Here is a quick test using the new feature Smooth Slo Mo in FCPX with the BMCC6K in Open Gate.

Recently there was an update for FCPX called Smooth Slo Mo.
Since the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K can only shoot 36FPS in Open Gate I thought I would try it on a few clips and see if it could be useful or usable.
So here are a few before and after examples.

That's some extremely usable slow-mo, I'm impressed. Motion blur doesn't look quite right, but I suppose that's to be expected.

That's what I thought too, pretty neat to have if you absolutely need to slow down a clip in post or if you need more than 36FPS in OG for a shot or two :).

If you shot at 54 shutter angle for 36fps, that should be equivalent to 1/240 shutter speed which should fix motion blur right

Definitely usable. Not something I'd use for things involving faces and reactions but for almost all other things definitely usable if you don't mind a drop in sharpness.

Twixtor's return! Not bad. Useful for shots where you just need to slow things down without it being too noticeable, but depending on the scene and project, if I'm shooting 6K open gate, I suspect absolute quality is more important than simulating slow motion. I've found myself shooting on the BMCC 6Kfull frame at 2.4:1 @ 60fps to get true 60p conformed to 24 for 2.5x slow motion and I just frame horizontally as needed within a 4K or 6K timeline. Usually you just can't fake actual frames.

For most purposes that’s an amazing solution. Would love to see some shots where the camera is moving more also to see how it handles rolling shutter etc

Definitely usable, not ideal. Good for shots where you're not focusing too heavily on a slowed subject, the more you look at a slowed subject the more off it looks, but for wides with subtle movement you can barely tell. Might be really useful for quick shots where you need to stretch 1 second of usable footage out to 2 seconds, not long enough to notice but gets you more flexibility in cutting (a big part of why I often shoot 48/50/60fps even when I'm unlikely to use it)

Yes, usable if really needed. I think on a short clip you can get away with it especially on a small screen. Not sure if Open Gate format and that sensor made it harder too.

This is seriously insane… I’ve never seen shots in 24FPS slowed to anything I would actually want to use until this. I hope Davinci can get on something similar soon.

Davinci had it already for a long time. It's called "Optical flow" and there's another, but quite heavy on GPU, which is the "Speed Warp", which I don't use. This one looks very similar to Optical flow, but I must admit, this looks way better IMHO. I'm saying this as a DR user.

@@edvelfilms If this is way better, then Davinci has not had it for a long time... Optical flow has also been in Final Cut for years. Speed warp however, is doing something similar to this new FCP stuff, someone should compare those two...

Wow that's impressive! Definitely going to try this out myself. I wonder if you could improve it further shooting at higher shutter speeds, like 180° but for the intended frame rate in post i.e. shot 1/240 at 24fps and slow to 120fps.

Looks pretty good. There are some visible artifacts on the shot with the waterfall and the last two clips but you can probably get rid of them if you shoot with a different shutter speed.

Looks good & usable in a pinch depending on the shot. On another topic, do you use Color Finale Transcoder to work your BRAW files directly in FCP? Btw, love your content.

Thank you!! And yes, definitely usable in a pinch. I just transcode the files and fix exposure, wb if needed and use noise reduction. I export the braw as ProRes 422. Nothing else :).

Quite neat if you need to slow down in a pinch on the 6K! I suppose you could even also add motion blur in post if you really wanted to

For fast moving subjects it's noticable to the trained eye but most clients couldn't tell the difference. Is this in a 24 fps timeline I'm assuming...? Wonder what it would look like on a 30 fps timeline
