We don't know what the heads "looked like" before they were carved. We do know a number of near-perfectly spherical stone "balls" have been discovered in Costa Rica, spheres whose purpose or reason for being created is unknown. I've spent a little time in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala visiting pyramid sites there. The indigenous folks there are not impressed with most of the "Scientist" that come tell them how things were there. After climbing up a few of those pyramids in the heat of the day the thing that really stands out is there is an amazingly refreshing cool breeze up there. It's a perfect place to refresh yourself after working down below in the farms. And around them are perfect places to gather at the end of the work day too. The locals will tell you this is why those are there if you listen to them. From the top of them you'll see other pyramids off in the distance. The local park rangers I spoke with, native Guatemalans, told me they communicated with each other using smoke signals from the tops of the pyramids all around there. And they are not impressed with the the "anthropologist" portraying them as brutal butchers making human sacrifices all the time. That really disgust them.
