If you want a higher voltage from one of those hoverboard wheels you can easily reconfigure the windings. I'm using one of these for a wind turbine and tore it down to see how the windings are connected. It turns out these motors use a Y-connection, but unlike the typical Y-connection where the poles that belong to one phase are in series, these motors have them in parallel. So effectively, inside that wheel is 3 Y-connected generators hooked up in parallel. Therefore if you take these windings and put them in series, you get triple the voltage for a given speed, but also more losses due to the increased internal resistance. I ended up putting the windings in series, but then using a delta connection instead, giving me a good compromise between output voltage and winding resistance.

That's right. Mine's creating enough power to light up car bulps with sturdy hand turning. Maybe Rob got some broken one's, like the treadmill motor he had with that awfull noise and a lot of resistance. The video was 1137. My 180V dreadmill motor lighted up 60W bulb brightly just by wrapping a cord over the axel and yanking. Bad luck with with motors or what seems to be the case?

@@401ksolar Could be but for the meter wires they would have to be very thin. Simple resistance reading would eliminate that possibility. Bigclivedotcom has a great video on this, "Making my PSU cables literally 20 times better". It's for PSU but the principal is the same. Amps cannot travel on thin path.

@@Teknopottu I use those motors in regen mode for braking on my skateboard. If a few watts were true my range wouldn't increase when braking down a hill (which certainly adds range in practice). 2-300w should be no problem for such a motor. Dont focus on the voltage, a simple voltage booster circuit on ebay for 10pounds transforms the voltage up to what ever needed. Google voltage step up booster.. A gearbox would only be max 6-8 percent more efficient than a good booster from ebay. Not worth the hassle of building a gearbox in my opinion.

Following this project with great interest! It just so happens that I have just acquired a hoverboard. I'm planning to do a wind project with the motors. I'm thinking of two savonius type, mounted on a stand together and shaped something like "leaves", just as a low voltage garden ornament that powers led garden lights. I also managed to salvage all 20 18650 batteries, so that's a big bonus. P.S. On the hoverboards main control board, I de-soldered the 4 biggest capacitors and put them in parallel after the bridge rectifier (cheap 3 phase one). They seem to be working well at smoothing for testing.

I have something similar in mind but maybe a bit bigger setup. Two oil drum savoniuses on top of each other on 90° angle on each other. Have several hoverboard motors, maybe spun with bicycle gears and chain. I have almost everything needed gathered up, only ball bearings durable enough are on the list. Maybe from a car... Going with close to zero budget on mind so getting all needed can take time. What kind of setup do you have or is it still on paper?

The maximum current would be achieved when the output is closer to shorted out. Even without increasing rotational speed, something will overheat but you will see many amps. If the device was rated at 250watts and the motors voltage is 36, it should deliver over 6 amps.

I cant understand why your current flow is so low at that Motor?! I can crank my Motors by hand up to 10A - 12A. In the Wind it produce, with a 1,3m diameter turbine, up to 200 Watts. Seems something is wrong with that Motor.

Or meter cables/meter. One could try to light an ordinary 12V car bulb with the motor. Any light would mean it creates more than mere milliamps. And Rob, this should matter if you are using faulty meters. It could give a new meaning to your earlier creations or tests that seemed to generate only that much power.

I ask a question and don't get any response. Don't take this wrong, but sometimes it seems like the test results are off. Then some of us wonder. Could you do a breakdown of your measurement setup? ie; when you say you are switching to amps can you do a close up of your instruments and connections? the readings in milliamps do not quite make sense to me because to read amps the ammeter must be in series with the load. What gives?

sorry mate I do this so many times I often forget to give those details as they are in other vids but I read volts in parallel and amps in series with a resistive load - on occasion I will use an inductive load but not often and I usually say if I am doing that

@@ThinkingandTinkering if you are doing that it is critically important to state what the resistance of your resistive load is, otherwise the values are almost meaningless. For instance, at those RPMs that motor into a low resistance load would easily have generated a couple of amps.

@@wizrom3046 Mate it can only generate what I put in - at full tilt I could best generate maybe 60W from arm power alone - check out the Stanford tables on this. I would guess I was managing maybe 20 watts so at 50 volts or so the most it could be would be milliamps - I am sorry but it just doesn't make sense to me to say a generator can generate more than is put in - it can only do less than that

Yes I know, I've been an electronics professional for almost 40 years now. 🙂 I did say "a low resistance load", so if your load resistor was 2 ohms it could easily put out 2 amps into 2 ohms, or 8 watts. That's why it's really important to say what resistance your load is, it makes all the other numbers make sense. Anyway I've really been enjoying your channel, your innovation, enthusiasm and fun factor makes your vids very watchable. 👍

@Rob, just to be clear, in my simple mind, higher spinning requires more torque. In a Wind generator, this means the "blades" need higher winds to generate significant electricity. Which I interpret as, there's no free lunch!

No free lunch, but I think there's ways to hack it. Robs low torque coreless coil wind turbine design for instance- I think you could stack 2 of those on top of each other, with the coils on top of one, and the magnets on the bottom of the other, and each set so they counter rotated at the same speed in the same wind, and get double the relative speed between magnets and coils, and thus greater output from them. Or with a hand crank, do it like the wimhof generator wheels, and just put your magnets and coils on the inner faces between them- that would get you double the relative speed between them for roughly the same effort of cranking one. I guess you could do it with a motor too- counter rotate the stator and rotor, though in that case you Do have to worry about the torque.

If you make your blade's out of something that has a larger circumference it will spin a lot faster. I made some out of a cheap builders bucket and got much faster RPMS than from blade's made from gutter pipe.

Basically the blades cut with less friction. Yes they will need a faster wind speed to get things going. But when they do the RPM will be a lot faster.

I may only have a sample size of one for each, but I would like to mention it anyways: from my tests I got twice the power output with lower input from a scooter motor over a hover board motor both motors worked perfectly fine as motors, but as a generator, the scooter clearly wins i can try doing some rewiring on the inside, there's some talk about chaning the paralell wires to serial, and then there's some stuff about delta and star configurations.... But I'm curious if it's just less efficient because it has an odd number of magnets for it's poles, I think 30 magnets, 27 poles

It would be interesting to be able to understand the efficiency of the transformation, how much work, how much electricity. The speed-to-voltage ratio seems not to be enough if i don't know how much torque is required to get to a certain speed. Always interesting, every day. Actually I also really liked the video on energy by gravity where you dropped a weight attached to a generator.

Hello Robert. I've seen this video, and since I have a 350W Hoverboard, I'm thinking of this project of a bike generator but also the one for a windturbine (since I have two motors). But my main questions is: How will I store or use the energy efficiently? What would you advise to be the best/easiest way to store the energy and then use it in a nice and easy way? Obviously incorporating the generators directly into the electrical system of the house would be the best but has many risks and might be hard for a starter, so I was thinking like a 48V Battery with a normal outlet, that I could use to power my 3D Printer or my filament dryer for some limited time. Ideally, I'd have the battery connected to the wind turbine or bike while using it for powering the 3d printer, but I understand this might add some complexity, so I was first thinking of starting simple. Using the bike or wind generator to charge up a battery, which then I'd disconnect, bring it to the office, to power up some appliances, until it's depleted, and i'd take it to charge again. On a second stage, I'd try to make it all connected. I think you see my point. What would you advise for this? I'm curious for your input!

If you make your 3 phase rectifier from 1N5819 schottky diodes it will have much lower voltage drop (ie better efficiency) than the garden variety 1N4007 type diodes. 1N5819 should be easily available on eBay.

I've found an old petrol genny in my shed, and as far as I know, the motor is goosed. But the Stator(?) seems fine, as does the little circuit board , I'm genuinely interested to know it it would have any application for a wind turbine....it was for a 240v 1000w generator, so I assume that output would be at a certain RPM, Any advice to where I go from here? cheers.....

The generator probably went a couple thousand rpm with good torque. If the torque isn’t too high then use gears for more speed

Well... You were right from your little talk about the "speed of the changing magnetic field". Back then building the VAWT. I think you're on to something fascinating. And... it all seems to point to (in my mind), finding that way to get around "torque". Especially if one will use gearing. Or... hurry up and have your epiphany of how to gear up without increasing torque; or something new all together, that disregards gearing, dramatically increases speed, and makes torque as trivial as all the other components, in relation to the importance of "speed". Personally... it all reminds me of that VAWT design again. "The outer rim, and not the shaft". Anyway... carry on. Good stuff.

The motor is either shorted or the phases are wired up wrong. I got 4 of those motors on my longboard and 4x 2.5w is not enough to stop a large man going down a hill lol. In real life the boards stops like a bike with decent brakes..

It's the rate of change of flux that you're discussing. Yes you can double the rpm but you can also double the number of poles. Comparing this motor to your previous one is somewhat problematic because it's no ot just the magnetic chemistry that'll've changed - pole number, turns per phase and flux density of pole (regardless of material) are all going to be different. It's perfectly possible to design and build an alternator for lower rpms - your project of repurposing motors it will probably be about running them close to their original design rpm (/voltage). Curious - what was the load to only see 50mA @50V? I'd have thought you could have got a good couple of hundred W with that setup. Final thought - I'd suggest getting a slick tyre bike for these (very useful) bike demos - much quieter!

I recently pulled two engines of of some snowblowers i found for free. They have two output shafts. so i want to use one of the engines on a high mileage vehicle I might try to belt drive one of these hoverboard motors with the second output shaft. Use it as a small alternator for some accessories.

Hello, Robert what can I do to take my hoverboard wheel to make my DC to AC and make it put out 230 volts of AC I have my set up able to make any DC volts from 0 to 480 volts DC I want to take the DC voltage to 230 volt AC in know that I could use a transformer but I can not find the right transformer and not costing an arm and a leg. what can I do please help thank you for all the info you put out great info.

I have 8 hub motors and a 3 acre pond. I have the water flow design but I haven't been able to figure out how to use these hub motors as my generator. Any suggestions I would like to get at least 5 kw if possible. I have a 100,000 gallon drag tank so I will have plenty of water with plenty of Force. I would love to have your input. Thanks

You are definitely going about this the wrong way. Just seen a guy getting 25 watts slowly turning the motor with a hand crank. With a pully set up you should have no issue getting over 100 watt in moderate winds with this thing. You need to rewire a few parts inside the BLDC, slap on a bike wheel and a belt drive.
