Love your videos! Yesterday I used my Neopastels on watercolor paper with a little too much tooth, so I ended up with a painting with lots of small white dots. I had no solvents at home, so I took a little olive oil to even out the background. It worked really well, but of course is no good using for art that's suppose to last. Anyway, I would love to see a video of different solvents and mediums you can use with oil pastels to get a painterly effect.
@SyndiaArt6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lisa! My favorite solvent is Gamsol. It's the least toxic amongst the toxic mediums and it doesn't yellow (oils like linseed and walnut will turn your colors and paper yellow...)

I’m a beginner but I wanted to start with a decent set.I wanted to buy the Mungyo set you recommended but unfortunately no stores carry that product in my country. Do you recommend the sakura expressive ones you use? I found them in a set of 25. Or there is a set of 12 water soluble Mungyo ones(probably student grade). Or I can buy a sennelier set... but I can only afford the 6 piece one :(
@SyndiaArt6 жыл бұрын
The expressionist is pretty good. But to save money you can buy the Pentel Arts set... they do the job really well and are very affordable.

@christinacunningham44935 жыл бұрын
@Berika I started with Pentel. They are great for a beginner set but I was unhappy with the splotchy results. It wld depend on what kind of art you are doing to whether this wld effect your work. I realized I was doing the type of stuff that required constant blending, with everything I made. So it rly just depends on what you are looking to do. But maybe you cld get the Mungyo artist set online? Idk what country your in but maybe Amazon? That's where I got mine and I LOVE my Mungyo set❣. Just be sure to get the correct one as there are 2 different sets. Tks to @Syndia I knew what to look for lol. @Syndia has helped me out So very much! She is amazing!

Hi, is it possible to use technique with the solvent to add a light (buy transparent) layer above completed oil pastel work? that is to use only a small amount of solvent and more pigment to create a "solid" layer above existing work (by solid I mean not simply a "wash"). Thanks
@SyndiaArt4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not that I know of... Oil pastels are tricky that way and they stay very opaque. There is no way of ''glazing'' that I know of. I use baby oil for blending but I haven't been able to do transparencies.

Do you use any product after your project is done to preserve the oil pastels to prevent smudging? I like to use layers of oil pastels to later scratch away under colors... I recently read about a “workable” preservation layer to be able to keep first layers in tact until you’re ready to work with it. Have you tried anything like that?
@SyndiaArt5 жыл бұрын
There is no real way that I found to varnish oil pastels. Sennelier makes a spay made for oil pastel that makes it a little more scratch resistant but it's not 100% . I've tested many things on my channel to protect oil pastels but nothing really works. My last resort will be to try resin. Look out for that video in the next few weeks :o)

How would you go about what photos to use as reference for oil pastel studies. I'm not sure what kind of level photos to look up to practice.
@SyndiaArt6 жыл бұрын
1st ► and this may sound obvious, I would make sure it’s a subject matter that you are interested in whether it be : sunsets, oceans, flowers, faces, cactus or cats... drawing something we are naturally drawn to is important. I would also advise to use an image that doesn't have many details. For example, a sunset over the ocean might have lots less elements of details than a cityscape with tons of buildings... A single Calla Lily is a lot simpler in shape and details than a bouquet of wild flowers in a vase. You get the idea. If an image is interesting to you but has a few too many elements you can simplify it by focusing on one element and keeping the rest less detailed and more impressionistic. One other point to look at to make your life easier is to have a high contrast in the reference image. You can assess if an image is highly contrasted by transforming it into a black and white (in photoshop or other). If most of your reference image ends up being greyish then it means you don’t have lots of contrast. But if you have lots of dark blacks and light white, it means it
