You are absolutely shitting me right? Have you seen Dallas Buyers Club? Chiwetel wasn't shit compared to Matt. Mc. or anyone else in that category. He had barely and lines and just stared into the camera most of the film. He had one decent monologue. Tell me how that performance surpassed Matthew Mc's, please.

I find it peculiar how the most realistic movies dealing with horrific subjects often seem almost surreal. Take "Come and See", "Apocalypse Now", "The Celebration" and this, the surreality is what makes them so much more real than other takes on the subjects they treat.

This story told in a movie starring Keith David during the '80's. One scene featured a white carpenter telling about a runaway brought before a judge who wanted to know why he had run away. "Didn't your master feed & clothe you well." "Yes sir," the reply. "Didn't he treat you when you were sick." "Yes, Sir." "Did he ever beat you or misstreat you?" "No,Sir." "Well, it sounds to me like you had it pretty good." Runaway says," Well judge, that job is still back there if YOU want it"!!

There are two books by Solomon Northup, a former slave. You can download them for free at one website called Open Library. Be sure to tick "Show eBooks only" before clicking search. I am currently reading a true-story book "Behind the Scenes" written by another former slave, Elizabeth Keckley. She spent 30 years as a slave and purchased her freedom by hard earnings through dressmaking. A VERY MOVING STORY, folks. In her book, Keckley writes about the abuses that she suffered in her 30 years as a slave; about her career as a successful dressmaker and the works she did for the Senators' wives and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. If you want to read "Behind the Scenes" by Elizabeth Keckley, you can download this FREE eBooks at Open Library online.

A masterpiece of visual storytelling. The one thing the movie missed that I think would have been a dramatic moment is when Solomon is on the boat bound for Louisiana. While on it, one of the slaves gets smallpox and dies. A few days later, Solomon and some others get smallpox and go stay at a hospital. While there, a bell tolls when someone dies to signal to the undertaker there is a body for him to take away. The movie could have used that as a very dramatic scene where even before he ever sees a plantation Solomon's life is nearly lost. But by some miracle, he recovers. Just imagine the difference in appearance he would have had when he returned home with the remains of some pock marks on his face.

Saw this movie yesterday. It was extraordinarily intense. Very emotional. Few light moments...however, utterly important. It was a very real insight into slavery. Now 18 years old, I remember my mom sitting me down to watch Roots. Equally as important. This is a more brutal description of the hardships of slavery. I disagree with the comments about this attempting to guilt people. Slavery in this sense in America is long over. Its not a matter of guilt so much as a new perspective and insight on the horrors that occurred for many people, many whom were not as fortunate as the character in this film. And to OneFitnessGirl....I care.

Some of the most thought-provoking, cringe-worthy, hard--to-watch-without-crying movies in the past, let's say, 50 years, have been ones that are BASED ON A TRUE STORY, which the screenwriter and director try with all their might, evoke the emotion and depth of the film. Such films, although sad to watch, also are fabulous because they SHOW THE TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT. That is what makes it valid. The heart and soul of the movie are the actors, who portray the REAL people who felt the despair, the aggravation, the pain, had sleepness nights etc. "12 Years a Slave" is such a film that a lot of people were not really prepared for. Director Steve McQueen really wanted to show pain and hope in a new way other "slave movies" were acted out. I say WELL DONE. And I'm glad Bratt Pitt co-produced it.

If I'm black and you're from the middle east, neither of us built a pyramid and honestly, historians don't know who did. The ancient Egyptians who built the pyramids were a different group than the middle Egyptians and very different than the Modern Egyptians who migrated there thousands of years later. They could have been from Tuscany, Italy, Subsaharan Africa, or South India for all we know.

Even if the filmmakers felt that Amistad met their "unflinching" criteria , that movie depicts people taken on a slaveship, the middle passage, and the subsequent property trial in the US. It doesn't ever actually deal with the up close and internal slavery system - the people who lived under it, were born in it, died in it, and the people who benefited from it as a normalized way of life. The Africans on the Amistad were kidnapped, but they were never functionally servants or slaves really.

This film might make a lot of people uncomfortable, but it's an honest account of the culture at the time - This actually happened. And just because the idea rubs you the wrong way doesn't give you the right to ignore history, or pretend it didn't happen. It's not race baiting, it's only race baiting if you can't handle truth. No one is blaming anyone, it's just an educational and powerful story. We don't sugarcoat or ignore every cinematic depictions in time, why should be we do that with slavery?

Alex Haley would applaud this movie. to all the white people who see this movie, no need to apologize because this type of punishment can not make up for 200 years plus what we went through. 12 Years a slave is by far one of the greatest historical movies the world has ever seen and it's also the best movie based on the true story of the people who suffered from the black/american slavery during the 18th and 19th centuries. For me,this movie still surprise me even today with the fact that back then, in America, making the colored people from Africa or cities their slaves.Things like that show us how much we had evolved.

iMiguelAOG I think it's deliberate. It's to show the helplessness of those who were enslaved. It's trying to make us understand how so many people could live in bondage for so long with such little organized resistance. Slavery is soul destroying, so much so that the many of their descendants still bare the mental scars. If Solomon's character was a Nat Turner type, then it would have been a different movie all together......a much shorter movie too because he'd of been dead within the first act.

slimithy12 I dont think its weakness, its a survival strategy. The average slave in whatever time period does not have access to the same weapons that the people who are oppressing them have. When enslaved ppl get access to decent weapons have an opportunity they will rebel like sparticus, nat turner, toussaint overture etc etc, sadly though, not many slave rebellions were ultimately successful. also remember the brutality of slavery traumatized the victims and conditioned many of them into accepting their status. Its a credit to african americans of that time that they managed to become fairly successful in years after slavery was abolished. Its mind bogling what humans will do to each other for money, truly sad.

So God rigged people to make bad choices? "Dont put words in my mouth." Youre either all powerful or not. limits and disunity are satan not god. if you have the ability to make the world better and you sabotage that potential then you are as evil as the enemy you seek to destroy. Cycles of spiritual dissonance are the collateral damage of religious dialectic. You think you know more about God than me?

should be a great film, its a reminder to the world of the horrors of yesteryear, although in my opinion they should really make a film with white irish slaves in it too, because it seems the world has focused on the colour of slavery rather than the whole picture, it would take away some the racist aspect of slavery and make it more of a human rights slavery which i think would benefit all ethinic groups

Gerald O'Reilly: If anyone knows history, that individual would know how King James II started the Irish slave trade into the new world. However, what made the African slave trade worst is because the former Irish slaves that became slave owners were in charge & all that hate showed to them while enslaved was shown even more so when they became the slave owner’s to the Africans. Yes you are 100% correct in saying Africans weren’t the 1st & only ones enslaved. However, because of that, you had 2 separate types of people. 1) Slave masters w/ mental issues now being the ones in charge, & 2) relatives of slave owners who went about not wanting to acknowledge what was going on & tried to be kind when they had to encounter. You want schools & teachers to tell who sold the African slaves & what other races were enslaved to the American people like that will somehow negate treating your fellow human being like property. It's American soil History. We have American History? Americans had absolutely no control over what transpired on the African continent. However, what transpired within the country of America, needs to be told in American History to the American people. It’s directly related to how it shaped our country & its people into what it is today. Leaving out what transpired on the African Continent shows Americans feel we did have control over what transpired here on American soil & decided to do the wrong thing. America took a stand to acknowledge what it did was wrong, that was very responsible & a step in moving forward. The mind-set today is “other people did it, so it was ok”. Or, blacks were slave owners too, so it was ok. Or better yet, the very 1st legal slave owner was a black man. That mentality is another problem in today’s society. Whatever race an individual may be, my personal opinion, anyone w/ the ability to see another individual as less than him or herself because of their race has serious mental issues. So many people on here rant about how the blacks should just get over it because others were slaves as well & all races have been enslaved throughout world history & still there are slaves today. Then you have many Individuals who get upset when one race decides to tell its story. Then it gets worst when individuals compare the cost of a slave to property & how much money they would lose if they damaged that slave. Do you realize your comparing a human being, your fellow human being to property. You don’t think that’s a problem when a human being can nonchalantly compare another human being to the cost of property? It's because of that mentality we as human beings need to remind one another that what happened for hundreds of years should never, ever repeat itself. The human being compared to the house. You may not need this but I’m going to say it anyway, “a $300,000 home is just that, a $300,000 home. Healthy human beings can reproduce numerous times & allow you to earn your investment back many times over”. So if I damage my so called property & that property has 2 or 3 children, so what, I have them & when they get old enough, I will continue to earn & every chance I get they will rep what their parents sewed by not being strong enough to survive my punishment & yours will be even worse because it also cost me $300,000. No matter the race, slavery is cruel & evil. If you want your races story to get out there, it's very easy to start a project, do some researching, then locate a partner willing to assist you in getting the story of your race out. Personally, I think every races story should be told to remind us why America is in the stage it's in. This country was able to become so filthy rich in such a short time because it took almost nothing financially to build it. Now America has tried to stabilize the country w/ equality yet trying to hold so close to as much financial compensation as possible. Yes that same 1 - 3% is still holding the country hostage (& I don’t care what race you may be), it all boils down to pure greed & pure greed is going to take this country under.

Anty Grvity you missed my point completly, you admitted there was white slaves in america but yet disagree that only the black portrayal of slavery is acceptable? i do not agree with slavery the 3 sides of my ancestry could well have been enslaved, i just dont thinks its fair to uphold one groups slavery over another because it perpetuates hate from the enslaved towards their masters and the rest of their race, i usa stopped using white slaves for the reasons you say but it was also a colour thing, an irish slave on the run could hide in white society more easily than a black slave thats another reason white black slavery became popular and native americans were used at the begining but the slave owners quickly realised that native americans knew the landscape far too well so they used irish and afrcan slaves. im pretty sure that if slavery was used in a coloured country to the extent of american history it would have been predominantly white slaves for the exact same purposes, meaning there are evil motherfuckkers on all sides and thoughtout history other ethic background have been persecuted too. so come on need to just let it go unless of course your generally still been persecuted

No disrespect to Bill Cosby, but he came from a relatively privileged background compared to most black folks. He admonishes black drug usage, but either doesn't mention or is unaware of the double standard plaguing arrests and sentencing in the War on Drugs. He criticizes black folks' lack of education, again either not mentioning or unaware of the deterioration of the educational system since his youth, particularly in the black community. And so on and so forth...

What? First, I'm Egpytian. Second, I speak Arabic. Third, I'm black. What are you talking about? Most egyptians were of African descent (it is in Africa) and Arabic descent. Move along.

I think this film looks really good and important. Slavely happened ( and it still does, 26,000000 people are slaves today, mostly woman) and it should not have. It happened with the slave trade triangle . The British gave the Africans and Americans guns , alcohol and chains. The Africans gave the Americans slaves. The Americans gave the British sugar and other raw goods. The blame goes to no one country , though we should united Remeber what happened .

Then pray tell, name this piece of legislation that gives reparations to the almost 40 million African-Americans in this country. There must be some record of it.

For starters, slavery wasn't only 500 years ago; Abraham Lincoln emancipated the slaves in 1862, only 152 years ago. Secondly, the Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in parts of the United States; we can't forget that the brutal bonds of slavery exist even today in many places in the world. Thirdly, even in the United States, slavery didn't mark the end of racism against blacks: the KKK came after the Civil War to instill fear in the African American community, and one can argue that racism against blacks continues in the US even today. Racism and slavery isn't something we can try sweeping under a rug; it is a brutal reality that 12 Years A Slave just begins to reveal.

What's it all about? 1. He was able to use the God given gifts of the Spirit to get him out of slavery. 2. It's when a person forgets, for money, the gifts of the Spirit & presents a false impression of what wealth really is that..."Captivity & Slavery" raises its "serpent head" & guile-full (spiteful) body. All for Story Time,

Well, he hasn't responded back. I must've pegged him into some kind of corner by asking him to name this reparations legislation he claims African-Americans are such mooching recipients of. He can't name it because it doesn't exist. He's definitely in denial about how horrible slavery was, though. You're right on the money there.
