120 / 240 volt inverter generators, how to monitor/meter each leg for usage

120 / 240 volt inverter generators offer some flexibility and restrictions if your not careful. In this video I discuss the voltages and how to meter for them. I go over the parts to use to build your own meter box so that you can monitor the generator usage and output.

I don't think it will work with 240vac to determine total amps or power -unless your loads are purely 120vac. For any 240vac load, this portion's current would exist on both hot legs. So 240v current as measured on both hot legs, sums to twice as much as it really is.

@@mikecr4916 Each of these meters has the magnetic ring that each hot leg passes through and each meter is powered by 1 hot and one neutral. While one meter could be used if it was solely a 240 circuit, that is not the case for me. I am using 120 and 240 at the same time. The well pump is 240 and the remaining circuits I need are 120. Therefore, my usage would be different on each leg.

Great video, so if I have a 4 prong twist short jumper at the generator , which mates to a 50AMP 10 ft cable into my trailer 50AMP service connection , I should be getting 29 AMPs on each leg to that panel box inside because I'm not going to a RV 30AMP 3 prong plug . My adapter plug is a 4 prong twist to a 4 prong straight plug in which goes right into my 10 ft cord to the outside connector. Jim
