The "best" is hardly possible to judge. Any decent bakery can make good Croissants/puff pastry. Especially if you are European you can have it anywhere you go. They are simply one of the best in generating hype and overpricing their products.

@@free22 mean home cooking is great and all, but the average French home cook is not going to be able to make croissants. In fact saying someone is French as a way to give credibility when it comes to croissants is kind of silly, because most French people don’t even bake at home, much less make complicated viennoiserie like croissants. I’d sooner expect a Korean or Japanese home cook to crank out croissants than a French one given how passionate a lot of home cooks in those countries are about these pastries.

Their pastries are truly amazing! I remember the first time I went there - it was Mother’s Day and they had sold out of practically everything and it was only about noon! But they furiously worked to get more pastries done for all the customers still waiting. The owner came out and apologized for making us wait and we chatted with him about his family and history. I’m so happy for his success!

The croissant was invented in Austria. And herein lies the problem with claiming one country to be the GOAT of anything to do with food, you’re one day gonna find out that they got something - a technique, an ingredient, whatever, from someplace else. Because nothing is created in a vacuum.

I go there everyday. It is so yum 😋. In my opinion the chocolate almond croissant is the best. But be aware! Because there is always a 30 minute line especially in the morning. There is also a very good coffee shop right next to it.

I usually try to be there by 7:30 am or will be in a line that stretches down the block. They used to sell Valrhona hot chocolate before the pandemic.

Their Kouign amann is my favorite and one reason I'd go back to SF. My last time there was on my honeymoon and the morning we left I was going to stop in and get a few as a farewell and they were temporarily closed for an extra hour. Broke my heart.
