12 Questions to Ask Before Knee Surgery

After seeing a post on the Facebook group today, I'd ask about the surgeon's pain management policy. I've noticed that many doctors are unwilling to prescribe after two weeks. Many of us are barely getting to the shower and toilet at that point.

A better question to ask may be “what is my pain management policy”. You are in charge of you. The doctor is a support mechanism that you chose to hire. Nothing more. Ask this question up front before your surgery.

Just had mine done last Friday. After 4 days I was able to drive, After 6 days I am down to only 2 pain killers a day. Should be able to ditch the crutches before day 9 at the pace I am going. Range of motion coming back but had to delay the leg bending machine due to some excessive bleeding. My surgeon did not use any staples or stitches just steri strips. I have been thru 6 knee surgeries before this most were very easy I expected this to be far worse then its been so far.

I was in the same position, I was in a MVA in 2018 and suffered serious spinal , internal and knee injuries over the course of 4 years I was having multiple spinal and internal surgeries and finally in January 2022 had a TKR in my left knee, after already having knee surgery in 2020 and a year of Corticosteroid injections. My biggest problem was I already had trauma to my knee prior to the MVA and my surgeon was super concerned about post op Pain management due to my long history of taking strong pain medications. I had to stay in hospital a week due to uncontrollable pain and excessive swelling. On discharge my surgeon said she was only allowed to prescribe 7 days worth of pain meds, I questioned this after having previous surgeries the surgeons prescribed a months worth of pain meds and upon follow up would refill for another month, so when I put this to my surgeon she said that’s the policy they are having to stick too, so I was really concerned. I was very active around injuries I had from my MVA and did a 4 week pre op knee activity program to improve post op rehab. So to gut a long story short i am severely restricted in physical therapy due to pain and previous limb injuries. I approached my pain management doctor and he said sits vital I reduce the pain meds gradually but as I explained due to my medical history I need higher doses of pain meds to be able to help with post op pain and physical therapy which is currently limited by pain and I’m falling behind with ROM I’m 4 weeks post op and struggling to attain 90 degree flexion and around 2-3 degree extension. So I’m really not sure how I will recover given my pain levels and surgeons and pain management wanting to continue to reduce my pain medication. My physical therapist said I shouldn’t be reducing my pain medication at this early stage of recovery as did my RN nurse so they are going to reach out to my pain management doctor to explain my circumstances and hopefully come up with a plan, I’m only getting 3 hrs of broken sleep and this is a also reducing my ability to heal and recover. Any advice from someone who may have been in a similar situation would be most welcome….

Every surgery for a major joint I’ll pick knee and hip failure rates that would never be tolerated in most any other surgery take i surgery for example you take any noted ice surgeons and told her or him that their failure rate would be between 20 to 40% meaning the surgery would not correct the issue or would blind the patient that would all be unacceptable so why is it acceptable with major joint surgery this type of failure rate and I’ve seen it everywhere from 20% to 40 to 50%

Asking if you need to lose weight now means that you have chosen to ignore your health way before you need knee surgery. At the very least remove all inflammation contributors to your diet. All sugar in all forms, no factory processed foods, and no food toxins. The food cartels are not your friends and will not contribute to a minimal recovery time. I’m 76, my BP base line is 116/70, my glucose base line is 96, I have zero arthritis and no brain fog. I take only supplements and zero meds ever. I’ve been watching these KZbin’s for my knee surgery prep and see the majority of patients that are either fat or in dismal shape. What did they expect?
