I was taught to play the phrases of the prelude of the First Suite in one bow so it sounds like a flowing river. This is a lot harder than breaking it up. I don't know what level I'm on. I've worked on the Haydn in D, the Elgar. The Dvorak is too hard. Not all of it but the hard parts are. The Kodály Solo Sonata is also beyond me as is the Bach 6th Suite. I'm what you'd call a good amateur. I'm a translator, writer and artist. So I'm not a full-time or professional cellist.

Completed level 6 at the age of 64, having started at 58. Hoping to continue a level per year!

It's in the later levels that you slow down.

I noticed that early on. Got through books 1 and 2 in the first year, and subsequent books took a little over a year each. Book 5 took almost 2 years, but book 6 moved a little more quickly. I know it takes as long as it takes, but hoping I’ll continue to make steady progress.

@@wherewhatpinkiet7291 yes! Partly due to nerves and thinking that the cello, being such a large instrument, had to be held firmly in order to control it. Bow hold too tight, left hand squeezing the strings (comes from 50+ years on guitar), and just overall tension that comes from fear of missing notes so shifts weren’t smooth, string crossings were squeaky, and vibrato shook the entire cello. Takes years to learn how to play relaxed!

Made it to 12 with Kodaly, Bach Suite 6, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky Rococco in my active repertoire. But that was many years ago. Thanks for your many thought provoking videos. You have contributed much to the cello world.

@@user-zj8zr6xi3i depends on your playing quality, you may be able to play the tarantella at the first year of playing, but I can guarantee you that it won't sound as polished and fleshed out (musically, melodically and in-tune) as when you'd be playing it when you're "actually" on the level where you'd be fit to play it.

I began at 27, with a solid background in another string instrument. 12 years later i'm between 8 and 9, still progressing. But progressing is not only just going from playing 1 to playing 12. It's HOW you play it. You can play lvl 3 badly after some years of progressing, and play it better again 5 years later, and even better 5 years later.

Yes. It doesn’t matter what piece you can read or attempt to play. The levels go with the technique and musical skill you learn and apply. Someone who is at level 6 can play better than someone at 7 if they nail down the techniques and musicality

WOW I PLAYED FOR A COUPLE YEARS AND WAS A NATURAL ...I REMEMBER MARATHON S AND LOVE SUZUKI AS WELL .I WAS HUMMING ALONG WITH EACH ONE AND GOT LOST SOMEWHERE IN LEVEL 8 AND GOT THE NOSTALGIA FROM THE weekly schedule for orchestra...... Amazing how much classes will start a musical anthology in your mind for life!😂❤

As a high school cellist I have played a majority of pieces up to level 11. But I would have to say that my favorite piece on this list is tarentella by squire or allegro appassionata as I am very nostalgic for both peices and still play then often as warm up pieces. Great vid!!

Nice! My kid started playing cello at age 11, 2 years later he is at level 5. He also plays classical guitar at level 8 (started at age 9, 4 years). His cello teacher is great focusing on the fundamentals and the quality of the sound.

I was given the Dvorak way before I was ready for it. Trouble is years later, after I've gone through the Bach solos suites up to and including the 5th, and the Haydn Concerto in D, and the Elgar, I still find the Dvorak too hard. I think it's simply beyond me. I'll never master it.

I love to see this. I am an adult learner, almost 4 years and have gotten up to about Level 7. That is with regards to being able to play it at a decent practice tempo. Not at performance tempo or with such intricacies of the bow. So I'd say a strong level 4 with aspirations and goals hahah.

I just started learning Vivaldi cello sonata in e minor, and I’m just finishing the 1st section, struggling with reading tenor clef 😂. Thank you for this video, I enjoy hearing you play!

Level 8 after 1.5 years, and Level 10 after 3 years as an adult. Kodaly would be level 99 then......(btw I like your video on Kodaly. very nice!) levels aren't so important...but it's always good to have some benchmarks - not that we like to compare, but milestones are always helpful! Keep up your good work.

I need to take lessons with you. I have an instructor but I don't feel his passion and I'm not being trained in a technical fashion like I was with my violin. Even twice a month would benefit me TREMENDOUSLY!!!! I'm 56 and have been playing for almost 2 years. My bowing is dreadful. 😢

Worked on the Saint-Saens Allegro Appassionato back in the day. Haydn and Dvorak were pretty far out of reach. Question - are you supposed to keep your right pinky lifted from bow?

It depends on the teacher. Some believe the bow is held by the thumb and the index finger, others lije mine think the pinkie should almost always be in contact with the bow. Both work great !

Allegro Appasionato and tarantella are essentially same level wise. I would put Haydn concerto level 9, Schumann concerto or Rococo level 10

I would add a different level 11. That’s a big jump from Haydn C to Dvorak. I would rate Haydn D above Dvorak. In my opinion it’s the hardest concerto to play well. It has to be effortless and perfect. Personally I’d say I’m level 11.5. I’m comfortable playing Dvorak, Haydn D and Rococco but not Shostakovich or Prokofiev.
