I'm 71 and still do the oil changes on both cars. Another reason I do my own oil changes is to do a visual inspection under the car. In one case, I found a rock wedged in my radiator fan preventing it from spinning. I've also found a plastic bag wedged in the front of the radiator. In another case I saw tire damage that was only visible from under the car. My 2003 Corvette calls for 6.4 quarts of oil. I like to be precise about the oil level. So I will take the time to fill the crankcase precisely until the dipstick reads exactly full.

YES! CV boots as well. I also spotted a small rock wedged between my sway bar and frame. I lay down on a mechanic's mat and check the undercarriage and under the engine about once a month. Recently, I saw some leaching around my transmission drain plug. This was about a year after I had the fluid changed. I checked the torque on the plug and it moved about a quarter of a turn before clicking to spec. Now, several months later, it is still nice and dry, so the stealership that changed the transmission fluid did not tighten the plug to spec. 😡

My brother in-law and his wife went on a 2000 mile plus road trip. We went through checking tire air pressures, wiper condition, tread depth and oil level etc. I asked him when he last had the oil changed. He had set the trip meter A when he did it and it was at 8500 km ( about 5200 miles ). I told him he should get his oil changed along the way. He went into a quick lube place along the way back home. When he came back to stay at our place before taking the ferry back to their home, I noticed a puddle of oil in my driveway under his car. I Googled the oil filter location on his car and found that it was in the front of the engine. I reached under the front bumper and grabbed the filter. I spun it 3 full turns by hand. A co -workers Dad went on a trip in his 1 ton GMC truck, pulling his 28 foot trailer. The oil in the truck had about 2500 miles on it when he left so 1800 miles later he and with another 1500 miles to go he decided to get an oil change at a “ quick lube “ place. He was sitting in his truck over the pit reading the newspaper they gave him. The hood had been popped open and the young kid had gone under the truck to pull the oil drain plug. 5 minutes later the kid comes up with a small clear plastic bottle with about 3 ounces of oil in it. He said “ your transmission fluid is in need of a change, I recommend you have it changed as well “. My friends Dad said “ you got that sample from under my truck just now?” to which the kid said yes. My co-workers Dad said, “I’ve owned my own auto repair shop for over 25 years and I know you can’t go under my truck and pull a 3 ounce sample of tranny fluid from under my truck.”. So by all means, do your own oil changes and learn how to check and top up all your other fluid levels. Invest in a torque wrench, some funnels a tire tread depth gauge and a tire pressure gauge. Keep track of how old your fluids, brake pads, battery, and check your headlights, taillights, brake and signal lights etc. learn how to check and replace your engine and cabin air filters and rotate your tires every 10,000 miles or so. Buy a brake pad thickness gauge ( $12-$15 ) and check the brake pad thickness while rotating the tires. Why pay a shop to do those things ( and even though they claim the have done a multipoint inspection during the oil change in my experience has been that they probably don’t check very well ).

Very good list and #12 Is the top reason I do my own oil and filter changes. By doing it yourself you actually know a complete job was done. And by not being in a hurry I let my oil drain for a while before refilling it. I do disagree about the filters. I think you should use a good quality filter to help keep the lubrication system free of debris and contaminants. My vehicles use oil filters that are enclosed so it's impossible to tell if a dealership or oil change outfit actually changed it and what quality of filter was used. You can also prefill the oil filter with new oil. Quick lubes and most if not all dealerships put on oil filters dry. Tests have shown the average oil filter takes 7 seconds to fill up with oil. Prefilling your oil filter drastically reduces wear. Oil analysis tests have proven a drastic difference in wear.

That's another reason I want to do my own oil changes. My 54 New Yorker had an oil filter that you couldn't fill, as the base was the only part that was attached to the engine, and the can went on open end pointing down, so I replaced the assembly with a 51 - 53 style oil filter that has a removable top cap, so it IS fillable.

Correct. The oil geek did a similar demonstration to show why the filter should be prefilled before fitting. He also analyzed the new oil before filling for particle size contaminants. One tip for people to make this even easier....if you're not driving in a dirty environment you can probably safely use an extended mileage oil filter (such as a Wix HP), and then change it every other oil change. I find that a filter change almost adds as much time to the job as the oil change. (If you insist on changing the oil and the oil filter as often as you should (4-5k miles for a synthetic) then don't use an extended mileage filter. They might have more filter media, but they're also typically using media that doesn't screen out the smallest particles. I use the regular Wix filters if I change the filter with every oil change...it does a better job and it saves me a few bucks.)

Great video! A few extra tips: Make sure you get the correct gasket/washer for your vehicle. Some vehicles use flat washers and some use crush washers, if you use the wrong one it will leak. Always use jack stands if you are using a jack to get under the car, never trust a jack! I recommend a good set of composite wheel ramps but they can be tricky to use, make sure you understand how to use them. Get a clean-up mat to go under your drain pan, they're only a couple bucks at Walmart in the automotive area and are excellent if you have drips that make it onto the ground. Before you change the oil drive the car and get the engine up to operating temperature first. Then, park it and let it cool for 10-15 minutes, then drain and replace. Doing this will help get as much of the old oil out as possible and will also stir up any loose deposits so they can be drained as well. Be careful, the car and oil will be pretty warm. If you use the Fumoto valve go to a hardware store such as Lowe's and get a run of clear vinyl tubing that's the correct size for the outlet of the valve, which can vary depending on the model. This way you can pipe the old oil directly into a container eliminate 95% of the mess.

How do you find the way to change oil on your vehicle model. Any guide book to give you instructions?
@TheCapableDriver-f3b2 ай бұрын
Start with the owner's manual that came with your car. Also, some of the manufacturers allow you to download the service manual - you can search online for your model. Many times, a search here on YT will result in a video of an oil change for your specific model, or one very similar to it. There are independent service manuals like Haynes Service Manuals you could use. The service manuals are great if you have the general idea of what to do, but just need specifics. The videos here on YT are much better if you have no experience. Thanks for watching!

I don't even consider third party oil places. I just got off the phone with Toyota because I wanted to see what they charge these days for my '17 Tacoma (6.2 qts synth & OEM filter) and it's $98. I shop OEM filters on Amazon & Mobil 1 oils on Amazon, Costco or Walmart....I think it's right about $50 worth of product for me to do the Tacoma and even less for the '00 and '02. Originally Mobil One was a true ester based synthetic oil, but there was a lawsuit, and the judgement allowed any oil that met the synthetic spec to be labeled synthetic oil. So to remain competitive Mobil One switched their base stock to conventional oil, speced to synthetic. So except for specialty oils, US synthetic oil is not true synthetic. Europe 0:03 0:03 still requires oil labeled synthetic to actually be synthetic base stock. How I chose Castrol oil is it is labeled conventional but reading the spec sheet it is near synthetic specs, lots cheaper, so I can afford to change it at 3k. Oil itself doesn’t really break down, but the little polymer viscosity extenders break down by about half over 1500 miles. 5w 30 oil starts with a 5w oil and it is those polymer viscosity extenders that expand when heated to make the oil act like a 30w oil. Thats why at an extended oil change the oil seems so thin, the viscosity extenders are chewed up and worn out. So pick your oil by its spec sheet and change it often.
@johnkessler98782 ай бұрын
I should clarify that much of Europe is lowing its standard to the US standard. Germany still requires base 4, PAO or base 5 Ester to be labeled synthetic.
