I didn’t think I’d like the baritone but I have been totally falling in love with them!

A few weeks ago I strung my Pono baritone deluxe with Living Water GCEA strings for baritone and it sounds fantastic. It was just an experiment for the heck of it, but I’m really impressed. The tension feels a little greater than “normal”, but not much, and so the instrument is a bit louder than expected and has more attack. It’s really nice and a pleasant surprise. I may well keep it like this.

Haven’t tried GCEA tuning on my baritones but have you tried High D tuning as opposed to low D. Makes quite a difference. Living water do both string sets.

@@iansmith3564 Funnily enough I haven’t. I say funnily as I often try new tunings with various instruments. I can see how dGBE would be good to try, as a low fluorocarbon D is not great. Thanks for the tip!

The high D makes quite a difference because of the higher string tension. You can always capo at the 5 fret and get the traditional uke sound.
@wantagehoward3 жыл бұрын
I’m well aware that a capo on the 5th fret raises the pitch to that of a regular ukulele. But in practice, a capo that high on a short scale instrument makes for a very awkward playing position and has a considerable impact on intonation. It’s something I’ve tried, on a number of instruments and several capos, and I’ve concluded it’s really not practical. However, it’s always worth trying these things out. I’ve got 4 baritone ukes, two DGBE, one GCEA and one GDAE (for fiddle tunes) and whole load of other ones in all sorts of permutations. Such a versatile family of instruments and such fun.

1. All solid woods win every time. 2. If a spruce or cedar top, gCEA sounds better. 3. Koa or acacia carries DGBE better. 4. All, of course, just my opinion. Great review, thanks.

Hi Alex, it would be good to see some demos and comments about bari's from less well-known makers - othyer sizes as well. My two bari faves at the moment are an electro 30 Inch All Blackwood and a Carvalho that I've had for years. (Incredible tone, as good as a clasical guitar. Mine is solid wood but I think the latest ones by this company use laminate - but I can't swear to that.) Great demos as usual - good to see SUS still thriving.

You play lefty, I am searching for a lefty baritone uke...your fav is....considering a KLOS with Pepe Romero baritone strings so it converts a tenor into a baritone...thoughts?
@SouthernUkuleleStore2 жыл бұрын
If you want a baritone, buy a baritone and not a Tenor... it never sounds as good as the real thing. Perhaps seek out the Snail s60b left handed model. I honestly think the Klos is going to be a poor choice for baritone tuning. Just my thoughts of course

I'm wanting a baritone. Spending far too much time reading and listening and wishing there was more information. Choice is hard enough and then you through a match in the TNT barrel by adding a lot more choice. C'mon ; no fair!

What is the best reason to expand my ukulele collection with a bariton, bearing in mind that my main sizes are soprano and concert?

Surely just hearing that lower tuning bellowing notes out in such a different way is reason enough?

... maybe just that!?

It has got to be DGBE on a baritone, especially if you are playing in an ukulele group. It gives the group a more balanced sound. For the same reason, I think tenors should be fitted with a low G, concerts can be low or high G and soprano's a hgh G. This is just my opinion, but to me, an ukulele group with everyone on high G tuning the sound is too plinky. I play Pono baritones but also have an Ohana baritone bodied tenor strung with a low G.
