Are you looking to become a Digital Nomad? Looking to become location independant by working online? Teaching English as a foreign Language is a great way of achieving this goal.
In October 2017 I completed a 120hr TEFL with TEFL.org.uk. I'm now teaching online with Italki and Preply with up to 20 essons a week which allows me to earn money and save for future travels.
This video gives advice on what the TEFL is made up of -
- 30 Hour Grammar Course
- 50 Hour Teaching Methodology
- 20 Hour Video Observation
- 10 Hour Teaching Large Classes
- 10 Hour Telephone Teaching (or Teaching on Skype)
I also briefly touch on other ways of teaching abroad, from teaching in a language school, whether or not you need a Bachelor's Degree and other online platforms such as VIPKID and DadaABC.

I did a cheap online TEFL (less than $50 on Groupon) a few years back. To be honest, it was very basic and didn't really provide much actually actionable skills. The lesson planning/ structure part was vaguely useful, but that's it. I'd really recommend going with a course which is video based (including instructor videos and also example teaching videos) rather than just text, and ideally one which includes assessed teaching practice so you are supported through your first experiences in the classroom. After doing my TEFL, I spent a summer volunteering to teach English in China - this was SO much more useful in terms of developing my skills, but it would have been even better to have more guidance and support from TEFL mentors during this time. I've since done a PGCE (UK official teaching qualification) which included 120 days of assessed teaching practicum, and really can't recommend enough that experience. Having someone guide you through everything, give feedback on your teaching, and develop your reflective skills too is just so valuable.

@@davidostrowski679 honestly grammar seems daunting to me. As an English Graduate I shouldn't say that, but I rather take analysing books and poems to learning grammar terminology. It's very confusing to me, as we were never actually taught grammar. You tend to just know. My writing might be perfect but if someone asks me what Auxiliary verb is, I won't have a clue. Honestly none native speakers know better grammar than native speakers. England schools should start teaching children proper grammar.

Great video David! I've been interested in doing something like this as a second job from Texas. I only have an Associates degree in Business, not a Bachelors, so I'm encouraged to hear you say that's not an issue. I almost signed up for a TEFL course in Jan. but thought I needed the bachelor's. Thinking of perhaps doing one just to have as a backup if I decide to leave work again for another year off down the line. Do you think the TEFL is something which needs to be updated if not used for say a year or two? Or is it just a matter of doing the course as a once off, getting the certificate and then it's ok for future job applications?
