$120 Semi Hollow Gets New Pickups - Bootstrap HB-90 Clean | Install and Demo

The stock pickups in my Glarry are pretty dark, bland, and are microphonic at even modest volume. So I am going to swap them out for a pair of Bootstrap HB-90 Clean pickups which are Humbucker sized P90 pickups.

Hey Kley ... thanks for the video. I had Antiquities in my Epi Dot. I hated the sound. I tried a pair of China made P90 HB size, and the guitar came to life. Sort of amazing, the Antiquities cost quite a lot, and the cheap P90 HB size were about $25. At some point I intend to install Fralin P92s. ...

I’ve been curious about the Bootstrap HB-90 pickups for a while now. I’d be putting them in an Ibanez Artcore AFS75T (thin fully hollow body). Don’t suppose you have any experience with the Mean version? I tend to play edge of breakup to mild/mid gain and wondered if the Mean 90s would be better suited. Thanks, I really enjoyed and appreciate this!

Got mine in nickel covers, way too ice-picky w/500K pots & .022uf caps, swapped in .047uf and put a 470K resistor across the outer lugs of the 500K volume pots, very do-able now. 500K tone pots are okay IMO Put mine in an HH Thinline, 9 guage is too light, pure nickel round core 10s prolly lightest. Flatwounds would be fantastic I'm sure.

There are other 'in-between' pot values. I can't remember exactly but I think it was a 350k pot I installed with my p90. Your solution works too, only thing I'm not sure of with the resistor&500k is whether increments on the dial are in greater amounts

Yeah that sounds awesome! How are you feeling that guitar? Where did you pick it up?

Thanks! I am really enjoying it. It isn't the most refined or easy to play guitar, but it's a great rock and roll or blues semi hollow. The new pickups have tremendous clarity and I really like the openness along with the warmth of the guitar being semi hollow. It's not a traditional sounding 335 anymore, more of a tele tone.

@Kley De Jong Yeah I love that it has a full tone but a little Tele twang as well. I think sounded ok but when you swapped out those pickups you brought it to life! Awesome job!

Why not spend the extra few bucks for pots and switch and replace all the import parts?
