These are beautiful pieces of machinery. It's great to see them still running and in such great condition. Maybe the old workhorses should remain a bit gritty and dirty but they sure clean up nice.

Amazing, so fucking amazing. How far we got in developement to the modern "tractors" I´m driving at work every day and those and amazing how people still keep such relics running, just because they´re, you know, awesome.

Fantastic video. It also neatly shows why building railway lines and controlling gradients allowed the high torque that steam produces to be better used. just listen to those engines as they pull up a hill and then how they accellerate once the effective load is reduced. I am sure it will all come back once petrol and oil has been exhausted!

The one they are aiming for 'The Great Dorset Steam Fair', is a 5 day annual event. Seek out the 2018 , Centenary event, of the First World War. ON Y T, Much Military steam driven stuff, in Army colours, from Tractors, steam trucks to a Armoured Rolls Royce Scout Car. F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C.

Massive3 kudos to the drivers and firemen willing to take on this job on a modern high speed highway. Anyone know what top speed they actually achieved ?
@DMSteam8 жыл бұрын
Most of the steam engines in this video could manage between 10-15 mph. However, top speed isn't what steam engines are about. They were built to pull HEAVY loads, so the gearing is designed with that in mind.
@MistralZephyr8 жыл бұрын
Steam lorries such as the foden at 10:09 and the sentinel were more designed for speed

@spencerwilton58315 жыл бұрын
Nathan Duncan how antiquated do you think we are here in Europe? These haven't been used in many decades! These are examples preserved and restored by enthusiasts. They are far too valuable to be put to serious work, a good good example of a rare or desirable model would cost you hundreds of thousands of pounds!

The steam engine towing the other one was built in 1906 and is a more powerful engine, whereas the steam engine being towed was built in 1917.
@trespire8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. That 1906 starting 9:17 (is that the McLaren 897 Collossus ?) almost sounds like vintage WWII aircraft flying by. Closer sounding to a steam turbine than a popping cylinder action.
@DMSteam8 жыл бұрын
Yes it is 897 "Colossus"... Very different to the 'standard' traction engine layout being a tandem compound. Here is a video from the footplate: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2Gcd516gr6HeJo

The brakes on steam engines are generally wooden blocks that push onto the internal rim of the rear wheels They are surprisingly efficient!
