One thing that unlocked my shot variability was understanding that "wide" doesn't always mean "wide lens", and that each shot intentionally has a specific part in the story, in the way it is captured can tell the story completely different than another.
@Alexzarfatifilms7 ай бұрын
That’s actually really true I didn’t mention that but I have found I like using 50mm for my wide shots and it really gives it a great look. Intention is definitely everything your spot on about that.

@@Alexzarfatifilms Same here. Getting 50mm+ gives such a different feel that's - dare I say it - "cinematic".

Im noticing some people in the comments that are confused and may have misunderstood the meaning of the work 'cinematic' and claiming this video has a misleading title. I feel like the word 'cinematic' has been so over used people dont really understand the intended meaning. It isnt really meant to be an asthetic. Its more of a meaningful way of shooting. Cinema style filming is basically using each shot with purpos. Not to make it look a certain way but inteanded to FEEL a certain way. A way to communicate emotions and mood to the audience without using words. This video title has been very acurate in my opinion because the more shot lists you know the clearer you can communicate to the audience how you intend them to feel. 12 shot lists is like 12 different words.. if you were stuck with 3 shot lists, youre stuck with three words and its hard to make a cenematic video with those limited shot list as you cant make the audience feel the meaning of your scene. Im not sure that makes it any clearer. But my point is.. the shots are not meant to be picked at random to look nice like a movie. Movies use each shot list to tell a story. This video is teaching you more ways to tell a story... making it more cinematic.... its pretty clear.... i think some people here just needs to check your understanding of the word cinematic. Even cinematic sequences are meant to tell a story. But in order to do so you need to understand what your shot list is saying to the audience just like the way we understand the word sad... cant say your sad to see someone and intend to understand you if you really meant to say youre happy to see them.. idk if im over working this but i just wanna be super clear.

Just watch Kurosawa! He's the best at moving the camera and the subject within the frame. I understand that people just want to study modern directors, but modern filmmaking is mostly lazy, and Kurosawa still, 7 decades later, stands at the top! Thank goodness Roger Deakins exists in this era and others, obviously.

Great video, super informative and i feel like i could reflect on alot of those shot in different films ive seen and recall why they showed up at that point in the narrative. One question i do have is about the close ups, why are they typically done at around 80mm as you said? My guess is that zooms can have a more flattering effect on the intimate features on body or face. Thanks for great content!

In my eyes, all shots should have a reason to exist and should most often be long shots. Long shots helps the audience connect the characters with the setting and allows us to feel like a real person watching these characters. I don’t enjoy constant use of rack focus, over the shoulder shots because it takes us out of reality, holding us at gun point to pay attention only to what the characters are discussing. Sometimes it is effective, but a simple LS or FS with a group of characters talking (in one shot) just feels more satisfying to look at.

Hey what lens they use for a medium shot
@Alexzarfatifilms3 ай бұрын
The lens doesn’t necessarily determine whether it’s a medium, closeup etc. it gives a certain look to the image and it depends on what look you’re going for. in theory you could use any lens for a medium shop. It just has to cover from about the bottom of the chest up. Does that make sense?
