We have potatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, radishes, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, have plants on my table that will go in around the 15th. Tomatoes, all manner of peppers, squash, zucchini, and green beans. Also have grown herbs from seeds. Parsley, Basil, oregano, chamomile, dill, chives, and lavender. Thats it for now.

Cool I'm in zone 8b. What have you put in the ground? So far I have potatoes, garlic that's been there since fall, onions, carrots, greens, and beets. I'm not trying to miss my window. Tomatoes, squash, beans, melons are starting inside, was going to put them out around the 20th, you think that will be okay?

@@sr2340 we went ahead and planted tomatoes, zucchini, peppers of various kinds, and summer squash. No more frosts hopefully here. We already had the cooler weather plants in the ground. Our garlic and onions have been in ground since fall as well. We are eating, spinach, kale, and a little lettuce now.

I suspect that 3 feet of snow we just got does not count as April showers. Peas are more cold tolerant than beans and you can plant them out before the last frost. My red runner beans also are great at attracting pollinators. I ha e not had as much luck as you at growing or keeping potatoes. Of course, we have lots of pesky wildlife and bans on ontrolling the mammalian ones.

I love to dehydrate shredded zucchini. Like you, I use it in all sorts of applications, not just soups, stews and chili, but also breakfast casseroles and in baking. I also dehydrated some sliced and some cubed, but I didn't like the texture as much as the shredded.

Great garden list Kris! We do all our beans (green kentuck wonder and variety of shelling beans) as pole beans. Uses very little space in the garden this way and much easier also for harvesting without having to bend over. Here in Michigan right now the lettuces and some greens can be planted outside. For the other plants my seeds are started indoors and all starting to pop out. Plant something everyone!

Like pumpkin seeds, you can roast and eat other squash family seeds. I love the little acorn squash seeds! Also, plant as many perennials as you can. My yard is small, but I have asparagus, sunchokes, many berries and fruit trees, nuts, grapes, and bunching onions. Learn how to save seeds and buy heirlooms so you never run out of seeds. Some seeds can be collected in the first year, such as lettuce, tomato and beans. Others take a 2 year cycle, such as beets, carrots, kale.

@resarm5007

Same here. Our climate has changed so much over the years. It used to be 4 month long harsh winters, 5B zone. Reliably we used to be able to plant peas and onions around midMarch. Now, we are zoned 6, BUT we have a "milder" longer winter. It has become 6 months of bipolar weather, ranging from negative single digits up to 80 degrees mid winter! we literally have 40-50 degree weather swings here. And our old frost free date was April 15, even if we did plant onions and peas and some other hardier stuff midMarch. NOW our frost free date had been moved to May 15, and even then we have had the odd snowstorm in JUNE! It is not unheard of for everything to be out and blooming including trees and we get a hard frost which damages. It is so unreliable anymore that we have such a shorter growing season. I have been lax in getting plants started this year because of illness. I know I need to start my seeds. And I'm thinking it is April. I may take a chance and plant out onions and some other seeds...that can tolerate the cooler nights because they aren't but a few hours early morning for the most part. We are still having 20's and 30's. So I'm taking a chance. I just hope and pray I can do the garden this year because I have had no garden to a very small patch of a few tomato and pepper plants in the past few years. I once planted 35'x45' area! I'm hoping to utilize that space again. If my body can tolerate it! I think I got really disgusted the last time I tried was 3 years ago and we had a slug bloom. We always have bad slug blooms here when it rains a lot. And I literally could walk outside and everything was COVERED in slugs. You hardly could walk anywhere without stepping on them. all over my garden seedlings literally they consumed all my work in one night. And all over my vining plants growing on the walls, all over the sides of the house. it is disgusting. I wish I had a salt mine...I'd probably walk around tossing salt like a maniac.

@resarm5007

garlic always grows over the winter. it doesn't stay dormant. It takes it 8 months or longer of growth to get done. Just remember when it sends up the scapes (flowering stalks) to remove most or all of them. If you want "seed" garlic, leave a few. If not, then cut them when they come up. At the bottom of the scape stalk. Not the whole garlic top leaves and all. leave the leaves. The scape will take away energy from making a larger bulb. Use the scapes in your cooking. They're considered a delicacy. Harvest the garlic when the tops turn brown. Oh and I always break up some bulbs and replant the garlic right away. I don't wait til fall like they say to. I have perpetual garlic garden. I never get them all out.

Been outside all morning uncovering my beds and dressing them with compost from my pallet compost bin. I think made too much compost though 😅. I've got 4 4×8 beds and a 10×2 bed with planters on the ends. Also about 30 containers. But I kept adding to my compost all last season and through the winter and now I've got about 800lbs of compost. All of the beds and the bin are full of worms varying in size from an inch to 12 inches long. Pretty stoked. It is hard work though.

Can you do a video about the other plants you should have in your garden that aren't food? There's lots of nitrogen fixers, native pollinators, shade plants, etc. that should all go together to create a healthy ecosystem that naturally controls pests because you can't have any one pest get over populated.

The only thing I’d add is to check your growing zone. Being in a southern climate, I plant at different times. It took a few years of failure to realize our growing times are quite different from what most of the country does. Ex. I start peas and plant onions in Nov. and can do 2 rounds of potatoes(fall and spring). It’s almost too hot for lettuce outdoors already, since it bolts faster in hot temps.

Great information. Remember, planting will depend on the area you live in. I have planted my vegetable seeds in starter pots in my house. My portable greenhouses will be set out in May and gradually transferred to them. Starting day 1, have the plants out of the wind for an hour or two. Increasing the time every day. Remember, you will need a week to permanently move the plants outside. The reason is they plants need to get used to the climate.

Many of the varieties in the stores are hybrids. Although they may grow, the resulting vegetable may be vastly different from what you are expecting. Many revert back to one of the more wild varieites that they were derived from. Sometimes, the seed won't even germinate at all.

Beginners need to get in a state of mind to enjoy the very hard work involved in gardening. Letting the problems overwhelm you will discourage you and make you give up. It's an endless learning process and the longer you stick with it the easier gardening will become. A common mistake is thinking it's a natural thing and nature will take care of itself. It takes you to care for a garden, nature allows pest and disease to take over. Good luck beginners. The feeling of giving your hard work to a friend or neighbor that doesn't know what you have put in for success is one of the best joy's of life.

My garden is still under 2 feet of snow, we don’t plant potatoes until mid to late may and that still gives enough time to grow and mature before freeze up
