This is my 6 months review of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K.
I have already made a couple of videos about this camera, I have done a first impressions and hands on video, a comparison with the 6K Pro but today I want talk about my experience using it as my main camera over the past 6 months.
As you know I don’t like to rush when I do reviews just so I can give you my honest opinion. What I like what I don’t like about this camera and whether or not I would recommend it.
I will also touch on noise, banding and rolling shutter

I thought about getting one, but just prior to this model being released, I bought the 6K G2, and frankly given the clients I shoot for, nobody would know the difference. Plus, I love the one I have. I bought the 4K first about 2 years ago and was happy with that. Now with the 6K G2 as part of my arsenal, I'm still quite happy!

Great review. I have the 6k pro and the entire Leica R kit. I was very attracted to the full frame especially to be able to have: - no multiplier on the lens, - more light - more Bokeh. But I decided to stick with my Pro. - ND filters (even if they are not the best) are indispensable and convenient for me in many scenarios. - Framerate, for me it is essential can reach 50/60 fps (no crop). - Opengate certainly needs to be cut out: 16/9 is already not very cinematic. - I should purchase the L-EF adapter. - Such an "external" sensor is quite dangerous. Sin. So good. ​

Honestly I've been following you for a very long time and I enjoy every review you make because I know I can trust it. You always take your time testing stuff, you always have pros and cons and all the tips you give are always on point. Big plus: your aesthetic is always breath taking like the walk in the Alps. From URSA 12 mini owner - a bit of a strange release for me as it only seems to subtract features (frame rates, ND) in favor of full frame which, let's be honest, unless you're shooting anamorphic all the time you'll still have to crop most of your footage to fit a 16:9 aspect. UMP has such insane resolution headroom it really doesn't matter for me as I'm able to crop from 8K for any aspect anyway so I decided to hold off on buying BMCC 6K. With that being said, I'm in the market for B cam, as my pocket 4K looks so much worse now when I look at footage from it and Ursa Mini side by side, but there is no compelling Super 35 B cam with a square body on the market from Blackmagic which we all dream about ) If only there was a Ursa Mini-Mini - Blackmagic if you're reading this!!! :D

I understand your points! I think this was more of a 'test' to see how the FF sensor would work in a body we know so hopefully we will see it in future cameras too! Full frame is not just about resolution or aspect ratio, it is also about lenses and depth of field etc. Plus you also have a new L mount! Personally I don't need a square cam but one between the 6k FF and Ursa Mini would be awesome!

Full frame now are 3:2 ratio by photo tradition, as they mostly are for hybrid camera. Nothing stops manufacturer to go 4:3 or 16:9. Oh yes something stop them, it's bot them manufacturing the sensor most of the time :) so they buy the Sony cmos or whatever. Even sony full frame cine camera like fx9 use an hybrid sensor. It's 3:2 and use only the 16:9 part of it. But a full frame 3:2 croped to 16:9 is still 1.5 bigger than a S35 16:9

Great Review! I always liked your videos about the Contax Zeiss lenses. You mentioned using them on the FF Bmpcc, did you have any issues with vignietting or unsharp corners on full frame/open gate?

I bought a 6K FF and Sigma EF-L adapter a couple of weeks ago. I had looked at the 6K FF for quite a while. Your video that compared the 6KPro and the 6K FF finally convinced me to take the plunge. The Sigma EF-L adapter worked very well on my Canon 24-70 f/2.8 but not on my Sigma EF 18-35 f/1.8. I could only dial it down to about 28 mm before it produced mechanical obstructions in the corners. I bought a Sigma L mount 24-70 DG N Art for the 6K FF so I can use the Canon 24-70 on my 6K Pro at the same time. I use multiple cameras on performance videos. I like using a variable ND filter with polarizer outdoors so I don't think I'll miss the lack of internal ND on the 6K FF. I prefer to take my Sony FX30 on hikes. It's much lighter and has great battery life.

I think you need to update the firmware of your Sigma EF 18-35 f/1.8 as it gets much more useful with the Sigma MC-21 adapter on a full frame... same happened with my attempts on a Panasonic S5II. You will need a Sigma USB docking station for the Firmware update

Thank you for this review! I am still on the BMPCC6k gen1 which I have been very happy with. I am looking to add a second BMPCC in the next couple of months so this review was very helpful. Yes, the rolling shutter issue. I wish Black Magic Design would fix that issue. Otherwise, I have loved this cam even against Canon, who's colors tend to lean toward red and magenta.

I recommend the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 in Nikon F. Manual aperture so can get a cheap adapter. Great centre sharpness wide open. Has a magical look. Most importantly, very minimal focus breathing

Very good looking content. I agree it is not perfect but what you do get looks amazing. Normal to daytime lighting it works great. Very low light shoots I have had some trouble in post but I am learning workflows on set and in post to make it work.

Great video, as always! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and experience! I have a slightly unrelated question though. You've mentioned that you use Canon EF 16-35 F4 IS lens with you BMPCC 6K PRO in your previous videos. I recently tried the same combo and my handheld footage is very unstable. There's a lot of micro jitters that I can't get rid of. When I tried the BMPCC 6K PRO with my Canon EF-S 55-250, which is a relatively cheap and basic lens, my footage is quite stable and free of micro jitters even at 250. I don't know if I have faulty image stabilization on my copy of the EF 16-35 or if the IS on that lens is just not good enough. Thank you very much again and good luck with everything!

Thank you!! Yes I do use the 16-35 F4 IS on the Pro and I love it. I don't seem to get the same jitters as you mentioned but again I am used to shoot handheld with that combo and i also stabilise in post a lot. I made a video about shooting handheld so hopefully it helps a little :)

great review and this seems like a great camera! I hope a mk II version can include internal NDs, and I know this is a long shot, but I use the S5II and a big part of that is that it has anamorphic stabilization, which I don't think anyone but lumix has yet... Might not be a deal breaker but it's one of the features that keeps me with the lumix system lol Also I'd like a box-style form factor but that's not too big of a deal. Great shots!

Thank you!! Yes, I do have 2 FD lenses and I used them on the 6K Pro a few times but more so on the BMPCC4K. I think I got a cheap K&F or Fotodiox adapter. Top review! Can I ask a question? I will make a short movie this summer. I love the image of the Alexa Mini, but it's expensive. The only option I think is to shoot on a BMPCC. I have never used the Alexa so I can't really comment on it. I can just that the BM punches well above its weight when it comes to image quality! Having owned multiple canon cameras I would always pick BM for short narrative content.

This camera is very tempting for me and I am sort of conflicted with this or the XH-2s As I am now going back to full time freelancing & weddings I think either would be a great choice and the open gate is very exciting from both - otherwise the 6KPro would be another great option. I guess my main concern with the blackmagic is battery life on long days, as you say rolling shutter isnt great though no worse than what people are use to, it is the same sensor in the S1H after all. I am very torn I keep flipping between the 2 though if this had prores and two cards i'd probably get this.

I haven't used the XH so can't really compare the two. Battery life can easily be solved using a VLock to get a few hours. That being said I never saw blackmagic cameras as being good event or wedding ones. Autofocus and IBIS would be preferable I think.

@@OfTwoLands I use manual lenses anyway so not fussed on af. And I don't want anything bulky with vmounts ( I know you can get mini ones) but I'd prefer just using a grip and getting on minimally. @@OfTwoLands I just got into filming weddings last year (mostly to help my wife's photo business) and went with the 6k pro and lots of determination! I first started with a gimbal but lately I go handheld for 90% of the day with a vmount and love it. That weight helps so much. It just takes lots of practice, I'm by no means a pro ha. Focus pulling is becoming more natural to me. Anyway, for jumping into weddings I could see how something with autofocus could make for an easy day. also built in nd is a blessing for a full wedding day

Is manual focus as comfortable on Sigma L lens as your EF lens? what about the hard stop, is it difficult without it? What about auto-focus of that L lens on static scene? Is it manageable? Etc… please review your L lens experience on BMCC6K.

Yes manual is pretty decent! And I don't use auto focus but push auto is actually quick to lock in and a good starting point :)

I agree with everything you say. There is no perfect camera. You buy a camera that is closest to your needs. I think the camera sensor produces stunning images and I think the menu system is simple and clear.

Thanks so much!! I always recommend the MacBook Pro just to be safe. As long as you have at least M1 Pro or M2 and more than 24Gb of ram you should be fine :). Always get at least 500GB of disk space for faster speeds.

All Lumix S Line lenses have fly by wire Manual focus so not a mechanical one but electronical and till today you can't choose with Blackmagic FF the length of it like in the S Line body's of Panasonic . It is why no S Line lens will work correctly with the new blackmagic. They need to implement this feature ...imho

9:11 I dont know what you are talking about...i googled..it had internal nds.. Does bmpcc 6K have ND filters? This powerful model adds an adjustable HDR touchscreen, built in ND filters, and a larger battery for longer run time. You can even add an optional OLED viewfinder!

I use a 50 mm manual lens and while standing completely still i get micro shakes from the camera.Then i use the gyro stabilization in Resolve, but i feel that it doesn´t do a great job. I your exeprience , did you feel that wokring handled the gyro stabilization worked for you ? I see that you use stabilized lens also , so tell , me did you have a problem with the micro shakes? thanks

I actually don't use gyro. I prefer to use IS lenses or stabilise in post and it works very well in my case :). Micro shakes with IS lenses a not a problem for me.

There is Cage from Tilta actually. Since January. Also there was Mid49 from the begining. And also there is Universal rig from PD Movie, mate. And actually the SmallRig cage from 6k Pro fits normal

I'm using it everyday

The BMMCC was Blackmagics box camera, and while they have released a new micro studio that is only vaguely like the pocket 4k, they did not released an update to the Micro Cinema Camera and deprived the Micro Studio Camera of the features that would have allowed it to fill both roles. So this begs the question, Why? The only logical reason I can think is that they wanted to make the new micro studio camera replacement more relevant. Imagine if they managed to make an L-mount box camera with a global shutter like they originally planed with the original micro cinema camera, gave it SDI and a slew of other features. It could literally be along the lines of an URSA in micro form. Anyhow it's just speculation and conjecture.

"Open Gate" just means the entire sensor. I've shot open gate on the 6k Pro, it just has a different sensor area. But yes, the 3:2 is refreshing! I absolutely love the look from the 6k FF in 3:2 and its flexibility with other sensor capture modes. Heck, for a while I was running a APS-C EF lens and just shooting in 4k on the 6kFF and it looked great.

This camera didnt get hate because it is not capable , it got hate because we want a box design and for years people are BEGGING FOR a komodo style blackmagic camera and no , people could go with the komodo but they seem to like the blackmagic image more, so much so that the community created MULTIPLE modifications to make the pocket lineup boxy . The reason for the hate was not that the camera is shit, the reason was because the camera is great but they didnt listen for years.

I haven't tried stabilizing the footage with gyro, I use a monopod usually if I want footage more stabile than I can manage handheld and just use the gyro set at 0 for rolling shutter when doing handheld and it works great for that. It pays off to practice holding a camera steady and not rely on digital tools all the time, just like with manual focus vs auto. Don't be afraid to let the training wheels go. You'll thank yourself later when you get good at it. Saves a lot of time and is a must for a lot of narrative film work for example.

The whole color science debate is run through the ground and clearly shows it's not just a fixable curve in davinci. skin tones and shots are clearly softer and more film like on BM. Curious what people think.

Haven’t used the FX3 so for me I can only comment on the 6K. I think they actually don’t really compete, on paper at least. One has the emphasis on image, ease of use and codecs. The other has autofocus, ibis and frame rates.

i am just most surprised that you take this camera also with you for private shoots and walks. For me it is just way too heavy to carry it on unless i know i dont have to walk long time with it. I really love the bm colors and cameras but for anything else than scripted work it is just too huge for me.

Except for the super old sensor with very bad rolling shutter, limited dynamic range, bad hight Iso, and limited framerates without having to window heavily on the sensor. A sensor even worse than the previous old Super35 of the Pocket series with the only advantage of not that much of IR pollution. But hey, after all it's BM and you can't point the negatives or you will upset someone right? Of course it has a nice image if you expose well (as you should) but that's true for any camera and the versatility of having Braw as (ONLY) option won't save the outdated technology behind the core of the image. I would say that if that's the best image out of any camera you used probably you may want to try more options..
