Ranch Fairy and then Dr. Ed? You're not looking to make new friends or keep old ones are you?........lol. I can't get enough of either one! Thanks for getting them on your show. Don't worry about loosing friends, they weren't real friends anyway. I shoot 68lbs at 29" draw. My sweet spot reloads are 650 gr 28% FOC and 810 gr 30% FOC. Both loads sport GrizlyStick single bevels. Nothing shoots quieter or more stable. I stopped loosing animals and started loosing arrows. The arrows just don't stop. I'm never going back to light and fast.

Thanks for getting this knowledge out there. Mr Ashby has more knowledge than what most guys could gather in 10 lifetimes

Not nearly enough likes for this wealth of knowledge. Being cool outweighs lethality these days. This is a crime against critters everywhere.

Ed Ashby said that he found out that a 650 grain arrow would reliably break bone when shot from his 94 lb longbow, which, pushed that arrow at 184 fps. He said momentum was the factor you are looking for. So, with a modern, efficient bow, pushing an arrow of about 450 grains or so, at about 260 - 270 fps, we get the same momentum figure as Ed Ashby's slow, heavier arrow.

@EdAshby I feel a little dumber now that I've read this response, dumber for the comment that I had written. I do however feel more educated after reading the response from you. Thank you!!!

I just dont understand why people are so concerned with hitting a bone , is like 5 % of what you might hit im willing to bet that there more deer hit in the guts than the bone ...why is it noone talks about well whats the best head for a gut shot ???? Some many other places to make a bad hit and everyone is so focused on the smallest % than you will hit....but cool show guys keep it up..

The very best broadhead for a gut shot is exactly the same broadhead as for when you hit bone. I can't believe that many people spout stuff off like this, without understanding what's in doctor Ashby's study? IT'S COVERED IN THE STUDY! How in the world would you think they hadn't thought of that?

@stephenballard3759 lol. They tested on already dead animals, they did not study gut shots. Sounds like you need to go read the study.

@stephenballard3759 well I go by what I see for the most part and after 35 years of hunting I seen more deer hit back than forward ....when you hit guts a bigger hole is Always better..and shooting dead animals not the same as live ones..sorry but I believe what I see not everything I read ...now I do believe that heavy will Penetrate better for sure but I will not shoot a 700 gran arrow for whitetails it's just not needed ...

Either you haven't read the study, or this is a lie and you are a liar. The beauty of the study is that it was carried out almost entirely on live animals in the beginning. The entire first 1/3 of this broadcast talked about how this study was carried out. How did you miss the part where Dr. Ashby talks about personally killing 154 animals in the first month? Or the parts where veterinarians did necropsies?

Ahhh some head of nails have been hit. Modern equipment has never been as efficient as it is today. So why are these weapons not killing as often as they should. (Passing through)? Because people make them stupid. Thats why. 350-450 anything less than 500 is not using these weapon’s capabilities. It will work well to okay with fixed heads but you put mechanical for bigger cuts you need foc and mass. 500 is hunting weight hell my crossbow cant even shoot less than 500 grains lol it breaks from unspent energy going back into the bow i use 565 with swahackers to absorb the energy on impact. I do not want to lose arrows 100 of yards in the bush or ground i want all the energy spent on the pass through. I don’t care about bones 565 16% foc vital v no fear. For my vertical because its less efficient 600 grains fixed. Your weapon tells you what you need. Go as heavy as you can that your weapon lets you and thats where you want to be. Shoot whatever you want with that. Structural integrity discussion? Why are people not using aluminum? There is not better structural integrity shaft. No ever thought arrows and bolts wouldn’t pass through in the 60s-70s 2216s and 2219s are the best of the best especially for modern. Now recurve or trad an still use wood or whatever. Know your weapon your gear test your gear, i dont mean lightly either know your specs what everything is doing. People do not do this anymore as if it was their livelihood and thats a problem. Its all about form and heavy or speed well its about everything. Form means nothing if the arrow isnt flying heavy or light means nothing if you are not using the bows power. No one is doing the work and tests. You can definitely tell from back yard shooting what works and doesn’t. I did this for years and found that my targets can not stop my setups and they are meant to stop things so i do not see any animal on earth stopping these things when they are not meant to stop them.
