Hey Dave! As always, a very nice video. I would just like to say that for the owners of the Alienware 17 R4, it's better to make undervolting as the main solution for CPU temperature problems. That's because getting to the CPU core is very difficult for inexperienced people, like me, thus becoming very difficult to accomplish a re-pasting. For the record, my 6820HK was getting about 80 degrees under full load, and now, with -0.150V, I get a maximum of 60~70 degrees Celsius.

Undervolting have absolutely no chance to damage your component, of course it won't void warranty. Actually, I argue there is absolutely no risk to overclock your component so long you doesn't change the voltage.
@DBZHGWgamer5 жыл бұрын
@@Verpal Well you'd be wrong on both counts. Undervolting too much will certainly damage your cpu. But generally people don't undervolt that much because it will make your computer bluescreen. Overclocking also potentially damages the cpu.

It isn't the blue screen that *causes* the damage, it's just that your computer happens to bluescreen before you could lower the voltage enough to do signifigant damage, however it is possible to damage the cpu by undervolting, but usually you wont be able to because generaly the cpu architecture will prevent that. Though this isn't always the case, sometimes you will ne able to damage the cpu that way.

Back when I used to look into PC tweaks more, the common method was to put some thermal compound on the chip, and then get it as spread evenly as possible with the end of a credit card or something. No one goes that far anymore I guess? The pressure from the heatsink should press the blob method into form, but probably not to quite the same degree of evenness I assume.

People are worried about air bubbles when spreading, as they're supposedly more likely than just the blob.

If any small bubbles did exist with that method (and the goal of it is to get as close to none as possible), the heatsink pressure that's supposed to turn the blob into a flat surface in the first place would also even those out, no? There is a good reason the manufacturers chose those voltages, do not be surprised if your laptop crashes on odd occasions when messing with them. reducing voltage raises the noise-floor hence bit-errors. @bepis26797 жыл бұрын
They set a voltage that will work across a larger number of CPUs to increase yield. Intel would rather have all of their chips running on a little bit extra voltage if it means more of them will be usable. Some CPUs need all the voltage, others don't. It would be nice if Intel fine tuned each chip, but that is simply not feasible for them to do.

It also means Indians pay more taxes to buy a laptop than US people do to buy the whole machine. LMAO 😂😂🤣🤣🤣 In US $3k will allow you to buy the same things you would have bought in India at ₹60k. My laptop consistently runs hot. I accidentally left a video game running all day without realizing it once, and came back to find the CPU and GPU were sitting at about 90c. The keyboard was uncomfortably hot. My fans must have been working overtime too, because the next week one of them went bad. I've got a replacement fan, and some thermal paste, and I'm getting ready to do the repairs - I'm kind of nervous about it, though! I've done these sorts of repairs on desktops, but those are considerably easier than laptops. Wish me luck! :D

you should mention that even if the system it's stable by undervolting the cpu you drasticly increase the chance of bad calculations by the CPU (Instability). So when you do p95 test you have to pay attention to the logs to see if there are miscalculations from the jobs (it will be a warning message). Hope this will help

Install older versions of XTU. XTU disabled new versions of undervolting on some laptops other than the supported new intel CPU's. Typical horseshit of intel for making us buy new shit instead of using the current one.

@Leowulfs7 жыл бұрын
Marian Simarro González Probably the Inspiron 7567 with a 1050Ti, he put a video out on it about a month ago. You could also always try to pick up a used last gen laptop with a 960m, 965m or even a 970m for cheap (it'll probably be one of those 5-8 pound bricks though). Also your question is a bit vague, a lot of it depends on what games you want to play and what you want to spend. That is a pretty good starting point though. You could also get something like the XPS 15 with a 960m if your expectations on gaming aren't too crazy and you want a smaller, lighter computer.

the new XPS with 1050, if the price isn't a problem. other than that, there is dell Inspiron 7000 series, also good. And the 800$ Acer and Dell ones with gtx 1050, they aren't as well built as the others but they're almost similar in specs and a bit heavy.

Hey Dave, awesome video man! But could you maybe make an updated video, discussing the "pump out" effect of thermal pastes. Leaving the stock thermal paste in your laptop might sometimes even be the better option in the long run, since a lot of high quality pastes with good thermals, might not last so long in a laptop on a bare die. This is a topic nobody is discussing really. :)
@AidedOnslaught2 жыл бұрын
Hydronaut has been the only paste I found that is consistent. The temps are higher out of the gate than other pastes but it lasts longer than 3 days. I bought some TFX and want to give it a shot, but I just read on the back of the container "silicone". Silicone is the reason why most pastes "pump out". It expands and falls off the bare die. Wish I would have done more research on it than just go off of people's short experiences. I think I'll just keep my silicone free Hydronaut for now.

@tisjester7 жыл бұрын
The software boost will stick until / unless something changes it back.. The thermal paste it depends on what kind you get and use.. Your normal quality type thermal paste (Think Noctua NT-H1 or ARCTIC MX-4) should be fine for the life of the laptop.. The ONLY time you would even think of bothering to reapply the thermal paste is if the temperatures start to go back up.. If they are not, then no reason to clean off perfectly good paste after any period of time. It is not the age of the paste that matters - It is the performance.. If temperatures start to go back up after a year then open the Laptop out clean out the fans and after you take off the heatsink you put new paste on. ALWAYS use new paste after taking off the heatsink.. Do not take it off - see that it looks ok and just put the heatsink back on.. Always clean off the old paste and put on new. (So be prepared with new paste to replace old paste) One other thing.. Storing what is left over in the tube you get.. Do not pull the plunger back up as this will introduce air into the tube - Put CAP back on firmly then put the whole tube in say a zip lock back and remove all the air (does not need to be a complete vacuum just not all puffy).. This should keep for a few years.. You will know it is not good because it will be harder and dried out when you try to use it again..
@BigPaco2137 жыл бұрын
okay so im tech savvy so ive already done the retermal pasting... But my question is will lowering the voltage on my CPU lower my FPS on my MSI Gaming Laptop?
@HoveringAboveMyself7 жыл бұрын
If undervolting results in lower temperatures, then that means that it can keep turbo boost for longer/more consistently so performance shouldn't be any worse.
@itsneight12607 жыл бұрын
generally when overclocking you're turning the voltage UP and you would get better performance so it would seem to make sense that undervolting would get less performance, yes.
@pedrothevenard7 жыл бұрын
Its Neight only if you underclock, what he is saying is that there is a margin where you can lower the voltage and keep the performance the same with lower temps which can actually improve slightly the performance without messing with anything else, that happens because the manufacturer provide the standard laptop with too much voltage for the current clock, so you can reduce that voltage without reducing the clock, voltage is only the fuel it don't add or subtract performance, the clock does, so your laptop will run cooler for longer and if you are having heating problems before the performance will actually improve, even though it seems strange, the ideal way to improve performance is increase voltage increase clock but for that you need to increase COOLING, and in a laptop that won't happen, so you just avoid overheating and get a few frames improvement in a few games with no drawbacks if you do it properly.
@peters.93717 жыл бұрын
If you just undervolt and not underclock you'll likely be fine, just don't undervolt it too much.

Yes, it'd be my first time, but let's do it! No guts, no glory. No risk, no gain. (Plus, I have an older laptop I'm willing to experiment on and expend, if it comes down to it - although please don't tell it, since it has been great to me). Is 'expend' the right word? Anyway, that said, what tools will I need to open up my laptop and are they standard for all laptops because I have three and eventually would like to do all three. Don't let that question scare you. I learn quickly and things generally work out well (and you made it clear that I cannot hold you liable). Thanks for the video, and in advance, for info. on tools so that I don't have to Google it. I trust you. You have that trust-worthy kind of face. Sacrifice. The word I was looking for was sacrifice. I am willing to do that to the unnamed laptop which I am typing this on. It's on to me now. Respond quickly, please. Ordering paste now. EDIT: Okay, so I need a little more help please. (Serious questions). With XTU at -0.080, upon test completion, lowest temp. was 54°C. I then adjusted it to -0.105 and test was working okay with 4 minutes remaining to completion, but I had only seen it go 69°C and wondered why at a higher clock, it was cooler, so I decided to ask this question here while the test was still running ... and ... the system crashed while doing so. Are we not allowed to do anything else while test is running? I'm okay with that, but just want to be sure it was that and not that -0.105 is too much. I guess I should try again, but if it passes, I'll always wonder. If I do, and it passes at -0.105, and I set it to that, will it crash again? If it crashes, will the option to adjust it again come up, or is this a one-time thing? If I do have the option to readjust, will it be as easy as original steps, re-adjustable through XTU, or will I have to go through Bios, etc.? If I set it to the -0.080 which gave me the 54 degree reading, will I have to keep that or can I always try again? By the way, you took too long to reply in regard to tools needed to open the back of my laptops, so I indeed had to Google it. Please expect 32 voice mail messages and 77 text messages regarding your inability to reply in a timely manner. (Please send cell number). j/k 😉
