My wife & son & I have been enjoying minimalist car camping for several years now (always knowing that we intended to become backpackers). We just bought backpacks for each other as an anniversary gift and are planning our first backpacking trip. Your videos have been very helpful and inspiring. Thanks a bunch!!

I had to hike by myself once due to friend was having a internship at a hospital, and i thought i was gonna be boring and miserable. But then the 1 week hike turned out to be AWESOME! I met so many people from all over the world and we all talk to each other here and there as we hike, and the best is that i don't have to keep up with anybody or compromise anything for someone else, and oh yea! Finally i can be alone and not hearing women flapping their gums. And the downside of hiking into the deep woods is that there's no mother fuking cellphone reception. I want to watch Netflix sometime by the campfire.

Erik W Yeah Erik, I really like solo trips as well. I also find that I meet a lot more hikers when I'm backpacking by myself. I think it's easier to talk with a solo hiker than a group. It's definitely nice to not have to worry about anyone else's needs on the trail sometimes. To be able to stop whenever you want, hike whenever you want, and camp wherever you want is a really nice luxury. I do advise that only experienced backpackers should strike out on their own though. That way people can stay safe. Also, I'm not too bothered by my girlfriend flapping her gums while we hike :). She's got a pretty voice and she's more interesting than I am too. Thanks for the comment!

One tip about online info is that you need to be aware of who is giving the info. Here in Texas we have the North East Texas Trail (a rail-to-trail path). The online info from the state park folks is great, but overly optimistic as to what you can accomplish where. I was just out there this weekend and they made it seem as if it would be a cakewalk, however in reality there are few places to setup a tent, and unless you're going town to town, there are no sources of water. The trail at most points is immediately surrounded by private property. None of that is on the web site dedicated to the NETT. IF possible find a forum with folks who have already hiked the route you want to hike.

That's very good advice good2go. Thanks for sharing. Make sure you send that state park website a note about your experience so they can address those changes on their website too. Thanks for your support!

Excellent video. I have wanted to make a video like this for some time now, but never would have made it as good as you have--especially the production quality and editing. I am going to put a link to this video on my blog. I get a lot of questions from rookie backpackers, and a video like this could really help out. Thanks and keep up the good work! I have enjoyed the rest of your videos as well!

Cesar Valdez Thanks Cesar! Sharing videos like that is really helpful for getting the word out! I've got a bunch more videos coming too, so I hope you enjoy those ones as well. Let me know.

anyone who knows anything about taking care of maps ALWAYS known not to mark the with PENS. make a photocopy of your origional map if you want to highlight your route. when marking on the origional map, ALWAYS use pencil and avoid ANY kind of pen. you should also make a route card of your journey in advance; with coordinates for your origional map, distance, elevation/altitude, and estimated timings for each "leg". each "leg" should be approx 1 km long (which should take ~12.5 minutes - make your legs shorter if the route has many bends, is complicated, or the route is rapidly elevating the further you go. if need be, you can make your legs as short as 100 m if any of these are the case). plan for good time for stops and meal breaks, but bear in mind: you want to cover as much ground as possible - so dont make many rests more than 20 mins, and your meals should take no more than 1 hour tops (this is plenty of time!)

Hey Dave. Love you videos! Can you do one about avoiding and treating exposure to poison ivy/oak/sumac? I'm highly allergic and still have a terrible time identifying these plants. Also I've heard that there are often plants growing nearby that counteract the urushiol irritant or relieve the itch. But I wonder... is that a myth? Do you or any of your fellow hikers suffer from these skin allergies?
@CleverHiker9 жыл бұрын
Kelly S Yup, great call! That info is in Essential Trail Skills episode 19 coming in a few weeks. So make sure to subscribe. As far as plants that counteract poison ivy, I've never heard of anything like that, but lots and lots of people are allergic. Roughly 70-80%.
@kellys14589 жыл бұрын
Dave Collins Super! I'm so glad to hear you plan to cover the topic of poison plants! I get itchy just thinking about it. My reaction is typically bad enough that I have to get a prescription for prednisone. The natural remedy I've read about is called Jewelweed. But I've no idea if it actually works. Has anyone in KZbin land field-tested jewelweed to prevent or cure a poison ivy rash?

Dave Collins maybe we should do a website collab instead of a video collab. My website is hikeoregon.net. It looks like we are both in the PNW so collaborating could be great for both of us.
