The night vision goggles we had in the corp were amazing! I remember one time laying down on the ground looking to the stars on a moonless night. I probably seen millions of stars! back then they cost $10,000. The battery was small, I think it was lithium ion. But it lasted for over 40 hours.

In 1998, while stationed in Hawaii (25th LID) I knew a poor bastard that lost his NVGs during night maneuver training after a mudslide caused him to take a huge tumble. Not only was his leg so seriously injured that he got a medical retirement, He almost lost his M4/203 under the mud and got himself buried. We found him waist deep, luckily and the barrel of his weapon was sticking out about a half inch from the mud. The Army was going to make him pay them 1/2 of the $10k the NVGs were worth, but luckily right after it was determined that the accident wasn’t his fault, a couple combat engineers went out with metal detectors and a mine locator and were able to retrieve his NVGs and they still worked. The whole thing was just chalked up as a learning lesson for everyone about the potential dangers of Mud slides during Night maneuvers.

Another good option is the Stealth Cam Night Vision Monocular Scope sold at Walmart for about $100...buy it, try it, if you don't like it return it within the 13-15 days allowed for refund. Like other gadgets...it has its limitations but for ranges upto 75-100 yards it works great. 4 AA batteries, zoom, night/day mode, light levels, focus. I have tested it on my Vepr 12 shotgun which is one of my go to home defense guns and can confidently say it will serve me well in the middle of the nyte when clearing my home if something should go bump in the nyte. I was able to get at least 1 occassionally 2 shots of #7.5 shot off while testing before it would shut off i would say due to concussion blast but that is enough assurance for me to take a shot should i ever need knowing that it was an intruder on the other end of the scope and not a loved one, friend or neighbor. It has worked just perfectly while camping, working in dark places, searching for game...would come in handy during a disaster.

@martinj96476 жыл бұрын
@Blue Dragon Exactly. I've been vaping since 2008, no exploded batteries. Basically every 18650 I've heard of failing catastrophically has been 100% due to user error(or poor design/cheaping out, like in "hover boards"), either in the moment, or previously and to the point the cell was basically hanging on by a thread and eventually went into thermal runaway. As someone who has had to turn more people away than I can count, I can say the average lack of knowledge in end users is kind of sad. So many people have no clue that the 3A ICR18650 they pulled out of their old laptop battery is absolute shit for the 25A application they're using it in and get offended if you try and tell them different, so I frequently have to tell those people to kick rocks. It definitely doesn't help that these people are usually the ones asking for 18v 600w PWM lipo boxes but have no idea what ohms law is or that series batteries need to be balanced -_- in reality though a properly used device running 18650s is no more dangerous to be near your face than your cellphone. Amazon shows it as "unavailable" right now. However, the IDENTICAL item, with a "Barska" logo on it is available as the "BARSKA NVX BQ12998". The case and buttons are identical, only the ink on the top is different. However, it costs $152.31, and has two one-star reviews.

What can you see with the device with the IR light off? That’s usually the difference between a cheap camera and a photomultiplier tube. A camera is worthless without a IR light while a device, even a gen1 device, with a photomultiplier tube can see in the dark using ambient light.
@upwithguns79196 жыл бұрын
What if you use something like a dbal or separate IR flashlight of some kind that doesn't give off that signature? Can you try that out with it? If that works fine then I could easily see this being a great option!

Perfect for the boat while fishing at night. Only thing to make it better would be to be able to power it from a 12 volt or 5 volt external power source, and run a USB or other digital video cable to a computer for night time navigation with a bigger screen. How long do those batteries last, and what is the field of view?

Syrian Army had IR spotlights on their tanks when they attacked Israel. Israeli tank crews literally saw those spotlights from miles away. Might as well use a flashlight and call it night vision because look you turn it on and you can see in the dark.
@Lonewolf65655 жыл бұрын
They saw the IR spotlights because the Israelis were using a newer generation of night vision that didnt need an IR flood light to work. You literally CANT see red IR emitters from miles away without IR optics... If you have passive IR optics they make active IR emitters extremely obvious. If you look at an IR strobe through a night vision optic they look a fucking flashbang grenade going off every few seconds.

I do not know why everyone still claims that IR is not visible by human eye. because I can see it, not so much, but when IR diode is on, I see it very good.
@Squeaky_Ben6 жыл бұрын
mainly because its near IR. these diodes can be seen by the naked eye, its just that our eyes are not very sensitive to these wavelengths.

For $120? Beats the AN-PVS 5's I had way-back when in the Army...probably be better than AN-PVS 7 we had later before I got out with some really minor caveats. Crazy good for the money, really.

Not even close to pvs7. You can get gen3 tubes for it that blows this toy out of the water with image quality and battery life alone. Not to mention no need for constant IR illumination

cool! it is a bit misleading though when when you aimed your camera at the IR light. most cameras pick it up much brighter than it is to the naked eye. try aiming your camera (any camera!) at your TV's remote control. the camera will see the little IR led flashing when you push a button.
