You probably didn’t make an unexpected archaeological discovery today, but someone else did! It might have been an archaeologist finding something unexpected in a place where they thought they’d find something else, or it may have been someone clearing out their attic or digging up their garden. Surprising finds can happen anywhere at any time, and this is the video that proves it!

I'm from the UK and was under the impression that if treasure was found on private land (farmland etc) the worth was to be split between the landowner and the finder. If permission had been given to search to start with.

It's a gentleman's agreement between the searcher and land owner on found items. Antiquities and relics go to the government first.

In America, if it's underground you don't own any of it unless you have mineral rights to your land. Without that your property is just the surface

@@Pally604 yep many people don't know that you can own your house yet someone can own the ground under your house had some pretty wealthy people ask when buying property every once in awhile, they would ask if anyone Owns under the house or if they can purchase that also

@@Pally604 Only if it’s in the sale of the property, otherwise you own everything…. A mineral owner has the right to extract and use minerals found beneath the surface of a particular piece of land. Exactly which minerals are included depends on the terms of the specific conveyance (the document within which someone bought or sold the rights). The conveyance might include all the minerals under the land, or be limited to specified minerals. The most commonly extracted minerals in most areas are natural gas, oil, and coal (although a mineral owner might also own and extract gold, silver, or other minerals). Occasionally, a mineral rights transfer also includes surface rights. If so, the mineral owner also has the right to extract minerals on the surface of the land, such as clay or gravel.

If the San Jose went down in 1708, why does the coin say "1715"?

@ 14:45 - “Buried since the 15th century” (which ended in the year 1499). @ 14:52 - Buried in 1540 - so which is it? They were buried in the 15th century or the 16th century? Based on the coins having Henry VIII wives initials, I’m guessing you meant to say originally (14:45), “Buried since the 16th century”.

1he 15th century ended in 1500 I'm afraid that is why it is called the fiftieth century/. like the millennium we celebrated one year early. 2001 was the start just after midnight on new years day. new millennium.. You are right 1540 is the sixteenth century. They messed up the British reporting of finds laws too.
