Every time my partner and I are out at a pub or a burger place I feel like a savage eating it with my hands while he expertly finishes it without any trouble via knife and fork. I often start out trying to use a knife and fork just so I don't look like a neanderthal compared to him but it's so hard and not one minute in he'll grab my hand, look me pitifully in the eyes and say "go ahead, use your hands, it's okay."

Une évidence d'une banalité infinie pour nous et apparemment c'est très français, ce n'est pas la première fois j'entends ce commentaire de la part d'étrangers (surtout anglo-saxon il faut le dire...). De même notre passion pour la politique, passion que je pensais commune à toutes les grandes démocraties du monde, et finalement pas tant que ça! Ca c'est triste à entendre par contre... Il suffit d'écouter les gilets jaune pour comprendre combien les français cultivent une insatisfaction pathologique. Apparemment nous avons un corpus de règles de politesse et de bienséance qui semble incompréhensible et interminable aux étrangers, et ça, quand on a grandi dans ce système, on ne s'en rend pas compte non plus. Et je pense que cela contribue à l'image du français désagréable et hautain : nous n'avons pas conscience que notre système de valeur est somme toute assez complexe à appréhender pour un étranger qui n'a pas été initié! I love your videos, they're always great and informative about french culture :). But something I noticed is that I'm French but not from France, which means that I'm this weird half french / half other things and I've noticed that while some of the classic stereotypes "apply" to me (like eating burger with knife and fork), there are things that I've never thought were a thing like deadly neck breezes or spicy butter chicken so it's always great fun to see "how french I am".

I've been around the world and French men are by far the most romantically charming. They are smooth in a way I just adore. My French Exchange student (we are both interested in each other, but just taking it slow) he hates how formal I am eating. Especially in public, I hate when my hands are dirty and I get multiple Napkins and he always says “JUST ONE!” Lol. I also eat pizza with a fork and knife in public because of class and making mess. He says I act like a “White girl” because I am Black and he is mixed (Black & White). Definitely a culture shock for him because I am first person he saw do that.😂

Ok I awkwardly recognized myself in all of your points, just didn’t know that it was general for French people. Light meal is not related to the quantity but means actually that you don’t take much time to prepare it (typically just cut some bread, cheese and charcuterie). Eating a burger can be very messy, the patty always tries to get out of the bun! finally it’s really easier to use fork and knife frankly.

about the spicy thing, it's because every good thing as a flavor. For people not living in a food culture, thee are only 4 flavors : salt, sugar, spicy and acid. French are raised to enjoy the natural flavor of things, that's why we don't need to put salt of spices on everything. If a natural meal taste nothing, there car be 2 reasons : it's made with poor quality ingredients or you have no feelings.

My French husband only shares *some* of these traits. But, he's from the south and his parents are from Croatia and Serbia so maybe he's just not French enough? 1) we literally ALWAYS eat at the couch/bed, and I have to force him to eat at the table! 2) mostly true, he does have great table manners (when there is a table haha) but now that we live in America he's taken to eating like Americans for pizza, burgers, etc. So cute. 3) while he does love a good debate, he tends to be under-informed, but in typically French style, he clings to whatever beliefs he has to the bitter end, forsaking all pleasantries and decorum! 4) hahahahaha IF ONLY! I love that your Frenchie is domesticated but mine is a total slob. I have to BEG him to faire le menage, and he grumbles all the way through. Seldom he will pull out the vacuum but otherwise, it's all on me, unfortunately. 5) 150%. He is cold all the time, wears about five zip up hoodies and a huge parka even when it's 60 degrees out, never cares if we live somewhere with no AC, is convinced that I recently fell sick because I was sitting under an open window, the cold is the enemy to be feared at all times. Ugh. 6) No way, mine is a bottomless pit. However, in true southern French tradition (his hometown is a stone's throw from Italy) if I feel like skipping dinner, he'll just say, "it's okay, I'll just make pasta." 7) Yep. Bell peppers are like ghost peppers to them. 8) Mine gets excited by a lot of things! He's always amazed and excited, and he always says, "c'est chaud," or "ahhh c'est la folie!" or "c'est tellement la frappe!!" but there are things where I want him to react and he'll just be like "mais bon [shrug]" 9) Agree. He'll always tell me what my color is for certain occasions, and he's always begging that we replace perfectly good shoes with the newer ones, etc. 10) Got mine to marry me after seven months! but a visa was at stake. 11) "Ma vie, mon etoile, ma reine, ma déesse, mon petit cul," the list goes on and on. 12) Sometimes I gotta ask him to stop making out with me in the grocery store, but what a lovely struggle to have, right?!

That's funny that you're talking about Pico de gallo! I'm french and I watch the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine (do you know it?). In one of the last episode I watched, a guy was complaining that the restaurant where he just bought his food forgot the Pico de galo. I had no idea what it was! Is that a spicy stuff? A chili pepper maybe? I usually really enjoy spicy food. But I visited New York last summer and ordered a spicy dish in a restaurant. Oh boy was it hot! It totally ruined the meal for me. The spiciness took over all the other flavors. That was quite a fancy restaurant with very good reviews though. I think it even had a star in the Guide Michelin, a famous french restaurant guide book. But I don't know why. Such food would never be appreciated in France. 😆 I hate wasting food so I had to finish! But that was terrible! I'll never order spicy food abroad again.

Being Argentinian, it still surprises me how many customs we adopted from the French.... from all the bureaucracy when it comes to the govt and paperwork and getting the little “livret de famille” (they have the exact same thing and it’s red too), to the idea of getting “tortícolis” from cold air, PDA, etc. I grew up in the states but my parents kept up with the traditions after we moved from the homeland. It's not really that we are not interested in the story, it's more the fact that the French language is very monotonous, we're not used to reacting in a very expressive way like anglophones for example ;)

Ma mère est très à cheval sur les bonnes manières à table : il faut tout manger avec les couverts, même les fruits! Et interdiction de saucer son assiette en tenant son morceau de pain avec les doigts, il faut utiliser sa fourchette. Ça provoque toujours l'hilarité de mon grand-père (issu d'un milieu populaire) quand il me voit manger ma poire avec mon couteau et ma fourchette! Personnellement, je ne laisse personne me dicter ce que je devrais faire, et je cherche simplement à maximiser mon confort, c'est-à-dire à ne pas salir mes doigts. C'est pour ça que je préfère manger les fruits juteux (poires, pêches...) ou les hamburgers dégoulinants de sauce avec les couverts, mais que je préfère utiliser mes doigts pour tout ce qui n'est pas salissant (sandwiches, tartines, morceau de pain pour saucer...). Le vrai problème c'est les chips : dégoutants pour les doigts mais impossibles à manger autrement ^^

It’s these cultural habits that have rubbed off on me, and I didn’t notice until I was back in my home country having dinner at a restaurant with friends. At the end we had dessert, an ice cream sandwich, and I ate it with a fork. Hahaha omg! To be honest I liked it that way. Hi, I'm a Frenchman and while I think it can be a romantic thing to do once in a while, I would avoid it if possible, as having crusts all over the bed isn't exactly ideal... Some Frenchman will straight up never do it and look at you like you said you don't like cheese (GL dating a French person if you don't...)

Unfortunately a lot of them don't, especially when it comes to marrying someone, as it can be a sensitive subject and sometimes the day day relationship doesn't feel the same anymore, and while it can be a good thing it can be a not so great thing as well...
