Exactly. It is not like a car. Nobody should do massive modifications to aircraft and vessels. In a car the worst is it breaking down. A plane falls. A ship sinks. It is not worth risking it.

@@thekraken1173 in fairness, I see a lot of people get into bad spots with their cars too. I worked as a damage appraiser for an insurance company and I saw three totals where people tried to DIY new wheels, tires or racing brakes and ended up in totals... @@thekraken1173 Modifications to ships are perfectly safe when done correctly. The aircraft carrier USS Langley was built as a collier. MS Stockholm (yes, the one that sunk the Andrea Doria) was recently converted from an ocean liner to a cruise ship. Several cargo ships have had their length extended to increase carrying capacity. Same with aircraft. Think of the bombers that were converted to commercial aircraft or firefighting planes after World War 2. Or the fact that passenger Boeing 747s are regularly converted to cargo models.

Why all the mindless comments about this not being aviation-related? It's a fascinating look into maritime safety. Apx 33 cargo ships are lost each year, almost none are reported by the media. Each ship will have between 15 and 30+ crew. Many are poorly maintained and employ low-cost crews while sailing under 'flags of convenience' .. that's to say, flags of countries who don't give a damn about the safety standards of those ships, avoiding taxes and avoiding having to pay decent salaries to well-qualified crews is the priority. Surely this is worth bringing to the attention of the media ?

I know i'm gonna sound retard*d, but ever since I was a kid I always wash my face last in the shower. Having to close my eyes while water is on my face freaks me the f*ck out, lol. I do swim as long as I can see the bottom, just had an in-ground pool installed, but I payed extra for lots of extra lights, I don't care if that the contractor thought it was a waste of money, I want to see whats around me at night. Accept that the pool lights have a black light feature that my daughter is very found of at night, no money on the planet can get me to get in when those things are on, sounded like a good Idea during the design. The first pool party we had people over, we watched Jaws on the projector, once the lights went off on the pool I got the hell out, lol. The story of The Indianapolis ship from back in the 40s would be my worst nightmare, I would've just stayed on the ship and call it a day. Those poor guys..

I only know in 13:38, the Norman Atlantic Disaster, one of the trucks that ran by it's own diesel generator in a densely cramped vehicle deck 4 emits a spark that started the fire. The wind from the winter storm carries alot of oxygen and it feeds the fire on the vehicle deck, making it spreading fast and out of control. As a result, 30 people died, 12 of which as a direct result of the fire while the rest have lost into the sea while trying to reach the life boats (which deployed early before ordered by the captain). I am commenting on the last story of the ferry running into the dock. That's what happens when you're too heavy-handed on the helm. You cannot go from ahead to astern under load, the transmission will stay stuck in gear if you just slam the thing into reverse, you have to wait for the engines RPM's to slow down before switching from ahead to astern or vise versa.

The locating beacon you mention is amazing. The first satellite was launched sometimes in the 70's by the Soviet Union and at that time I was a founding member of a civillian volunteer search and rescue group and I said we should test it. After a lot of red tape I set off an ELT during a thunderstorm near high voltage power lines. As the satellite came over the horizon a teletype started spewing out latitude and longitude somewhere in Ottawa and it was about 100 miles off. As the satellite rose above the horizon it narrowed the location to about 10 miles. Considering that was about 50 years ago and the radio signal was just above background noise to the satellite that was impressive to me. With more satellites and improvements to the technology the accuracy is far better. Years later while doing other work for the government i was told my record shows I was the first civilian to transmit a radio signal to a Russian satellite.

Well, we have aircraft carriers that are basically floating airports. We also have hydrofoil Troop Landing Craft that basically "flies" as few inches ABOVE the water. It may be splitting hairs..but technically, a good lawyer could make it stick....lol!✈🛫

On the “disaster” of the queen whatever, or the ferry, the passengers probably had a higher chance of survival because first, if the hull is cracked by a rock, it means shallow waters, second, they were right next to land.

I fished out of Kodiak and Dutch Harbor Alaska and had a friend Danny Vermeersch who offered me a job on the f/v Big Valley. I thought it about for a few days but turned it down as I wanted to get back to Venezuela and visut my girlfriend. The next crab season I took a job on the f/v Lady Alaska and about 24 hrs in we heard that the Big Valley had sunk and all but one crew member had died. The only survivor survived because he was fast as hell getting his life suit on.
