The list of movies you listed except for Into the Mouth of Madness were all box office hits, the title says misunderstood but brilliant, meaning underrated horror movies. Do you know the first Candyman movie made so much money it was the only reason why they made a sequel 3 years later? That doesn't sound underrated to me.

I think Alien 3 belongs to this title too. It has introduced some really great things about xenomorphs - royal facehuggers and the fact that they take features of their hosts. After that every Alien-based novel, video game, film, book used those ideas. Mimic & The Relic are awesome Monster horror films as well. The People Under the Stairs, Lord of Illusions and Trauma (1993) were brilliant too

Yeah that 1993 remake was excellent - I would even go so far to say it's the best version of the story so far. The writing is extremely intelligent and at times subtle - the scene that proves that would be where the heroine, after being rescued from being cloned, passes her friend while trying to pretend to be a pod. Both women look at each other, thinking they are pods, then the friend manages to out the heroine with a simple question. Far scarier than the previous or subsequent films. BTW the nudity seen in Meg Tilly's nude scene was actually done by her sister Jennifer Tilly.

The best Predator sequel so far, I agree. BTW that scene where Pred refuses to kill Leona is because she's pregnant and Predators are actually pro-life so he let her go even though she pulled a gun on him. Perfect logic for a hunter - don't kill pregnant prey so that way you don't end up wiping your prey species out. We could learn something about ethical hunting from those dreadlocked Rasta reptiles...

I was very happily surprised by how good it was, when it was a new release rental, because it didn’t get much of a theater run, and almost no promotion. I was 15 or 16, and read a few magazines to keep up with new movies and TV shows coming out, and Ferrara being the director wasn’t even promoted much. So, I had low expectations with it being another Invasion of the Body Snatchers adaptation. Ferrara put together a very tight and suspenseful thriller, and his unique touch on the Sci Fi Horror, made for some really creepy scenes. When Meg Tilly is pointing towards them, screeching like an alien banshee, it had been built up to so well, the rest of the movie just flies from there.

It's worth any horror fan making a mental note of both the term 'Necronomicon' (the semi-mythical 'Book of Dead Names' - sometimes attributed to Abdul Al-Hazred), and H.P. Lovecraft, who either draws upon or reinvents the associated (Babylonian) mythology. It's a whole sub-genre - a thing of darkness and a joy forever. :)

Not really :) it's from the novel "Dellamorte Dellamore" by Tiziano Sclavi, the same author of Dylan Dog (the most popular Italian comic). This movie was made becouse at that time Dylan was a huge phenomenon, everybody read it! And I'm one of them, still now, every month there is a new issue of 97 pages :)

The Exorcist 3 was one the greatest and scariest phycological movies of all time it was the BEST sequel to follow the original...it was the blue print of slow burn horror movies..had the best jump scare in history with a one shot .... Brad Dorriff deserved an Oscar and an Academy Award for his role as the Gemini Killer which he was the best part of the movie

Of all the underground/absurd movies I've seen I can't believe this flew under my radar but I' just stumbled across one that looks interesting: Resurrection (1999). From the trailer clips I've seen it looks like it has pretty good gore and has a very Se7en vibe to it. And well, c'mon David Cronenberg is in it, that in and of itself deserves a look.

One of the best features of Exorcist III is the sound design. If one plays it through a decent home theater system or a high quality headphones one is kept at the edge of one's seat by a subsonic rumble throughout most of the film. I am from DC and recognized the theater lobby where Kinderman and Father Dyer visited. It was a small repertory theater on M Street called the Biograph. Sadly, it eventually closed and is now a CVS. The concession stand offered various seasonings for their popcorn..

I thought I’d hate the Haunted Hill remake. It was still early in Geoffrey Rush’s career. I remember when I saw he was cast in the Vincent Price role, “The guy from ‘Shine?’ My dad rented it. My expectations were low. When his first scene cut, “Ever seen one that starts at the top? 20 stories worth of top?” I was absolutely hooked and actually felt embarrassed I’d questioned the casting. He created a perfect alternate performance that did justice to the horror master of Vincent Price, while making the character completely his own. Kudos also to Famke Janssen, who took the character Carol Omhart played very well and dialed it up to a bitchy 11. The scenes where she and Rush get to verbally spar are among the best in the film. Even Chris Kattan I enjoyed. Elisha Cook Jr. is one of the legends of character acting, and I enjoyed Kattan’s modern spin of Watson Pritchett being terrified, but also some needed comic relief. He was a master of snark. Even Jeffrey Combs provides some excellent supporting work. There’s so much good in the film thanks to those performances in particular that I can overlook the questionable CGI.
