12 Vintage Self-Care Rituals you NEED in your Life (your grandma will thank you!)
1.GETTING YOUR HAIR DONE
In the 1950s and 1960s, it was prevalent for women to go to the beauty salon at least once a week to get their hair done. Getting your hair set and washed as a form of self-care back then.
2.TAKE A SUNDAY DRIVE
I know taking a Sunday drive sounds stressful with traffic, but back in the day, it was considered an act of Self-care People used to plan a getaway for a day and drive out to the country to visit family or enjoy the changing scenery.
3.DEVELOP A Vintage SKINCARE ROUTINE
In the 1950s, women had an extensive beauty routine, including skincare. Cold cream was a common skincare staple and was used as a cleanser and makeup remover. Besame cosmetics has a good vintage-inspired skincare routine with cold cream.
Besame Skincare Essentials:

Cold Cream:

4.FIND A CREATIVE HOBBY
Before the internet, Netflix and social media, people had to entertain themselves with creative hobbies like knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, painting and other vintage crafts.
5.Cooking for enjoyment
Everyone is so bust these days that most people don't take time to cook and meal prep. The idea of this being an act of self-care may seem foreign by today's standards, but in previous generations, people used to spend more time cooking at home and would rarely eat out. It can be rewarding to spend time cooking a healthy meal and as an act of self-care. It can be a therapy for the senses.
6.Take A Bath
Taking a bath for self-care has been considered a form of relaxation all the way back to the Romans in 300 A.D. The major benefits of taking baths are muscle relaxation with Epsom salts, giving you a sense of calm.
7.Read a vintage magazine
Reading a book or a magazine instead of a tablet can be a great way to relax and practice self-care. People used to sit down before bed in the evening instead of being glued to their phones or televisions. Flipping through a book or a magazine can be calming because of all the sensory elements.
8.Shopping in an actual store
Because of Covid, it can be hard to shop in an actual store, but some cities are opening up and have safety measures in place. Before online shopping was available, people used to go shopping as a form of self-care. It is nice because you don't have to wait to try things on and get instant satisfaction. I also love thrift shopping because you can find a lot of interesting this.
9.Go outside
When I was a kid, I spent most of my time outside, like in the films stand by me, Sandlot and Goonies. I would build tree forts with my brothers, go on bike rides and get into random trouble.
10.Make your bed every morning.
I am guilty of not making my bed and try to make it every morning because when I do, it makes me feel fresh when I hop back into it in the evening.
11.Sit down to eat breakfast.
People are eating sit-down breakfast less these days. But getting 15 minutes less sleep to clear your head with this morning ritual might actually be beneficial.
12.Paint your nails
I find it relaxing to spend a Sunday afternoon painting my nails while watching TV or reading a vintage magazine.

My grandma used to own a hair salon she used to have one of the hair dryers in her room after she retired. She’d let me dry my hair under the chair it was always fun & go through her Avon samples to lol 😂 I miss her! My dad would take us on drives to Dairy Queen to get ice cream or we’d ride bikes to it. I miss my family.

My mom is in her 70's, and she still goes to the salon every Saturday and gets her hair washed and styled for the week, and she still calls it the "beauty shop" 😊. When I was growing up, our family would go out for dinner and a drive most Sundays after church.

It would be cool if you did a video like, “living a day in the 50s” and vlog a day where you do things that people in the 50s would do. (Like even watching a vintage tv show like twilight zone or something)!

I remember my grandma went weekly for a wash and roller set for most of her life and loved her cold cream. When I was cosmetology school, there were so many older ladies who came in for a wash and a roller set in the school salon. Those were always fun to do.

In Dominican Republic is very common to go to the hair salon every week and get our nails painted often. It is almost traditional to get our hair rolled up and dried under a hooded dryer. That has been called Dominican hairstyling in NYC. Honestly, I think is the best way to do our hairs.

Also sewing was a popular pastime and we would collect patterns and sew some of our outfits that were in style and it was less expensive to make it ourselves. We also would collect charms from our travels and add it to our charm bracelet which basically was our bragging rights of all the places we visited.

My favorite activity as a teenager late on Saturday afternoon was to soak in the tub with a face mask on and then wash my hair. Then set my hair and sit under a hood hair dryer and do my nails. All this before going out on a date on Saturday night.

Yep going out to eat was rare and it used to be you’d go have ice cream on sundays after church. I do most of these. The hair dryer with the set is still very popular today in the black community. I have the hooded dryer in my home and it’s a great tool to invest in.
@cUser691
@cUser691 2 жыл бұрын
@Sunshine That huge hooded dryer had to be propped on a desk just right otherwise it would tip over + you had to get the exactly right chair height for it to be comfortable. Alternatively, there was that plastic cap with the hose in back to put over your curlers. It was more compact and it came in a gard plastic case. Ah, the memories

I use Ponds Cold Cream to remove my make up and then wash my face, tone and moisturize, and then put a small amount of vaseline on my palms, rub them together and then lightly press rhem over my face and neck. Works wonders. I also have always made my bed every day. My mother used to say, you're bed should be made unless you're in it.

My first marriage was very 1950’s; my husband went to work, I took care of the step kids, cooked all day, had a lovely dinner ready in the evening, and I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t the best at keeping the house super clean but we were very happy. It was a simpler time where it wasn’t all about money. My parents went out to dinner maybe 3-4x a year. That’s it.

Great topic! Just a note that I found out to my horror a few months ago that most vintage hair dryers (and many other electric appliances of the time) contained ASBESTOS for its heat-resistant properties! And especially as they get older, they may be shedding asbestos fibers into the air as you use them! You can look up more info on this online, but essentially any hair dryer made before they started banning asbestos in them and recalling them in the 1970s may contain the substance. It was so disappointing for me as I really wanted a vintage soft bonnet dryer, but the risk isn't worth it. I'm looking into modern hard and soft bonnet dryers now, though the quality and esthetics aren't the same.

So did I when I was a kid. We went to a different place And I loved it my older sister bought my niece and I some chiffon scarfs to wrap around our heads with Big sunglasses 😎👄. One time we went to the Winchester Mystery House. And we brought a picnic lunch.

One does not need different creams. Will only block your pores. I use E45 cream. E45 lotion mixed with water will do at night. I cleanse with coffee dregs 3 times a week. I'm 61, and my skin is radiat, wrinkle-free and smooth.

I still have one of those old hooded hair-driers in those typically 50ies blue and cream shades. And I paint my nails pillar-box red while having my hair-conditioning session every week, 'cause I keep a bottle-blonde 50ies hairstyle. It's all DIY, and sooo relaxing, sheer bliss.

I try to read a book every night b4 bed instead of messing with my phone. Just 20 minutes to do so makes me feel a lot better- I sleep better too. It can be a magazine, a book on a topic u love (maybe something like interior design), or, for me, a good novel.

Yes! Everyone used to go out to Sunday drives just because...plus for some reason every one used to buy a new or used car every 2 years or so. No one kept the same car...plus women were super feminine then so I remember my mom, aunts and neighbors talking about make up and dresses for hours! Also families and friends would visit each other ALL the time...let's say we were driving by a friend's house, you were practically expected to drop by and visit...and this was in the city(San Franisco). These days you have to set up visits practically months ahead. No dropping in these days, that's for sure!
