The claim of ”white skinned blond people” was fabricated by Jacques de Mahieu in the 20th century. Mahieu was a proposer of biological racism, a precursor to nazism. Cieza de León remarked in his chronicles that ”among the indigenous Peruvians, the Chachapoyas were unusually fair-skinned and famously beautiful”, however, there is no other account at the time from other travelers to the region that mentions the particular "whiteness" of the Chachapoyas. Another contemporary Spanish author, Pedro Pizarro, described 𝙖𝙡𝙡 indigenous Peruvians as "white". Danish Anthropologist Inge Schjellerup examined Chachapoya remains in the late 1990’s and found them consistent with other ancient Peruvians.
