 12 ga. foster slugs for deer, groundhogs and inanimate objects.. When I was a kid, every nearby farm had their own dump, with two within a half-mile of our house. We killed more than our share of old TV sets with 12 ga. buckshot and slugs (this was back in the late 50's and early 1960's); or as I like to say, way back in that last century. The only problem was those slugs and buckshot hurt like the dickens when fired from a 12 ga. single shot shotgun with a plastic (Rynite) stock. But we was young, dumb and considered ourselves immortal!! Anyway, I love your video's and have watched quite a few. I was very surprised that the 45-70 stopped so short, although I thought your estimate was a little optimistic.

@thewatcher6113 жыл бұрын
Yeah the gas check is needed when you start shooting at velocities of around 1400 fps and above. The idea that most cartridges are going to be operating under such high pressures by then, that the powder combustion event can bypass the plain lead. Which means you have molten lead spraying at your barrel, thus leading occurs. Just for those why may not have known. Also, hard cast lead doesn't mean it's hard like steel. It's just harder than pure lead, and can hit harder before it deforms.

I own a dedicated 12 gauge slug gun, and it’s performance and accuracy doesn’t come close to the 45-70. This will be long winded but I think worth it. I did the following with my 45-70: I tightly packed a blue rubbermaid tub with neatly folded newspapers stacked upright like your paper plate tests. I then saturated the papers with water over a couple of days. It ended up swollen and god awful heavy and ended up 24 inches deep. I then took a Barnes Original .458 400gr and cut off the exposed lead which created a 380gr projectile with about a .35 metplate. I was interested in the cavitation effects of metplate diameter on penetration. This bullet also has a very thick jacket. The result was a bullet that acted like a monolithic/solid. I shot the tub at 20 yards dead centre. Chronographed velocity at 10 feet was 1800 fps (anything more proves too hot for my Marlin using IMR 4895). I recovered that bullet.... not in the newspapers but in the sand berm immediately behind the tub! Complete penetration of over 24 inches all the way through and out the tub without deviation. The bullet was not deformed and but for the rifling marks I could have reused it. For a radius of about 1.5 inches around the path of the bullet's travel the newspaper was pretty mushed up. I am convinced this round hitting a large grizzly/elk/moose in the chest would have exited out their backside. Old black powder loads at 1300-1500 fps with .45 calibre 400 grain and larger flat nose bullets were reported to fully penetrate and exit bison regardless of the angle of the shot. I believe it.

Feeding the algorithm, as classic cool as the .45-70 is, I’ve gotta say that a good 12 gauge will probably serve you better through sheer versatility unless you need the .45-70’s range, and then there are rifled slug barrels to cover that application as well. 🤷🏻♂️

I'd love to see 45-70 solid copper, in the same test.
@josephtucciarone68782 жыл бұрын
Brenneke Magnum Crush 3" 12 Gauge is what you should be comparing. Why not use a weak 45-70 load? I want to see a hot 45-70 vs the Brenneke 3" Magnum Crush.
@keiththomas31413 жыл бұрын
This was a good comparison. But, it all boils down to physics. I knew the slug would go deeper through the cement because it's 1 ounce! The energy is sustained longer.
@danreid6712 Жыл бұрын
On accuracy alone, the 45 should be first choice on BIG Game at 100 yards. The slug is the Guides Choice for charging Bears or Moose. Great Video there Hillbilly !

I've seen other channels do cinder block tests, and it's hard to bust more than one. It's a lot like shooting a sandbag
@jamesgravel77553 жыл бұрын
Nice. That was sweet. I guessed correct on the slug. But the 45/70 got me. I thought a few more than that. But damn it made sand. Impressive either way
@steveorules77273 жыл бұрын
IMO and I'm not an expert but the best gun, home defence, big game, small game is a 12ga. It's versitily makes it the almost best all around gun.
@mongosafariadventure3 жыл бұрын
I had a feeling your prediction for the 45/70 was rather optimistic. Now, this makes me wonder how much better the 12 GA sabot round (BRI type solid lead). I would predict the sabot destroys at least one more wall.

He was using a run of the mill slug and one of the hottest 45-70’s, hes’s already done 45-70 tests vs a brenneke black magic slug and the black magic did more damage.

@@nickleback3695 go to his playlists check out the 4570 catagory and watch 4570 extreme penetrators video where it broke the second block and really i just like cinder block tests its easy and cheap for who tee whoo
@X_SWGoH Жыл бұрын
Genuinely honest review. That's cool you didn't edit out your predictions. I did think that 4570 was gonna do better. I'm curious if you would get the same results if you ran the test a few times. Thanks for the video

6:00 correct ... it is not a jacket ... it is the gas check used on the lead 45-70 bullet to prevent leading the bore of the rifle.

I don't have a 45/70 question, how about a 50-110 lever action rifle. It's 67% more powerful then a 45/70. Check it out on Lever guns 50 on KZbin. It would be a great side trip for the family and us. I thought I knew a lot about lever action rifles, but this guy is way ahead of me. God Bless your family Adam.
@mdd19633 жыл бұрын
These are hot .45-70 loads, suitable for RUger No. 1/Marlin lever action rifles, and, about the same or hotter than the .450 Marlin....; not even close to standard .45-70 loadings, so, your comparisons to the .50-110 are not applicable.
@richardcolligon42773 жыл бұрын
@@mdd1963 yes I understand that, but he also load's very hot load's. A couple of weeks ago he used a 243 swift that left a wound channel like nothing I've ever seen before. Just check him out and he always returns my comments. I would love to see a comparison between the two, that would be awsome. Have a great day!

@@mdd1963 lever gun 50 just posted a video with a 50-110 405 grain bullet and 5000 ftlbs of energy. I haven't watched it yet, check him out he's a good man.

@@richardcolligon4277 I suppose with enough steel in the barrel's chamber area, it would be inevitable that someone would hotrod the .50-110 just like the .45-70...

Maybe put the water jug in the back half of the cinder block for the slug and 45-70? It might catch them then after going through the first two sections walls.
@ActionJackson23603 жыл бұрын
Could've moved the water jug to the second hole and tried to catch it again.

How about put the water jug right behind the third wall (between the first and second cinder blocks)?

In the words of China Joe: "Come on Man!" Hootily-Who- please shoot the 45-70 thru one block, with a water jug as a backstop. And you could do the same with the 12 ga. Slug-o-matic. We might get to see projectile remnants- What say ye? After your shoulder recovers, or better still, use the lead sled.🤗🤓🗣👏🏼

Ditto to this. And turn them blocks sideways, backed up with the gallon jugs

Could be that piece of jacket was from the gas-check from the bottom of the hardcast bullet in the 45/70.
@boostimalaka13 жыл бұрын
This was a typical 2 3/4 1 oz 12 gauge slug competing with the top of the line +P 405 grain Hard Cast 45/70 Gov’t that performed identical. It was wishful thinking that the 45/70 would make it to the 1 gallon water jug.

oughta do a distanced material damage test comparison for all calibers. like a washing machine or something
@speakupriseup45493 жыл бұрын
Seems like the 45/70 made more of a mess of the block than the 12g
@nickleback36953 жыл бұрын
Because he was using a run of the mill slug and a hot 45-70, he’s already done these tests before where the 12 ga with a hardcast did more damage.
