@robintst7 жыл бұрын
I guess hindsight is 20-20 for a lot of these. The Undertaker is probably the best example of the man making the character, not the other way around. It's clear now had anyone else portrayed that original incarnation of The Undertaker except Mark Calloway, it wouldn't have lasted more than a month. When you hear people in the business that have known him talk about him as a person, you can just tell it was meant to be.
@darrylbernard88857 жыл бұрын
Two things made it work,Calloway's attention to detail and his rarely ever going out of character. He took the Undertaker character seriously and fortunately so did McMahon. If someone else had played the character they may have turned it into a cartoon character.

Rick Harris, who wrestled in JCP and the WWF as Black Bart, was supposedly the original choice to be the Undertaker before Mark Calloway. He had the size for the role, but was already 42 in 1990, so it’s unlikely he would have made anything like the impact Calloway made.
@darrylbernard88857 жыл бұрын
UK Wolfman that and he turned it down as career suicide. He didn't want to play a character who was that dark and that ominous. No one but Vince thought a character like that could be successful. Heels were basically cartoon characters until the Undertaker came along.
@benblackburn7027 жыл бұрын
There was more to the Million Dollar Man gimmick than just being a heel. There was the evil laugh, the arrogant strut, the promos being an ass to people and bribing them with money. I dont think Tully wouldve been anywhere near the work Ted did in terms of the character.

Also KoKo B Ware was the original Andre the Giant. He nailed the part but he couldn't get his teeth to grow tiny and green enough so the role was given to Andre the Giant. And don't forget the all 17 Ultimate Warriors that were played briefly after Warrior was fired and they had to get Kerry Von Erich, Tom Mcgee, Did Flair, Kevin Sullivan, Doink the clown, Junkyard dog, Earthquake, Rey Mysterio jr, Braden Walker Texas ranger, Playboy Buddy Rose, and Spike Dudley to portray Ultimate Warrior throughout the 90s.

The Undertaker as Gooker thing comes from a shoot that Bruce Pritchard did, the day before Undertaker was due to debut in a match against Bret Hart's team at Survivor Series 1990 Bret's brother Dean died. Bret decided to wrestle but then someone pointed out that having The Undertaker might be insensitive and they thought of using Hector as a masked Luchador to be Brother Love's surprise wrestler. However Bret said he was fine with The Undertaker so the match went ahead as planned. When asked if the switch had happened Caloway would have been in the Egg Pritchard joked "We'd have needed a bigger egg".

So according to Vince, a unfrozen Nazi gimmick is a horrible idea, but a likely heel angry descended to the WW2 imperial Japanese emperor gimmick complete with a Nagasaki and Hiroshima atomic bomb mushroom cloud but with "blood dripped eyes" titan tron video which is a good or ok idea in Vince's mind. I can only assume that it would be given the full on "Oriental Express treatment" complete with a " Master Fuji" inspired gimmick of Suzuki's wife throwing rice in the face's of the opponents, If only was the 80's we could of had Gorilla Monsoon yelling "Pearl Harbor !". I assume that this predates or was around the same time as the Muhammad Hassan, a gimmick that did not start out like most of Vince's racial based gimmicks only to be turned into one.
