A man of my own heart. I am lucky, I live in Central Oregon where there is some cool woods but we also have a plethora of beautiful stones. Huge chunks of green, yellow and red Jasper, columnar Basalt, rare Obsidians, Agates galore to only mention a few. I am lucky.

This is by far the best video I've watched of yours. I've been collecting my own decorative rocks and wood for over twenty years. I love the fact you included not killing local flora or fauna, unfortunately here lately I see a lot of destruction on my local creeks. Quick question for you do y'all need your fishing and small game license to collect or forage for anything?

I recently discovered a peat bog spot not far away which is under preparation to harvest commercially. The wood they dug up is awesome red like mahogany, even if was exposed to the sun for quite a while. Due to the acidic environment (~pH 2) there aren't a lot of parasites in the first place, but boiling is still a good thing. The large pieces I 'water' with loads of peat at pH 2-3 after pressure cleaning for a month. Works fine.

#1 Solution - put all collected HARDWOOD specimens is a large plastic bag (Clear bags?) so any water or wildlife in or on the wood does not get in your vehicle or dwelling. Also placing your cleaned driftwood in a leak proof plastic bag and filling it with water while inside a tub will waterlog the wood so it is ready when you want to use it for your aquarium aquascape.

Be careful with spongy wood because it can decay in your aquarium and just cause a mess. I would boil it (if its a small piece) and if withstands being boiled than it should work. If its too big to be boiled I would pressure wash it and if it breaks apart it wasn't meant to be!

Great info, I am skeptical as to whether all dead wood is safe for aquariums as you say, I live in redwood country and most of the wood I find in rivers is definitely or possibly redwood, and I've been told by longtime fishkeepers, and the internet alike, that it is not safe, since it has natural pesticides, which is part of the reason why it's so expensive. I've read that other types of wood are poisonous to fish too. it would be cool if you had a video showing how you use redwood and other woods that people say are poisonous. Even doing a tank with a bunch of Douglas fir wood in it or some type of pine tree would be really helpful. Species of trees on the east coast is HUGELY varied, whereas on the west coast, we have mostly pine and fir trees, along with oak

So I was at lake Michigan and found 3 nice peices of driftwood, I got home, rinsed them in water and then added them. 3 minuets later I see 1 tick floating on top so I took them out right away. How do I get rid of ticks?

Well eventually the ticks will drown, but boiling will be the fastest way to remove ticks and anything else living on it. If its too big to boil than try pouring boiling water all over it a few times

Can we use teak tree wood for drift wood.??

Hollow, not hallow. Also, traipsing through state parks or private property with a saw to remove wood, even dead wood, is illegal. Thank you.

Looks like you were at the south mountain reservation gathering some of your wood. I hike my doggies there all the time and gather some wood. Usually for making log furniture... but now looking for driftwood for my tank. Thanks for the great info!!! Now I'm on the hunt!!!

Do you need to treat rocks found near a stream or creek. I found some rocks and drift wood in the hills and was wondering if the rocks need to be boiled as well. Thanks!

"You never know when you could use a good piece of driftwood" 😁💯👏 I have pieces of driftwood, interesting stones and pebbles, even tons of seed pods that i keep just for decor in my garden and house, now I've set back up some tanks, I'll be out scouting for more 👀

Most of those tanks I've had for a while and back then petco used to do the dollar per gallon sale so my 20g, 40g and 75 gallon were the price of the gallons. My 125g brand new was $300, I have a used 125g that I bought for $120 and my 210 gallon was around $600
